The James Bond sketch was in 2D...
I watched the Olympics highlights in 3D tonight and here's my reaction to the actual 3D... The Titles were professionally done and looked great in 3D. There were also a couple of vignettes at the end with a long jumper and hammer thrower in slow motion....they looked as stunning as the athletics part of the LG 3D demo (with the long jumper and sand coming out into the camera etc). The actual athletics was a mixed bag though. There was some decent 3D depth at times but it was inconsistent and lots of shots were in 2D. Ironically, the 3D shots of the spectators and scenes outside the stadiums etc had excellent quality 3D and looked better than most of the actual events themselves. The best was the judo highlights as the camera was at floor level and the audience looked really nicely set back in the distance with a good separation. Overall it was a mixed bag....some excellent 3D, some just OK 3D with the occasional 2D shots interspersed. Overall 3.5/5 Gae Last edited by Gae; 07-28-2012 at 11:20 PM. |

Nobody talking over the ceremony in 3d. Thye were just as silly here in the US during the 2d version as the two guys you mentioned. I didn't notice 2d shots being mixed in with the 3d. Although we had ads put in strange place, they appeared to always pickup where the cut out for the ads. Also most of the ads were in 3d and some were interesting. One whole sequence that was cut from NBC 2d version was shown in 3d (the sequence was the one just before the athletes started coming in). Note the James Bond sequence was in 3d, but perhaps converted. It wasn't as obvious in all parts of the sequence. Last edited by Tns49; 07-29-2012 at 11:51 AM. |

They are not sending the correct signal to automaticly switch to 3d. You have to manually switch to show the side by side as 3d.

There was one major "wow" moment last night. The 3D shot looking down the Kayak slalom course. Fantastic depth and you could see all the gates layered back into the distance. There were other very nice shots last night too amongst the ligatory weaker 3D and 2D shots.
So far, the 3D coverage has been pretty good but personally I feel "distanced" from the actual events though. These highlights don't really show enough of each event in order to build up any sense of excitement and I can't be bothered watching much of it live in 2D as I'm not that much of an Olympic's fan. ![]() Gae Last edited by Gae; 07-30-2012 at 12:04 PM. |

(Since I can't get Comcast Premium without shelling out $75/mo., I'm just sitting and waiting for NBC/Universal's inevitable Memorial Highlights disk by December or February, and the possibility that this one might have a 3-D release, to recoup their costs and footage. Until then, I've just had to take everyone's word on the Opening, track and gymnastics, imagine what they'll look like in their proper dimensions, and hope my patience pays off later.) |

I DVR'd every DirecTV broadcast and I was happy to be able to watch in 3D. But I thought the whole 24 hour delay really hurt the whole 3D promotion. Also, the resolution was pretty crappy, like someone else said, it was like watching a DVD. I think for the next time, a prime-time broadcast in 3D and at the true 1080 resolution, would go a long way for 3D.

I'm still waiting for the 3D footage of the Beijing China opening ceremonies to be released in native full HD 3D, and that was said to be filmed in 3D during the actual ceremony live broadcasts at the time. ![]() ![]() Paul |
