Mendes showed us the whole fight, no frantic Greengrass/Megaton chopping.

My problem is the lack of colours. Maybe it was the cinema I was in and it will look more vivid on my TV? but I just felt the whole thing (minus Shanghai) was bland and gloomy. It was more like TWINE and less like Casino Royale.
I loved Casino Royale but Skyfall is by far the better looking movie.

It saddens me that The Oscars, or The Grammys (especially the Grammys) are viewed as a seal of approval when they just pander to generic, mainstream audiences.
The Oscars certainly don't just pander to any old generic crap - I agree it's a flawed system, but awards are given to films that have been commercially "unique". Something like Bond would never have been nominated because it is too mainstream and doesn't have enough "artistic merit", but something like The Artist is different enough to hang an award on. Do I think something like TA deserves an award more than Skyfall? Not at all.

I think Skyfall did a great job at ending the beginning/origins of James Bond to the Bond that people have come to know from previous films before Casino Royale '06. They showed the transition of bond from what we saw in CR and QoS to the bond that does his service for Queen and Country no matter the cost. They made Bond into the best secret agent when they had the two best agents trained under Judy Dench's 'M" while closing his past life and transition it into the him strictly being the "00 agent" people remember him to be.

I think we will see more of the old bond in the next movie. Now, will we see the same director from Skyfall, still remains to be seen. I just hope they get the best director for the script that is written.

Uhhh, I think you may have made my point for me and gotten to the entire point of why it was shot the way it was in terms of colors and vividness.

Your point about being bland and gloomy was exactly why it worked. The movie was supposed to be bland and gloomy, the story WAS glooomy. Directors use color/saturation/vividness (what ever you want to call it) to set a mood for the picture. In this case, the lack of color did exactly what is was supposed to do.

Sad, cold scenes/movies use a lack of color to higten that mood. Happpy, exciting, action scenes/movies tend to over saturate color to highten that particular mood and help portray that specific feeling. It's a prett ystandard practice that most directors employ as part of thier creative tool box.

Your observations are valid in that there was a drab, gloomy feel to the movie, however it wasn't poor cinematogrpahy, it was a creative choice.. and a good one at that.

Yes, I have watched them, otherwise I couldn't really comment on them. The problem is they're not really done in jest; yes, there's a certain amount of humour to them, but they've also added to a new wave of Internet people who simply think it's cool to "hate" on popular films.

When Skyfall was released, there was overwhelming amounts of people who claimed they loved it and it was amazing...now, suddenly, everyone thought it sucked and they hated it. I'm not saying that people didn't not like it when they watched it, or that people have changed their minds to fit in with the crowd, but it seems strange to me that an overall consensus has changed so rapidly.

Re: hater and lovers. That's mostly what you get online. If one is going to spend the time to post or produce a short, it is usually because one is emotionally driven to do so either positively or negatively. And let's face it: Nothing gets less love than the middle ground.

But there is something odd about Bond. At least for me. Being a fan for about 40 years, I have almost always LOVED them after first having seen them. Even Die Another Day. But after seeing that Arctic surfing nonsense a second time, you can't help but sober up. Of course, Skyfall is a superior film, but perhaps the high does fade a bit for many with this movie.
This is very true, and something that I'd never considered before.

That's a silly reaction. I think Deakins' photography was one of the best elements of SKYFALL but the poster is absolutely right to say that Awards are no measure of quality.

The whole notion of awards in relation to arts is nonsensical. In a 100 metre race, we can clearly see who the winner is; but there is no measure of "winning" in art. Art is not, by its very nature, about competition. And besides, Kubrick never won an Oscar, Hitchcock never won an Oscar, the list goes on and on - were they untalented directors?

Awards are highly political and they reward the mediocre far more often than they reward the excellent or innovative. We should be less in thrall to them, and to box-office receipts, imo. The word "franchise" should be banned - they've got us all speaking like we work in marketing.

Absolutely! Even his good movies are super-popular! Drive is maybe the most interesting item.

And for Bond 24 I would like a film that makes sense. I found Skyfall really entertaining, but there are simply too many major plot-holes to ignore. Everything, except the script, was awesome.

If they'll return to classic Bond, I think I won't give a damn about next Bond movies, just the way I didn't give a damn about every pre-Craig Bond movie ever made.

Good, then you won't be complaining on Internet boards about it.

Oh who am I kidding? Of course you will.

I've got to say that after watching Skyfall on Blu-ray, it did look a lot better, so my cinema is partly to blame, but I still prefer the more colourful look that CR had.

CR and QoS were more vibrant because of the locations, too. So much of Skyfall took place in London and Scotland. Totally drab. Not that I have anything against those locations--I've travelled there and the Lake District of England is among my favorite places on Earth. But Bond movies are defined by exotic locations and I just didn't get the choice to set so much of Skyfall, including the climax, in a dreary locale.

Hopefully the sequel will be more in the tradition of 007. No, I don't want a return to gimmicks, gadgets and schmaltz, but they can do right by the legacy of the franchise.

If Sam Mendes officially signs on to direct the next Bond film, I will be ecstatic! In my opinion, Skyfall is the best Bond film to date. I loved every second of the movie, and I'm left wanting more.

How can you say "they can do right by the legacy of the franchise" if you choose to pretend the first 20 Bond movies (or whichever ones you dislike) don't exist?

I started watching the Bond movies recently and I noticed a few nods to them in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. I've found 3 so far. I'll post another vid if I find any more.
