So I guess Disney is solidifying Cinderella's dress IS unequivocally blue with this movie, as opposed to that midpoint color between silver and blue they deemed passable on all further transfers of the classic. I just feel a silver dress would match the glass slippers better. Looks like they passed the rejected silver dress idea on to Fairy Godmother instead.

Things I noticed:
  • Little girls running through fields of grass is now a requirement for all future live-action remakes of Disney princess films. (i.e. Maleficent) Isn't that more of a trait of Belle's (I want adventure in the great wide somewhere!...) How ever will they pull that off in Little Mermaid's remake?
  • Cheesy dialogue that would've sounded cringe-worthy had less distinguished actors said them
  • Cinderella and Prince Charming have switched eyeballs (Cinderella's are now dark; Charming's crystal blue)
  • The King of the North has been demoted to Prince Charming.
  • Daisy of "Downtown Abbey" has been upgraded from a scullery maid (ironic twist) to a Lady and eligible maiden.
  • Agent Carter dies again, but the twist here is she's not just dying in a Disney-affiliated film.
  • Helena channels Glinda the Good in her Fairy Godmother role. I honestly predicted they'd make her a haggy Fairy Godmother (as she was shown in her first form) which I was afraid of. Nope, instead POOF she changed into a lovely version of herself that I never get to see in her Burton roles. I'm a fan of the look, because it's so unlike her prior roles and her character is so atypical and bubbly (as the Godmother has always been). Definitely lovable and I approve making the Godmother younger. Now I honestly think she could play ANY part. (Originally I thought she'd make a better Wicked Stepmother).
  • Wicked Stepmother wearing animal prints and a 40's 'do? Uhh...

This looks as shitty as you'd expect but it can't possibly be worse than Maleficent so good job Disney, you're slowly on your way back up by default.

I enjoyed Maleficent tremendously. It was a sweet little fantasy flick with some endearing character work by Jolie and Sam Riley playing her raven Diaval. Elle Fanning was radiant as ever. I actually want to see this Cinderella. Ken Branagh is directing, so it should at least be reasonably diverting at the worst. I'm hoping it may be more for me. But I'm a Disney fan anyway so I'm pretty much pre-primed to like it.

I wonder if the story will be changed around like Malificent. The Prince will be looking for the other glass slipper, not to find Cinderella, but to complete his shoe collection fetish.

As the biggest fan of Sleeping Beauty ever, Maleficent's mere existence is like a swift kick in the balls. It's a betrayal of the 1959 classic's legacy and a colossal misunderstanding of what made the character great. Sorry but there is no way I can agree with you or the people who thanked your post.

I was so ready to thank your post the moment I finished reading your first sentence. Yes to this! 1000x yes to this! Definitely how I felt after leaving the theater. But everyone I ever spoke to could not understand my negative feeling about this movie (a consequence of my loyalty to the original). They told me the same thing the movie was marketed as, "but they tell you from the beginning, it's not the same story, it's the true story," as if that was justification to muck up a perfectly good villainess, "the self-proclaimed f***ing mistress of all evil!" I get a little sick at the mere fact that more people have likely seen the movie "Maleficent" as opposed to the 1959 classic it is based on and that they consider this the "better movie" and will never watch the original.

I'm also a big fan of "Sleeping Beauty." It was the only classic Disney princess* movie we owned (therefore Aurora ranks higher to me than Snow White and Cinderella) and I watched it numerous times on VHS and I know the lines by heart.

The only good thing that came out of that movie was Lana Del Rey's remake of "Once Upon a Dream."

*classic meaning not Ariel or Belle or the later princesses

Haha, love it. And then the Prince fights fervently to overturn the law against gay marriage in his kingdom, marries the man he truly loves, and rides off into the sunset in his white carriage, wearing the glass slippers proudly. All the while, Cinderella, watches, dressed in rags, moping. All she was to him was a beard to satiate his homophobic daddy's wishes who only hosted the ball hoping to heal his son and get him popping out some royal grandbabies. Just the kind of shock value Disney needs for the required modern twist for this remake that includes a timely social commentary. Lol.

I mean how can you have not guessed all that underlying background from this. The Prince yawns at the repulsive girls while glaring disdainfully at his father under his freshly shaped eyebrows for forcing him to choose a mate from the herd. The Prince is a character just dripping with complexity.

