Agreed. I have to say, I'm glad they are releasing Tristana and it seems to be a quality release, but seeing their post regarding the fact that Criterion had had the film disappoints me. I had been hoping for it to be enter the CC for a while and that's the way I'd prefer to have it.

Still, I'm glad we are getting it in a quality release.

For what stock you can place in the reviews on DVDBeaver, it does have this to say:

"On the version, from Cohen Media: "The version of the feature TRISTANA that we are releasing is exactly the same version that Criterion released on VHS and Laserdisc in the mid 1990's - though the quality is far superior. Our scan is from an original negative, as confirmed by one of Criterion's lead producers (This restoration began with Criterion, but not completed before their license expired). We've checked the negative and there are no physical cuts to the ending montage sequence introducing new material. However, we were made aware that a few shots in the end montage differ from the version available in Europe. We accessed this ending and include it as an alternate ending.""

So really, the quality pretty much is Criterion, from an PQ/AQ standpoint. They even worked on it. I'm fantastically OK with not having a "C" in the top left corner if it means having more Bunuel digitally mastered.

And at a significantly cheaper price: $14.38 (shipped from Import CDs), vs. a minimum of $20.xx (B & N Criterion sale).

I am just finishing up my copy of the Thief of Bagdad and I have high hopes for Cohen...

But now I am curious as to how they pick what their next release is? I consider myself a film buff, but I have never even heard of Perfect Understanding?

Oh well! Hopefully it's good and hopefully Sudden Fear is announced soon!

If we have learned anything as home video fans in the last 15 years, it's that trying to figure out why something gets released is a futile exercise.

I have hundreds of small films on Blu-ray. As we speak, THE ATOMIC KID and CHINA GATE are on the UPS truck to me.

But there are countless films that are infinitely more well-known and commercially viable. I've come to the conclusion that it's not worth my time to try and unravel the mystery of BD releasing .

Why does Perfect Understanding cost $10 more than Tristana? It's an 80 minute film, so no need for two discs, and it's not like they're charging more for a disc with extras, as Tristana has a commentary and featurette. The only way the price difference would be acceptable would be if there was a second BD disc with a full-length Swanson doc or something along those lines.

Well...only a 5.00 difference on Import CDs. Still not that bad at 18.00

I couldn't agree more! It's such an influential film and probably D.W. Griffith's finest film.

Right, it just seemed strange that it would have such a higher price tag then either Thief of Bagdad or Tristana. I'm buying it in any case.

Just speculating, but it's possible that the higher price on PERFECT UNDERSTANDING could have something to do with it being rarer and requiring more up-front investment to get a film restoration and an HD master, and maybe some digital restoration, before authoring a disc. I suspect that the other films merely needed a new HD scan from existing material and little need for much in the way of restoration fine-tuning (for example THIEF OF BAGDAD has always looked very good in any version I've seen over the past 40 years, and their disc really looks no better nor worse) before the disc authoring. I guess we'll see how good it looks compared to the others when it finally comes out.

That's actually what I eventually figured the reason would be. Makes sense.

I see myself buying it in any case, more out of curiosity over Gloria Swanson. She seems interesting, but I only know her from Sunset Blvd. and Airport 1975.... I'm not ashamed

They could have also realized that their MSRP was too low to be profitable on these catalog titles and have adjusted accordingly.

Is that a Blu-ray case or a DVD case? It looks kind of large for a blu-ray case.
