Honestly, while the page was loading, my first instinct was Hans Gruber. However, I think Vader is more iconic and is truly a universally memorable villain.

Vader is the easy choice but Gruber helped make Die hard 10x better than any other action movie from the era or even past the era.

For being memorable, there's no doubt in my mind that Darth Vader deserves this award. I'm not debating he's the best villain (although he is certainly up there in my opinion), but he is probably cinema's most iconic antagonist, which I think certainly falls down in majority to the spectacular work on The Empire Strikes Back. Sure, he was great in Star Wars and Return of the Jedi, but when I think of a villain, elements of Vader from Empire are always due to strike up, whether it is the now iconic Imperial March, 'that' plot twist or just his demanding presence in his instantly recognisable suit.
