I got around to watching this tonight, nothing special. I can see why it got such a lukewarm reaction during its theatrical run, its a very mediocre movie. I also didn't think the 3D was very good, it had its moments.

Watching The Croods trailer in the beginning, the trailer for this just doesn't do much for me. I know people made a big deal out of this movie and I'll pick it up. But I'm not really excited by this one. I was hoping that after seeing the trailer so many different times, it might grow on me but it hasn't.

Lol - I love how the MAIN Audio track is listed as "7.1" DTS-HD Master Audio, & after a week+, the Review in the Audio section STILL talks about the "5.1" DTS-HD MA track

The film's lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track is just as impressive, overabundant with energetic—but carefully considered—sound design.

Casey Broadwater is listed as the Reviewer for Epic. When you click on his name you get the Biography to his "Recent reviews" and if you click on the Contact Casey Broadwater link at the top right hand side you get Woodstove, which I assume must be his Blu-ray reviewer's alias name. On August 21, 2013 I posted:

FYI correction suggestion:
The Epic Blu-ray and Epic Blu-ray 3D reviews have an erroneous DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 designation located in both of the "Audio Quality" sections of each review. The English DTS_HD Master Audio track is 7.1 that is correctly listed in the pages top specifications.
No feedback or correction has been given to date.

Have to agree. The story kept nodding me off. Reminded me a bit of Arthur and The Invisibles...better visuals though on Epic. Regarding the 3D..for me..it was hit and miss (like you had stated). Some good depth shots and detail was good...but I thought the look was a bit on the soft side. Did not look sharp in detail to me. This could be as a result of the overall look of the animation and not the 3D. I may have to give this another chance. Really wanted to like this one but the story was just..meh. Best scene for 3D was the intro, imo.

I couldn't beleive I was watching a movie with the voice talents of Beyonce, Pitbull, and Steven Tyler...all in one flick!! The scene where Steven Tyler's character sings was just......

Cool

This is a disappointing transfer onto 3d Blu-ray imho. I remember the theatrical showing to be much sharper, more vibrant colors and a better 3d effect. Is it just me, or does this title look washed out all to hell? It's like the brightness is turned up so damn much it washes out the vibrant colors I remember seeing at the theatre!! And no, turning down the brightness and amping up the color in the tv menu does nothing to remedy the problem for me. The Blu-ray looks like crap to me compared to what I saw at the theatre.

I know, at that scene I begin to contemplate turning it off. I was far enough along in movie to stick it out.

My personal perception of the 3D rendering in Epic reminds me of Blue Sky Studio's 3D release of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 3D. Noticeable depth consistency almost on a par with the DreamWorks team mindset, but definitely differentiates in only having rare pop-out moments they reserve for a few specific points of visual emphasis.

Noticed this too! Probably an artistic choice for daylight that looks hazy on some 3D displays creating a look of softness. Never want to touch my system calibrations for unwanted visual anomalies, but found that the added visual enhancement with a Darbee Darblet, set to Full Pop settings, gives the picture a boost in perceived contrast, clarity & vibrancy that reproduces my theatrcal experience.

I'm not sure why there are negative comments about the 3D for this movie all of a sudden. There were great impressions before the release, and now suddenly the people that didn't like the 3D transfer are emerging from the woodwork.

I know I can't judge, as I only watched about 20 minutes last night, but... I thought it was brilliant thus far. The 3D had such great depth, and I thought the detail was quite sharp. Maybe when watching in 3D it is a little more difficult to discern the microscopic details?

And as for the actual film, my first impressions have been outstanding thus far. I feel like it will be pretty predictable, but in the same sense that Avatar was a time-worn story done extremely well, I feel Epic will follow in similar footsteps.

It's really imaginative so far... and kind of goes in-line with my random daydreams when I'm eating at restaurants and stuff, where I imagine miniature animals battling in the rafters or in the kitchen afterhours!

I only watched 20 minutes last night is because today was supposed to be my first day of class, and it was starting at 9:30 am... but I slept through my alarm, and now I kind of wish I went through the entirety of Epic last night

I missed this in theaters but got it from 3D Blu Ray Rentals. I found myself fast forwarding through a bit of this that plodded a long then I got interrupted by my brother in-law who is re-doing our bathroom. Afterwards I didn't have any desire to even finish the movie and I just put it in the mailer and mailed it.

