Movie that you hated, now enjoy?

I'm happy to boast that I saw "Blade Runner" and "The Thing" both on opening night in 1982, same night, same theater. I loved both immediately.

I was already an adult, though. Certainly, there are films from my childhood that I didn't fully appreciate until I was older.

The Matrix Resurrections... I broke one of my own cardinal rules which is to not put expectations at the forefront when watching something for the first time. I was just used to The Matrix brand being a certain way, that I didn't see what Lana was really going for.

Watching again made me realize that I initially rejected a rather clever and still imaginative slice of sci-fi cyberpunk, much like the first film. The sequels were what amped it up to epic blockbuster levels, and Resurrections brought it back down to the fundamentals. I enjoy it as a nice epilogue to the trilogy.

When I was young I watched a documentary on public television with my parents.
The film was called High School by Frederick Wiseman. I hated that movie.
Now much later in life I've grown to love documentaries and Frederick Wiseman is one of my favorite directors. His films don't entertain...they educate.

While I don't love them now or anything, re-watching Ridley's Scott's Hannibal and Legend last year (the former on Kino's UHD, the latter on Arrow's Blu) made me at least appreciate both for their visual beauty, whereas before I found the former repellant, and the latter obnoxiously twee and tacky. Prior to those viewings I hated both of them.

Lost Highway

Let’s just say that this absolutely NOT the movie you want to see for the first time while you’re in the middle of a really bad break-up and aren’t feeling too tightly wrapped or particularly predisposed to seeing the good in your fellow humans (especially of the opposite sex). It’s like it was specifically designed to go right to my darkest place and start throwing salt around. It felt like a personal affront.

I have since grown to love it unconditionally.

Raimi's Spider-Man movies. Not necessarily hated, just didn't care much. Now I love them. I don't know, Bully Maguire memes or just general quality of the movies + innocence of superhero movies before shared universes madness.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy. I didn't quite get the tone of it initially, but everything clicks in it the right way. Soundtrack is great too.

Ghost in the Shell 2017. I don't think I love it now (it's an alright, rather toned down remake, gorgeous to look at), but I don't hate it the way I did initially.

Gardians of the Galaxy vol 2: The sound track just wasn't working for me the first time I watched it along with the tone of the film but it was a master piece upon re watching in 3d knowing the tonal beats. Its one of the few movies I have watched that gets better with each re watching.I would not say i hated it even on the first watching but my opinion definitely improved with time.

Peter pan: I watched it when I was 2 young so either it or the ride scared me. The movie is kind of based around a dark concept though Disney try's to make it lighter and happier.

I didn't like Tron Legacy very much the first time I saw it, but that was due to emotional issues I was facing at the time. Now, its one of my fave films, and I like it even more than the original.

I absolutely do NOT want to spiral yet another thread into a Star Wars discussion, so this is just in the spirit of this specific thread topic... but easily the most profound examples for me are the three Star Wars prequels. I was just the right age to absolutely loathe those flicks when they came out: I was 28 in 1999, and at the height of my "cinephile pretentiousness". All I could see were all the ways the new movies WEREN'T what I wanted from "my Star Wars", whatever the heck that means.

And yet... despite vocally hating Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith in particular (ironically, I've always kinda liked Attack of the Clones), I kept watching them over and over, like I was trying to train myself to like them -- 'cuz I actually like liking things, lol. But it just didn't "take"; watching Episodes I and III were always like pulling teeth.

Then in 2015 something miraculous happened. In March of that year, the first full-length trailer for Force Awakens dropped, with that amazing shot of the crashed Star Destroyer in the desert dunes. Like a light-switch turning on, I suddenly wanted to enjoy "everything Star Wars". I bought the prequel BD set that very same day, poured some Jack Daniels for myself as I dimmed the lights in the home theater... and ENJOYED THE HELL OUTTA THEM for the first time ever. I continue to thoroughly enjoy all eleven live-action SW features -- even without my buddy Jack.

I basically learned to "get over myself" and enjoy certain flicks for what they ARE rather than what I wished they would be. It's a practice that's made me a happier movie-goer... and maybe even a slightly happier person overall.

Nothing wrong with enjoying movies that you can't actually make a good argument for "artistically." I think it was Pauline Kael who once said something to the effect of "Movies are so rarely great that you may as well learn to enjoy trash." Which isn't to say that criticism is invalid but that some stuff simply can't be defended except with a shrug and "Whatever -- It makes me happy."

I'm with you on Star Wars -- I'll watch any of them just for the visuals, if nothing else. It's enough for me. I love me some space opera -- good, bad or indifferent. Storywise the new trilogy is pretty much a sh*tshow, but they sure are a sight to behold and, really, that's all I care about sometimes.

Bicentennial Man -really quite a sweet film.

Independence Day Resurgence. I didn't hate it upon release but now I really don't get the negativity.

I once thought Army of Darkness was the dumbest ****ing thing I had ever seen. Years later from that viewing I caught it again one autumn sunday afternoon on TV and I instantly got it.

And while not on the complete reversal I was luke warm on Stalker the first time I saw it but appreciated it more the second go around.

I found Army of Darkness to be such a disappointment after ED 1 & 2.

Bloodless, far too broad and slapstick, total lack of claustrophobia.

It's probably my most watched of the trilogy...

I suspect part of the reason the film failed at the time besides the forced changes and ET was that it kind of fell between two camps.

It wasnt pulpy enough for the action blockbuster market but it was viewed as too pulpy for the serious drama market in an era were sci fi was still looked down on.
