Kevin Feige Says Joss Whedon's Involvement With THE AVENGERS 3 Is "Still Being Determined"

"It’s still being determined," Kevin Feige told Screen Rant at the junket for Thor: The Dark World when they asked him about whether a deal is in place for Joss Whedon to return for The Avengers 3. "All of his efforts right now are in what he’s doing for us primarily, obviously, writing and prepping Age of Ultron but also in reading the drafts of the films in phase 2, watching early cuts and a) to inform him where the characters are going to end up in the beginning of Age of Ultron and also to get his input and his wisdom into all of these. But right now it’s all about leading up to Age of Ultron." When Whedon's deal with Marvel Studios was first publicly announced, it was specified that it would end in June 2015. For that reason, it's likely that he won't have much involvement with Ant-Man, but that's hardly a surprise when it's very much Edgar Wright's baby. However, that doesn't mean that The Avengers: Age of Ultron director won't be involved with "Phase Three"; after all, if he has any sense, he'll wait until The Avengers sequel breaks even more box office records before signing a new contract!

+1 He needs to be around for phase 3. I can't see any reason why he wouldn't be involved with phase 3 unless he doesn't want to.

If he is confident enough about his work, and based on the results of Avengers. I would hold off signing until box office results came in for Avengers Age of Ultron.

Make Bank next contract if it all goes to plan. A minor gamble for some potential serious pay bump.

Give Joss whatever he wants. Would be a terrible idea to change leaders going into the 3rd part. Especially if they go the infinity gauntlet route.

I'd rather wait too see how Avengers 2 turns out...if its even on par (let alone better) than Avengers, then of course we'd want him back, but what if he becomes a one trick pony? Be silly to give him the regins on number 3 if god forbid 2 flopped

I bet Whedon is on as maybe an consulting role or producer and writer or co-writer of Avengers 3 but does not direct. He has lots of other stuff he wants to do and these films monopolize his time and energy for years at a time.

Also as for their "box office records" comment. I don't think Avengers 2 will match the first, much less outperform it. It will do extremely well, but I don't think it will exceed the first film's numbers.

I dunno.
Guess it depends how many fans are lost during phase 2, but I could see it doing the same BO as the first, at least. Maybe not breaking any records of course.

Chris Pratt's Star-Lord to appear in THE AVENGERS 3
Film Aiming For 2018?

Maybe you’re like me, and the Guardians of The Galaxy mean nothing to you. I’ve never been a major comic book guy and, when I did collect, it was always books for the Holy Trinity of Spider-Man, Superman, and Batman. So I’d never even heard of the Guardians before the movie was announced. However, the buzz around the film is very strong and I’ll admit, the more I hear and see, the more I think you can pencil me in for a Thursday Midnight showing.

It would appear Marvel knows they’ve got something special on their hands, too. Another potential sleeper hit, somewhat like Iron Man- where they took a character that was never exactly the “face” of the company, more of a B-lister, and turned him into a huge deal with that 2008 movie. It would appear they think the film is tracking strong enough to turn the Guardians of The Galaxy into household names. Because aside from green-lighting an all-new animated series for the superhero team, JoBlo is reporting that a sequel has all ready been slotted for a 2016 release.

That’s right, Marvel expects Guardians of The Galaxy 2 to be part of Phase 3, and it’s even possible that the film could be the one to go toe-to-toe with Batman vs Superman on May 6 of that year. That last part isn’t confirmed, but Marvel only has two dates locked down for 2016, so there aren’t many other options.

Marvel’s high ambitions for the project don’t surprise me, though, since this jives with what a source of mine told me last month. Which was that Marvel fully intends for, at the very least, Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord to be in Avengers 3- which likely wouldn’t come out until 2018. So it makes sense that they’re going to continue to promote and expand these characters for the next few years.

So what do you think out there? Is Marvel nuts for having so much faith in Guardians of The Galaxy? Is their faith in the project instilling faith in you? On a scale of 1-10, what’s your excitement level for that movie?

As was said in the GotG 2 thread, it's pretty much a given that the Guardians will turn up in Avengers 3 due to the Thanos factor. The same way that it makes sense that we'd be getting another GotG film before Avengers 3.

so is Avengers 3 likley to be an ending of sorts?

With either a new part of the MCU being created/explored after that, or will they just continue on to Avengers 4, 5 etc I wonder

In a sense, yes. Phase 3 is the end. It will continue with Phase 4, but most actors will be recast, mainly IM, Thor and Cap.

It will be nice if they let the roles breathe a bit before recasting. Like, at least for Phase 4 just don't use the original Avengers, focus on building the new faces from Phase 3, and culminate that cycle with a different team-up. Give the original characters a couple years before giving them new faces.

I'm sure that's what they'll do. We'll probably get sequels for the new characters that are showing up in Phase 3 and films for more newer characters before bringing back the original 'big 3'.
