Smile What DVDs are you keeping regardless of if you have or are upgrading to Blu-ray?

I really liked the original thread, so here's to continuing that thread which was becoming a good cross-referenced database comparing editions.

I had pages 1 and 4 of the thread in my cache, and saved them to my computer. Here's the first page's posts.

So this got me thinking, what other Dvd's are out there that are worth keeping even though there's a Bluray counterpart available? (sans Star Wars, which is always argued back to it's Vhs counterparts )

Dune - 2006 steelbook due to it containing the extended cut and a few extras not found on the BD

All b/c it looks like the extras aren’t on the bluray that are on the dvd. Although I’m not sure if that’s the case w/Clerks.

Dumb and Dumber - Have two DVD version next to the blu ray, the theatrical and Australian cut, the Australian also has a great making-of featurette which to my knowledge isn't on any other DVDs.
The Warriors - to have the theatrical cut
Heat - original cut with a couple of extra lines that were cut in the blu ray version

Other than that, nothing. I sell all my old DVDs when I upgrade.

If the bluray came out with a combo pack i have sold or traded them. I actually started buying double pack cases and creating my own combo packs. There are some great double bluray ELITE cases at best buy for about $1 each.

All of my Kurosawa movies
Planet of the Apes 35th Anniversary ed.
Oldboy Tin
LOTR Extended with book-style cases (I plan to put the BD's in these most likely)
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Collector's ed.

Showgirls - I collect practically every version of this film

Wild Things - theatrical cut

And then my steelbooks for The Departed (with art cards), Planet Terror (with BB bonus disc), and Sex and the City.

The Japanese BD has this in HD if you were curious.

Otherwise, if I replace a movie on Blu-ray but the Blu-Ray is missing special features, I make my own "2 disc set". I have done this with Dawn of the Dead, Kingdom of Heaven (had to use a 3-disc case for that one), Man on Fire, Predator (original Blu-Ray), and the first two Spider-Man flicks.
I'll get page 4 up tomorrow, and post my own list too.

I kept Godzilla, since Sony failed to include the teaser on the BD and the dvd itself wasn't worth even a buck in resale. I could always trade it to BB, but I've got plenty of others for trade and every time I do a trade in, half of the titles I trade for drop to the same price without a trade within a couple months, making me feel like I wasted the dvd.

Otherwise, that's about it. I generally get rid of the dvd, as soon as the BD is announced, regardless of whether the BD includes all the extras. Though, if I could stomach standard def, I'd probably still have the extended cut of A Knight's Tale too, which I preferred to the theatrical cut, but not enough to favor over the full BD experience.

I try to get rid of many DVD's that I have Blu Rays of. However, I doubt we'll see re-releases of the Disney Steelboxes.

They seriously need to release XFiles on Blu Ray right now.

I make my own combo packs so pretty much all the movies that don't have a combo pack. I have a 4 disc combo of Terminator 2! My family has four DVD players and one Blu-ray player so being able to watch a DVD is pretty much a requirement in my home. Especially because I hog the Blu-ray since I am the only one that cares about quality.

Some that I'm personally keeping:

Batman Begins with lenticular slipbox

Cast Away with steelbook

The Departed with steelbook

Underworld Uncut Extended Edition, awesome release

Hellboy (3 disc Director's Cut)

X-Men: The Last Stand with Collector's Slipbox

Superman Returns with two different slipcovers and a lenticular card

Spider-man 3 with a lenticular slipcover and slipbox (several bonus discs). Movie's nothing to write home about, but ... this was a strange release that has some great special features, a great trailer, a very good director but somehow a terrible screenplay, proving that Sam Raimi should just shoot and not write. For a mess that it was, Raimi did an admirable job. I mean the creation of sandman scene was awesome.

I probably have more but those are the ones I can remember.

I'll probably remember DVD more for its bonus discs, director's cuts or extended editions, and special features. We can say all we want to about how Blu-ray is awesome, and ... it is ... truly awesome (no sarcasm), but we can't deny that DVD had some great releases. However, I'll stick with Blu-rays to watch the movies.

Funny you should say the matrix.. I own the snap case DVD as well the blu digibook and I saw the steelbook.. but I was like nah I can't do it.. it's the same movie.. now if it was a SE version maybe.. but that movie is the only one I really double dipped on that many times.

I own very little dvd's my first was Air force one back in late '97 I think it was... until last year I only owned like maybe 6 DVD movies lol.

With that being said, the only DVD I have any particular attachment to is my FYE Exclusive Steelbook of Cloverfield. I love that thing, and I certainly wouldn't get rid of it, despite owning the film on Blu-Ray.
I hate giving anything to Best Buy for $5 if I know I paid way more than that for it. That's not "saving" in my opinion. So what I do is give them anything that cost me .50 cents to $4.

I have that steelbook too. What I did was buy some hubs from eBay or amazon and insert those hubs on the other side then I slap on the DVD and make my own combo, just in case someone in my household wants to see it (we only have one blu ray player and a few DVD players). Sometimes the hubs slide but once you get it on right they pretty much stay on.

There must be others, but the one that springs most immediately to mind is the two disc Escape from New York special edition. The Blu-ray is pretty bare bones, so that's a no-brainer.
