Im with Mark Kermode on this, its a gimmick, just as it was in the 60's just as it was in the 80's the only difference this time is the technology, the problem this time is cinemas have invested a lot of money on this fad and now have to justify the cost so obviously push 3D as much as possible, the studios know that cinemas have invested a lot of cash in it so have to support the cinemas by providing them with 3D films - a vast majority of which are post converted, for no other reason but to provide a 3D film to the cinema, in most cases it does nothing for the film at all its not added for any 'artistic' reason, its added in a desperate attempt to keep 3D on the screens

Cinema visiting numbers are falling (even more so for 3D if you look at REAL figures not the ones fudged by the cinema/studios) there will always be a few big films in the year that do well but in general they are falling It must be a tiny minority of the movie buying public who have a 3D TV setup, so I cant see 3D Blu ray sales to be anything special...so who are the studios making these 3D films for? Avatar arrived and was hailed as the future of cinema but then Hollywood have dug 3D's grave by releasing far too much crap in 3D so have alienated their audience who cant see what value they are getting from the increased ticket price, 3D's 'honeymoon period' is well and truly over, 3D ticket sales fell last year to around 20% of total sales, and will no doubt fall more this year, its only a matter of time before its gone...
Absolute tosh.

As an example Avengers
· Highest grossing opening weekend in IMAX’s history (3D)
. Audience 52% 3D

Quote from the movie blog
"A few things one could notice while analyzing with statistics.
3D Helps the Bottom Line: In my mind, there’s little doubt the 3D surcharge inflated the grosses for “The Avengers.” Recently, consumers have opted for the traditional 2D especially when families attend a movie. (The more children in the group, the more likely the adult who pays will pick 2D) This is not the case for “The Avengers.” People whom decided to watch it in 3D were the consumers who made the better choice"

Other statistics

Weekend of June 8, 2012:

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted– $60.4M Box Office. $27.2M in 3D (45%)
Prometheus: $50M Box Office. $27M in 3D (54%)

How has 2011 compared to 2012

Average for the 18 month period was 52%. When Hollywood gives us the option, more people pay the premium, wear the glasses and go 3D.
2011: 51% saw movies in 3D when they had the option.
2012: It is went up to 56% the first 6 months of this year and we still have The Amazing Spider-Man, Ice Age, Great Gatsby and The Hobbit to come

So Bobthesub and Mark Kemode...hardly a flash in the pan gimick

It's like internet Chinese whispers.
Reminds me of Terminator 3. Jonathan Mostow was asked a quick question about doing an Ultimate Edition, like T2, and he said it would take X amount of work to do blah blah, but didn't confirm anything. From then on people had it in their minds that a UE was a given, much like Prometheus.

Don't get me wrongo, Sir Ridley loves his extended editions so it's not like one won't ever happen for Prometheus, but I don't get that vibe from the interview. There is material which was cut from the film, no doubt, but it won't be integrated back into the movie on the first release.

I can't wait for The Hobbit, planning to go opening weekend but there's no way in hell am I watching anything that long in 3D. If all opening screens are 3D I'll be waiting. So be it.

And yeah, they're wrong, nothing can be a flash in the pan gimick that has come and gone so many times as 3D.

But that's the point being made; if the majority of cinemas have 80% of their showings in 3D then 52% watching the 3D is actually worse than average, with most people, given the choice, opting for 2D.

I knew the 3D on Prometheus was mostly 'depth addition' rather than the "oooh it's popped out of the screen" rubbish so was OK to see it in such BUT I'm another who would have chose 2D if the performances had been equal and I could have gone to one that fit my schedule but it wasn't possible.

No it wasnt, there were numerous points made, that was his opening argument but ended " 3D ticket sales fell last year to around 20% of total sales, and will no doubt fall more this year, its only a matter of time before its gone..."
I was answering his whole anti 3D sentiment

The leaked german specs only list 15 mins of deleted scenes sadly so I smell a double dip when part 2 comes out. Ridley did say the blu release should contain 30 mins of extra footage but never confirmed it would be put back into the movie as he prefers the theatrical cut.
2 hour making of sounds awesome though!

I didn't think we were getting it that early, I would have thought the pre-order would already be up on play etc....

Maybe sainsburys pulling a fast one?

Agreed.

I think it's likely Fox will release a relativity basic release this year and then do big collector's extended edition next year.

Unless there's some uber-cool collector's set that's released it looks like I'll be holding off.
