Was going through some old boxes at the parents place yesterday and found my original Star Wars trilogy set on VHS in mint condition, never been watched. I wonder what versions of the films they are, I'm sure they will be the originals before he decided to tamper which was for the DVD release if I remember correctly? Would love to actually watch them and compare!

Will shelf them next to my DVD trilogy (Not in anywhere near as good shape unfortunately) and my Blu-ray saga.

Post a quick photo, I'll be able to tell you which versions they are

This is my VHS set, the torn red sticker says "Original Star Wars Last Time Available". The box says it's from '95, I think I picked it up in '97.

Ahhhh.. the infamous 'Faces' set. Absolutely, positively the last time ever available on the home video format. Original Trilogy versions, but a little too much DVNR for me.

I'm thinking of getting some new shelves. I currently have 3 low profile shelves but they're full up and they take up so much room... so I'm thinking I want higher bookshelf style shelves.

My main question is... amongst all the reading I've been doing, they keep recommending to anchor the shelves to the wall (since they're so tall and heavy with not much contact with the ground). I'm renting so this is not an option for me. Does everyone anchor their shelves? Would it be unsafe not to?

I don't have any children, but we do often have nieces and nephews visiting so I'm worried that curious little hands might cause it to tip...

I have anchored all my shelves to the walls, but we're lucky we own the place. Wouldn't have it any other way as (although banned from the library) little paws like to scale the shelves like mountaineers.

Yeah, that's definitely a major (deal breaker) concern. Can't risk it.

Any renters have any solutions?

Just had a look on the box and they are the '97 Special Edition version, so I'm guessing not the original version of the films, pretty much confirmed by hdgfs's post, bummer lol.

Yeah those are the SE, same versions that were re-released at the cinema back in 97. I'd still hang onto them though, there are still differences between the 97 VHS and the official DVD release (the main being Anakin in ROTJ).

I've got the original of 1 and 2, still need to get 3.

I just re-encoded the disc from the Ltd Edition DVD releases.. made it anamorphic..

Do you have carpet or floor boards? I'm a little paranoid, so I anchor all mine, but if you have carpet, it's definitely a better idea to secure them.

If you have a flat surface like floorboards, you might be able to get away with weighing the bottom down with heavy books. (DVDs/BDs probably aren't heavy enough)

They look like they're going to topple over when it's empty, but once you start weighing it down with stuff, it seems better.

Carpet.

Damn, I really need to sort something out because if I'm just going to be using more of these low profile (they're about 1.3m high I'd say... but I'm horrible at estimates haha), I'm going to run out of room quick smart! Maybe it's time to store most of my DVDs away in tubs and just stick with the blu-rays on the shelves.

You could always attach 'feet' on to them. Like get two foot long thin pieces of wood and attach them to the bottom sticking out.

I don't have my new shelves secured to the wall or floor, and I didn't with old shelves either. Both my old and new shelves are 240mm in depth, which is thinner than your average shelves, but my new shelves are higher and longer than my old ones, at 2.1 metres high and 1.25 metres in length each. They are very steady with or without anything on them, and won't easily tip over. Someone would have to intentionally push them over for them to fall over. I personally don't think you need to worry. However I could be wrong, as it really depends on the shelves you buy. I remember when I owned particle board shelves years ago that were purchased from the Reject Shop and K-Mart, they weren't very steady. Though they would fall backwards into the wall, not forward.

Very cool, bud. I had a set of the original films on video from before the "Special Edition" release, but I have a horrible feeling I might have dumped them when the revised versions came out (believing Lucas' PR guff about how this was how the films were "always meant to look", I suspect). I've still got the first release of the Special Eds on video — in really good nick, but probably not worth very much — plus I found my boxed set of the first release of the soundtracks on CD from the early 80s — forgot I had that, and only found it when I was looking for the videos. I used to have the soundtracks on unopened mint-condition LPs as well — they would have been worth more — but they got burgled a long time back.

Yeah, I sometimes wonder where I'd be if I'd banked all the money I spent on videos and LPs and CDs and DVDs. And now, of course, Blu-rays.

Hmmm that's interesting... I'm not much of a handy woman (and the man of the house is even less handy!) but that's an interesting idea. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks a lot

Yeah, you're definitely right. I probably wouldn't know whether to trust it until I got it set up and filled and could see for myself how steady it is. Thanks a lot for your reply. Good to hear that not everyone feels the need to anchor

I rent

I had my 2 DVD/BD storage shelves anchored at the last place and patched it when I left

Where I am now at the moment iv got them chocked up at the front underneath to slightly tilt them backwards seems to do the trick just use card or what iv used is thin strips of plastic
