I bought the Terminator Anthology on bluray. I didn't NEED it at the time, but the packaging lured me in

I've intentionally not bought a BD because of packaging... Friends (The Complete Series) and Planet of the the Apes Collection... I'll be able to get the individual seasons of Friends and bought the individual Apes releases.

I did begrudgingly the Mel Brooks Collection, assuming it would not show up in better packaging. Whoops!

I'd never buy a movie I didn't like JUST because the packaging looks cool. I'm a film fan before I'm a collector. I love the movies themselves. That being said, when it comes to movies I actually like.... Yes, I do tend to pick out the more nicely packaged versions of them (ala steelbooks, digibooks...)

Yes, because I love artwork. It's no different than buying a poster, painting or sculpture. I love editions that look amazing on screen as well as off the screen and will pay top dollar to obtain them.

Never. The false notion that neat packaging, slips, etc., make a movie considerably more valuable, more collectable is just that, false.

I collect vinyl and this has been proven over and over again. For example, an original copy of Dark Side of the Moon (Harvest label, both posters, and sticker sheet) is worth maybe a 15-20% premium, and that's a best-case scenario

As a general rule I don't purchase blu-rays based on the packaging since once I load a blu-ray into the changer the packaging gets put away. Although I do have a number of special editions or box sets the only one I did purchase because of the packaging is Star Trek and I bought it from a member here on Blu-ray.com...

I dont purchase due to the packaging. Do I wait on something I want k owing a better package is coming. Maybe. If there are multiple editions does packaging come into play, probably. Im in the minority but I dont care about extra's or how the film was made etc. So specifically I am purchasing the second season of game of thrones at best buy for pretty packaging over extra content at wally world or target.

I am specifically not buying something due to packaging. I want the entire entourage series but the bigger than standard bluray turns me off. It sucks because I want to see the wire, sopranos, oz etc get blu releases so I feel like I should support it.

If I go to a store and they have multiple versions of a movie, I'll go with the better packaging. I did this with Jaws, the Digibook was nice. I'd never go out of my way to get nicer packaging nor would I buy a movie I don't like just because of the packaging.

This is basically my position. I'd never buy a movie I don't plan on watching again just for the packaging, but I like to get the nicest edition possible of the movies I do want to get. And I may very well get a movie I already own in a steel or digibook - but I have to really like it.

And regarding the discussion earlier (since I actually AM a psychologist, not only on the internet ) - It always irks me when collectors judge other collectors. There's no real NEED to own movies, especially not hundreds of them. You can't say you're a collector for rational reasons, come on. We're all a bit "crazy" in most peoples eyes. Sure, certain collectors spend money on things I don't care about, or I may find having shelves of sealed steelbooks excessive- then again, those collectors probably have more money to spend than I do. What do I know, and who am I to judge? You yourself know if your collecting is getting out of control or if its impacting your life in a negative way - if it isn't, don't let anybody else tell you so.

No I haven't The Alien Egg would have been cool to have though, I picked up a regular edition of a movie because the steel book was about 3 more dollars, I don't need most movies in steel books. Although if there is a steel book for the same price as the regular edition of course I will pick it up.

Wow, thanks for this. I knew they sold empty replacement Blu-Ray cases, but I had no idea they sold these. I can re-cover Last Year at Marienbad and The Man Who Fell to Earth while I'm at it.

Sucked into buying a movie because the cover looks pweddy.. What a complete waste of money - What is you plan with Peter Pan? To pull it out every 6 months, put it on the table and just admire the cover while you eat your dinner?

I only buy movies I know I will watch, hopefully more than once (a few blind buy exceptions of course).
With that said, I sometimes find myself spending extra on unique or "special edition" packaging. If there's a Digibook option, I may go with that, or if the movie is really important, I get the royale with cheese, like the bat cowl edition of the DKR or Gigantic (can't fit on a shelf) edition of Lawrence of Arabia. Arrow Video releases with the switchable art covers are very attractive too and sometimes can be had for cheaper than whatever barebones U.S. release is floating around. Then there are the alternate color blu-ray cases. I'm going to import the UK version of Rock of Ages simply because the case is purple with glitter. Hey, it's more imaginative and I like how it blends with the cover art, don't judge me!
