Default The 50Hz Clearinghouse

Ok I found a listing stating a running time of 97:08. Since the US disc runtime is 101:15 (very close to 25/24 + 24/23.97 slowdowns) I assume that running time listing is correct. I've approved Jason One's format submission too.

I still would hope a member from here said specifically enough : "Yes I have the UK Spearhead and I tested its native output and my display/player says 1080i 50Hz" but hopefully the updated spec is correct. (I don't have the Spearhead disc)

I think we have most of the Doctor Who and related US/Canada vs UK and other 50Hz countries' specs correct but there's so many release iterations.

I have this UK disc which is encoded in 1080i / 25 fps. The time of 97:08 [min:sec] is also correct:

Default Dr Who Spearhead From Space.

Picked this up the other day and i am surprised there is no thread for this on here as it is a fantastic release. Just watched the first two episodes and bloody hell why did i not view classic Dr Who after all these years.

The story, PQ and presentation are spot on.

Highly Recommended.

I second that recommendation! Great disc of a true classic of classic Dr Who.

Shame it's the only one from classic Who shot entirely on film rather than videotape and therefore benefiting from a blu-ray presentation. Actually The Sontaran Experiment might be another, but as a two-parter it'd need some serious extras included to get a blu-ray bump.

Easiest thing to do is put the title in the search bar then check to see if it has forum links.

The two threads are at the bottom (or just click Forum).

Yeah - it's a great story. John Pertwee is my favourite doctor.

The Blu-Ray looks fantastic as well. It's such a shame that this was the only classic DW story to be shot on film.
If only the BBC had filmed them all on 16mm and saved all the episodes

Still, I'm looking forward to the BD of Power Of The Daleks next year. It will be interesting to see what the animation looks like in HD and colour.

Eight of the nine stories in Pertwee's first two seasons are great or bordering on it with Colony In Space being the odd one out.

Inferno (series 7 story 4) is such good fun and genuinely exciting, in fact it's perhaps the best Doctor Who story ever.

Such a shame that these two season are in a few cases by far the crumbiest looking re surviving elements.

All of the outdoor shooting for Tom Baker's first series, including the Sontaran Experiment and Terror of the Zygons (as you probably know this was intended for series 12 but bumped to opening story of 13), was shot on video.

Thanks for clarifying. In my memory I assumed that The Sontaran Experiment was on film as it's all location shooting.

I only know this for sure because I recently watched the Robot and Sontaran Experiment DVDs and the making of documentaries for both talk about the production crew were really happy about finally being allocated an outside broadcast truck and as of then state of the art light weight video cameras.

That's because many survive only as NTSC recovered from US TV stations as the BBC junked their copies so PAL -> NTSC -> PAL.
This is why Inferno is so bad.

Others only have black and white film recordings and then colour has been added back in various ways (chromo dots, off air NTSC domestic video or colourisation).

Sorry to be pedantic but only Robot and Sontaran Experiment where shot entirely on OB video. All location shooting for Genesis of the Daleks, Revenge of the Cybermen and Terror of the Zygons was completed on film.

From memory, Seeds of Doom and Stones of Blood were the only other all-video Tom Baker productions.