Honestly, what straight man has skin that smooth, teeth that perfect, hair that well-groomed, and lips that tender? #nohomo

Okay? That's cool dude, no need to sound so upset. I look at Maleficent as not even really being tied to the original classic, which I do happen to love myself and own 3 copies of (the SE DVD, the Platinum Blu, and the Diamond. How's that for loving something?), but as an alternate universe sort of thing. Maleficent tells a very different story of its own without even trying to fit into the context of Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty. It is a whole new take that, in my mind anyway, doesn't negate the original or make it any less a worthy classic. It stands on its own two feet. You may as well say the same about the two different Snow White movies released two years ago. I'm truly sorry if that very thought offends you because it is not like I'm going out of my way to piss people off on here. That just seems to happen anyway, regardless of what I say or do. And I am so not aiming for your balls dude. Not very sportsmanlike. Let me clarify further. I STILL LOVE SLEEPING BEAUTY! And think that Maleficent is still one of the best villains in Disney's arsenal. She was also dryly funny thanks to Eleanor Audley. But I can also embrace and love Jolie's and co's take on the character by itself. Forgive me, but I'm a bit of a sucker when it comes to redemption stories. There are a lot of other movies out there whose existences I'm not too fond of, but I find it very easy to ignore them. Live and let live I say. It's fine that you hate Maleficent and other films so just don't watch them. I'm totally okay with you not liking Maleficent. That is fine. I do. And neither of us is ever going to be able to sway the other, so let us recognize a futile war and shake hands and call it a draw on good terms, as should all people with varying opinions when it comes to this. What say you?

Was not impressed with the trailer at all. There's no twist to the tale, and the trailer showed the whole movie.

LOL!! Your version of Cinderella would literally be better than Disney's, which is just translating the animated version into live action and looks profoundly boring as a result. No way would Disney, an incredibly conservative and risk-averse institution, ever touch that subject though.

I'm not angry with you at all, only the movie and everyone involved in it. Why bother to make a movie about Maleficent if she bares no resemblance in terms of characterization to the version that everyone loved enough for a movie to be made featuring the character? It's like, "Here is a character everyone loves, let's make a movie about her but change everything about this character!" That makes no sense to me whatsoever.

(I am annoyed you removed the Spider-Man quote from your signature, though.)

Sorry about that. I'll put it back. I didn't know anyone would miss it. I thought my sig was getting a bit cluttered with three lines in it, all from different movies. Well, the last one is a piece of a poem featured in The Wind Rises, one of my favorite films this year. I don't see how you could be angry at the people who made it, but hey I'm not gonna press wounds. I love it, you don't. What more needs be said than agree to live and let live. Glad to hand shake with you. Virtually. Too bad they don't have a handshake emoticon.

lol you don't have to put it back just because I liked that quote. You do what you wanna do.

What do you think about my confusion as to why they would make a movie about Maleficent in the first place only to change everything about her character?

I got nothing dude. I just see it as a new take. And as mentioned, I like redemption stories. You're right. It isn't the same character from the 1959 classic, but for some odd reason I can embrace both. Two different interpretations. I get mad about things like the new Fantastic 4. That makes me a bit upset, but again if it does turn out as bad as it sounds I'm happy to remain blissfully ignorant by not watching it. Hollywood does things like this all the time. If I were to make a live action Sleeping Beauty I would keep Maleficent as a villain straight up, but look at the fact that the movie is titled Maleficent and is rated PG and aimed primarily at family audiences who wouldn't exactly be cool with watching a movie told from a purely villainess perspective. If they wanted to keep her a villain for this they should have just done a straight up Sleeping Beauty retelling and not made her the sole focus and her name the title. In a way, you could say that they shot themselves in the foot with that. Oh well, as it stands I enjoyed it for what it offered me which was a 90 minute slice of fantasy that was much better told than it maybe had any right to be.

Haha, thanks! Perhaps one day they might. I recall them producing an "It Gets Better" video years ago featuring some of their gay employees and they host Gay Days at Disney Park so the aren't anti-gay in that respect. I also believe Andreas Deja, a distinct Disney animator known for his character designs for Scar, Jafar, Gaston, Adult Hercules, Lilo, and King Triton and who is openly gay, expressed interest on the subject for a Disney feature (decades from now when it would be more acceptable). And then there was that controversial moment from the Disney channel where they introduced lesbian moms on that Disney Channel show "Good Luck Charlie." So I wouldn't say Disney is as uptight-conservative as they appear, but they certainly want to defend their title as the most wholesome, family-friendly studio in Hollywood.

I can't get over they beauty of the music for this trailer though. It's simple, but so emotional. Gives me the feels I got from Lana Del Rey's "Once Upon a Dream" all over again:

Now they just need to get an incredible singer to cover "So This Is Love," the best song from the movie imo.
