It must be a bad bluray, cuz i saw the film in the theater and the picture looked all good and clear. This is a case where the bluray does not represent how it looked in theaters regardless of what they filmed with.

So is the film as washed-out as those screencaps? And does the blood look more brown or red?

Sounds like SONY botched this release. I wonder if the PQ would fare better on an import offering.....

I saw this in cinemas (and loved it), and I can also assure anyone with concerns that it didn't look this way in cinemas, at least not where I saw it. The movie itself was indeed pretty rough and if it were replicated perfectly for the blu-ray release I wouldn't expect anything higher than a 4/5, but it certainly didn't look as bad as it does on blu-ray. Colours were more vibrant, the blood was actually red much of the time and it was much clearer. I'm not going to say sharper because it was indeed a fairly soft looking image, but there was certainly decent definition when I saw it. I would have to agree that Sony has stuffed this release up. From what I read and saw it looks AWFUL.
I have the UK release pre-ordered so I'm hoping that at the very least they fix up the colours. |

Whatever it is, the look seems way too specific for it to be a mess-up in encoding. At least that was my impression when screening the disc last night. Interestingly, one of the special features mentions the colour grading and desaturation for deliberate effect. That leaves the slightly waxy pastel effect, but in motion that appeared in line with the digital video look from the cameras used.
But hey, I'm just guessing here. Maybe there are even different timings in different places. Maybe the waxy look turns out to be DNR. Having watched it in motion I'd reserve cries of a botched release until the jury's out. As toddly said, Sony isn't in the habit of botching provided materials in this fashion. The Aussie release is in mid-August, the UK in September. Those should help clear things up. On a different note: the original score that's included is marvelous. It emphasizes dread and doom more than the Trapanese/Shinoda score. Where that one favours faster, pumping rhythms to accentuate the action and shifts the mood up to a piano in places, the original score favours slower doomy bass hits, electronic noise, and shifts to guitars. When melody is used, it is eerily beautiful and used to great effect. Now I didn't find the new score bad at all except for the song at the end, but this was a much more organic fit and a better soundtrack for the subject matter. |

Well if the uk blu ray looks anything like the uk trailer, I'll be very pleased with the look of the film. Just pause at the end and compare the shot of the knife vs gun to the screencap used in this review. Notice how much brighter and clearer it seems?

I saw this last night and wow; easily some of the best fights scenes EVER. Any action junkie should see this at least once in their lifetime. It's violent, gruesome and viscous - I absolutely loved the fight scenes.
As for the story, it was on par with something like District B13. Decent, but not the focus of the movie. However, I enjoyed The Raid far more. It's too bad that the blu-ray isn't up to snub. |

Quote from the BD review:
" Note that listeners may choose to view the movie with either the film's original music or music by Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda." Which score sounds the best? Anyone heard Mike's version? That is a really nice special feature, especially if they both sound good and they sound different from each other. |

heard the u.s. release score and it wasn't to bad. thought Mike Shinoda &
Joseph Trapanese did a nice job. Also, have been hearing that the original score seemed to be more engaging so we are anxious to see the film with the original score finally. J & Jen ![]() |
