I watched the Eagle released version on DVD last night. Good movie, horrendous transfer!!

How would a director even allow such a transfer?? Ironically Eagle has a message before the movie encouraging people to not support piracy but instead wait for the original DVD. If this is how an original dvd looks then i would support piracy to just put eagle out of business!!

Just watched the Viacom release of this on DVD.

Totally and completely blown away. I thought Rakht Charitra was an awesome movie with an equally compelling sequel. This one catupults that to the back of my movie collection. Superb. Totally superb. Great screenplay, cinematography and acting. Kashyap establishes himself as a legend with this. Bollywoods very own Tarantino!

Really looking forward to the boxset on blu-ray!

I watched the DVD. The DVD was Viacom 18, but the transfer was no different from Eagle.

Seems Eagle was the solo maker of one DVD for which Viacom 18 simply put there name on it for a few international markets. If I was Viacom 18 I would left Eagle's name on the DVD and the on DVD box given how horrid the DVD is in terms of PQ a sad decision on Viacom 18 to go the Eagle route!

Really?
Then, we could have a faint of hope of "Gangs of Wasseypur" blu-ray set.
Moreover Viacom 18 product doesn't have watermark! It's so much better!

Ok... to be honest I wasn't that offended by the picture quality. Watched it on a 50" through a HTPC and didn't overtly feel annoyed at the presentation at any point. It was dvd. I wasn't expecting a super spectacular presentation. If i wanted that i'd wait for the blu-ray.

Personally i didn't mind the presentation. I found the movie gritty and involving. I couldn't care less after a couple of mins of viewing if the sharpness was less than 90% satisfactory. Better to enjoy the content rather than the presentation alone. I now eagerly await the sequel. It's one of those rare films that had me thinking about it the following day. I could quite gladly sit and watch this all over again the following day! I don't normally say or think that about any film these days!

Jagdeep, I'm not sure if we watched the same transfer but what I saw did look disappointing and my expectations from DVD's are realistic especially DVD's from India. I realize the movie was supposed to have a gritty feel but what i saw was dull, washed out colors and an overall anemic looking transfer that does not befit a movie released in 2012.

Even Gulaal (eagle home video release) looks way better than this.

Can someone who had seen this in the theatres comment?

I loved the presentation in theatre and the film it had grain, light and warm & neutral tones blended skilfully. Although I was slightly disappointed with the movie, I liked the way it looked in theatre.

Haven't seen the DVD, so can't tell, but I'd expect it to look good on BD.

Anurag Kashyap has hinted towards a Bluray of this film coming soon on twitter.

Ok so according to Anurag Kashyap's tweet the GOW blu-ray is out -

"Anurag of वासेपुर ‏@ankash1009 Also the GoW Bluray is out in the market"

But he doesn't elaborate any further

As much as I respect Anurag as a film maker, the fact is the guy is a dud when it comes to technical matters. He has little understanding of audio/video quality, nor does he care about it. He is also only interested in promoting himself and his movies with no room for criticism.

Just tweeted the following to him:
"Sincerely hope blu-ray is not as atrociously bad as the DVD Why do Indian film makers not care about their movies on home video?"

^I wouldn't say he is a dud technically given how he handles the technical aspects for the movie itself, but ya, most Indian film-makers don't give a damn as to how their films are presented on home video formats. I suspect most of the authoring studios apart from Ayngaran don't even take their approval for the encode.

Well, maybe not a total 'dud', but he certainly is not as well versed with audio/video technical knowledge one would expect from anyone who is actively in the business of film making. The fact is, there are other technicians who take care of the technical aspects of the films and the directors/producers are not necessarily well versed with the technical details of the audio codecs etc. My comments are based on some interactions I have had with him in the past on twitter. His responses have always been quite dismissive in spite of the fact that he clearly does not seem to know much about DVDs & Blu-rays.

I would agree with you here. It's strange since he has said on many occasions that he is a self-taught filmmaker due to his huge personal collection of foreign films on DVD

I watched GoW 2 last night on DVD. This time I was more disappointed by the film itself. I thought the 2 films in it's entirety would be meaningful but the second part appears to be more of the first- the son now taking the role of the father, more gritty violence and a few more eccentric characters thrown in to the mix. Even the (dark) humor seemed forced ...

AK is definitely a talented filmmaker but his films of late come across as pretentious and fails to engage the viewer after a point. I found this with "That Girl in Yellow Boots" and even more with this outing. I hope he does not become a caricature of his former self like his mentor Ram Gopal Varma!

What else were you even expecting other than gritty violence? The story was set up in 1 just so it could blow all over Wasseypur in part 2. I thought Part 2 exceeded part 1 because of the characters mainly (Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Definite's characters mainly). The storyline was still mostly unpredictable other than that.

I'll agree that Girl in Yellow Boots was horrible and pretentious as hell. Hated this movie.

Watched Part 2 yesterday and OMG I am completely blown away. I have never ever see anything like this on Indian Cinema. I am a big Manoj Bajpayee fan but according to me Nawazudin Siddiqui stole the show. He was superb. I hope they give a better BD transfer to this movie!

An engaging story perhaps?
Nawazuddin Siddiqui's character was perhaps the most awaited after the little we saw of him in Part 1. But his and the Definite character seemed contrived and nonsensical after a point in part 2....

I don' think the movie is terrible but I guess my expectations were high and eventually felt a good idea was wasted at the expense of staging grand scenes that did nothing towards the narration. AK appears to be good at that
