I am certainly going to get this at some stage, probably when the price has went down by a few quid,I loved it as a kid and later bought the DVD but the P/Q on that was so abysmal I didn't even bother watching it all and gave it to a mates son.

If I remember correctly the German release had DTS-HD MA, does the UK release also feature this?

Their website states PCM 2.0 only. That really doesn't bother me, since it was a 1986 film and the Disney DVD from 2004 was Dolby 2.0 as well. There's nothing wrong with having the original audio mix for a film, especially a niche title like this.

An interesting question would be who exactly created the 5.1 remix to begin with? Both the King Records release from Japan and the Splendid Film release from Germany are in 5.1 audio, but they presumably just licensed the film from PSO...

So does anyone know if I already have the German release, is this release the same (just without the master HD track)?

The upcoming U.K. release looks to have a new exclusive commentary track. I'm contemplating buying it myself for just that reason, though I'm still on the fence, as the R1 DVD is plenty good for me, considering how seldom I watch this film, and it's not one I planned on upgrading in my collection. If I can get it for a decent price, I'll pick it up...

Yeah, I'm with you on that. I've seen comparisons between the UK DVD (which was horrible by all accounts) and the UK BD, but not between the US DVD and the UK BD. That would really help me make a decision...

I could grab comparable caps from the German release for anyone that can cap the U.K. release. From the review screenshots they look pretty similar though

They are. UK release is a bit brighter and the German compression looks a tad better in still shots, but I doubt it'd be obvious in motion.

I put my U.S. DVD in early this morning to take a look and compare it to the screenshots of the upcoming UK Blu release (and the previous UK DVD), and yeah, the UK DVD was quite poor. The Blu does look a little better than the U.S. DVD from what I could see, but not enough to warrant an expensive upgrade for me. While I do enjoy this movie, and would like to hear the commentary track, it's not one I would watch often enough to make it worth the $. Again, if the price drops at some point, I'll reconsider...

OK, I'm in for this release. Seeing as there's not many titles I have left in my DVD collection that I'll be upgrading to Blu anyway, I've decided I'll give this one a go... more than anything for the commentary track. I can already tell this release isn't going to garner top ratings in the PQ or AQ departments, but I think it will be an improvement that most fans will appreciate. Count me in with the ranks of those who will compare it to their Region-1 DVD when they get it.

I'd say that this one should probably be about half the price it currently is. As it calculates out, it would cost $26 or $27 for a U.S. buyer to import it (shipping included). My guess is that it will sell decently in the U.K., solely because of how poor the previous U.K. DVD was, but there's not many people here in the U.S. that will pay that kind of money for what looks to me to be a mediocre transfer, especially when the U.S. DVD itself is of good quality...

In comparing it to the caps of the U.K. Blu, I'd say the U.S. DVD rates better than just "ok."

The UK DVD looks so awful, I'm surprised it wasn't recalled.

Yes, I'd imagine that the difference between the two is minimal.

Gave this a watch...happy I bought it . A pleasant (though not substantial) upgrade over the Region 1 DVD, biggest improvement to me visually seemed to be the interior of the spacecraft...solid audio track, no complaints...Having seen this film countless times, my favorite aspect was the informative (and enjoyable) commentary...well worth a purchase for fans in general, and everyone in the UK who has that awful R2 DVD...

Video is AVC 1080p 1.77:1, audio is PCM 2.0, optional English subtitles, disc is Region-free...

So many great lines in this film by Paul Reubens ...

Anyone else laugh as hard as I do when, early on in the film, David is walking through the woods (with his dog, Bruiser) to meet up with his younger brother Jeff?

Bruiser: [Whines]

David: (responding) What is it, macho man? Not afraid of a little wind, are ya?

Bruiser: [Yelps]

David: See, Bruiser...What you gotta do is be a "take charge" guy...that's what the girls like...

Bruiser: [Whines]

David: Come on boy...Wanna know my real problem? I don't know what I want out of life anymore. As a young dog you might find that hard to understand, but...

[Twig Snaps]

David: Jeff?...Jeff?...

[Rustling in the woods)

Bruiser: [Barks]

David: Get back, Jack! I've gotta gun!

Good Lord that is some of the worst (not to mention "unnecessary") dialog I've ever heard...A kid at the ripe old age of "12" , telling his dog what it needs to do to "get the ladies" ...And I don't know what it is about the "Get back, Jack!" line, but everytime I hear that I just roll my eyes and laugh for about 10-15 seconds ...

Actually, as funny as it may sound, the more I watch this movie, the more Joey Cramer's character just annoys me...Thankfully, Paul Reubens carries the film ...