The story plods along and is kinda boring. The 3D is weak and the the picture is soft more than it is sharp. I hate weak 3D like this plus for me the out of focus backgrounds further weakened the 3D. Yawn, I'm sleepy just thinking about it and I feel like I'm going do fall asleepppppppppppppppppppp

May be we are in minority but I thought this is one of best movies I watched offlate both story wise, amazing detail and picture quality and DREAMWORKS rivaling 3D. This is orders of magnitude better than any crap Pixar is putting out offlate!

I finally saw this and liked it more than I thought I would. I never saw Arthur and the Invisibles which seems to be what people are saying its more derivative of so maybe that helped me enjoy it more. I think the bigger issue is that we have been flooded with so many animated movies that its hard for them to really stand out or break new ground anymore. Despicable Me 2 and Monsters U are sequels. Turbo and Planes looked like retreads of Cars. The genre needs new ideas.

In any event, I though that it delivered visually, with solid 3D making the forest look great and the flight sequences were especially nice. The colors were vibrant on my screen, not washed out as others complained (I have passive 3D in case that is a factor). The story was pretty predicable, but I think that of most animated movies because they are targeting young viewers that can only follow a certain amount of story complexity.

Nit picks:
I didn't care for the blocky look of the humanoid characters' faces. It made the movie feel dated, like I was looking at early 3D game characters or something.

The slug and snail are supposed to be comic relief, but I didn't think their jokes were very funny. Maybe kids like them more?

Biggest flaws:
The sudden, out of nowhere Steven Tyler song was a huge WTF moment. This isn't a musical and this was a total immersion killer.

Beyonce was a terrible casting choice. Her voice has a deep, sultry quality that IMHO gave her flirtations with Colin Farrell a child-audience inappropriate sexual edge. I equally blame the writers for giving her overly suggestive lines.

Just picked this up second hand. Blind buy of course, looks like it could be a bit of a mixed bag based on some of the above opinions.

Just rented it at the library (insert obligatory "Okay, the 3D's kinda good") and let's be honest:
You can dress 'em up with all the pretty William Joyce art direction you want in the hopes that Rise of the Guardians will come out, but in the end, the new Fox BlueSky without Chris Meledandri (who's since off at Universal making jabbering little yellow aspirin) is now slavishly copying old-school "bad" pre-Dragons Dreamworks, and not very well:
Loser heroes, Seth Rogen-clone slacker comedy reliefs (could the slug character be any more like B.O.B. from Monsters vs. Aliens?), and condescendingly put-upon heroines who are, uh...politely....dealing...with the idiots around them?

Someone should really help the studio to put Rio behind them and move into the '10's.
Usually, at this point, I'd say, "It's like when we first found out the characters talked in Disney's 'Dinosaur'", but it really goes far worse than that.

Hmmmm have to say "Epic" wasnt overly.....I found the characters a little clunky - reminded me very much of the eskimo's from the original Ice Age! (time to update the animation guys)

Some of the voice acting seemed forced and un-natural (as a side note I actually thought the Steven Tyler brought his character to life the best overall - spoken as an Aerosmith fan ) I kinda enjoyed the tune he belted out - but as you guys said it was a bit misplaced overall - maybe Epic would have been better as a semi-musical Beyonce could have pitched in with a song I'm sure!

I think overall the issue or flatness with Epic is maybe that it was trying to be TOO serious and didnt give us the usual comedic moments we have come to expect with an animated title (from memory i think the funniest moment was the fruit fly and it's lifespan gag) - I will be interested to see how Disney's Frozen washes up too...it kinda looks to be the same in this sense.

Strangely though EPIC is one of those movies that has me sitting on the fence - ya know one of those titles you dont want to like, but like it anyway, but still hate it at the same time...maybe a second viewing is in order....

I rented this one in 2D from RedBox. I'd have to say the story was cute, but as some of you said already, mimicked some other movies in various ways. However, I think I'm gonna leap and go ahead and buy this one in 3D for us here. It still had me giggling, since I'm still a kid at heart. My favs were the slugs though, sarcastic and funny.

finally bout to watch this one now..

The visuals and 3D look really impressive to me. Really good depth so far and not a hint of ghosting.

I seem to like the look of this one alot!

There is lots of depth but generally it is just kind of there. There are some shoots which miniaturize the characters (when seen from a more human like perspective) but for the most part whilst their is plenty of 3d it is more or less just there which is a hugely missed opportunity given the different size of characters present (some of the best use is when the 'ferries' have the dog chase them as it really emphasizes the difference in size). The film itself isn't anything to write home about either with some truly phoned in performances.
