I'm not really at all surprised. The foundation for Sony's lofty franchise aspirations pretty much crumbled right before their eyes.
Not only that, they threw so much money at this one, we're still uncertain if they're yet to break even.

The fact that the production budget is still being kept under wraps at least suggests it's over the 200 million mark.

If Pirates of the Caribbean 3 cost $300 million back in 2007, today's blockbusters are routinely in the $300 to $400 range.

They shouldn't be doubling down on the tentpole strategy. 21/22 Jump Street combined cost much less than just one Spider-Man but are far more profitable.

Even though I liked the second Amazing Spider-Man film, it had a lot of issues, many of them stemming from the fact that they threw out too much at once. Sony got greedy and wanted some of that Avengers money, so instead of setting up an interesting story to revolve around Electro, they felt the need to turn the movie into a set up for the Sinister Six.

It's a real shame as the reboot gave them a chance to repair all the mistakes they made in Raimi's trilogy, and in my opinion they set everything up nicely with material for the sequels. Harry should have been introduced in the second film, but not rushed into the Goblin so early. Rhino was completely unnecessary.

Hopefully they smarten up, kill off that Sinister Six movie and focus on making a really good third film. I would hold off the Sinister Six until the 6th film, instead giving the team members a chance to introduce and develop themselves as interesting villains. Throwing 4 new villains at us along with Goblin and Rhino who barely had any character development themselves will just be too much. Hopefully they have learnt that more ins't necessary better, although they didn't learnt that after Raimi's third film so I'm guessing they're just not very bright over there.

This is why if they were smart the third movie wouldn't have the new girl and Peter get together. They can interact some but no full blown romance / dating.

Gwen was too important to just move on like that from.

Webb needs to go, Garfield needs a haircut and screenwriters need to brought in that know a little something about structure.

As crazy as this would be considered, I would have loved to see how raimi would have handled the lizard

I love Garfield but he's getting too old to play a teen. I think it would be neat to have a timeskip of a few years before the third one, during which the Sinister Six is established, avoiding contrived development within the movies which they've showcased thus far.

That's probably the best move they could make at this point.

Agreed. I mean, I liked the second movie well enough, but even I rolled my eyes at
[Show spoiler]Oscorp just happening to build all the outfits for the Sinister Six.

I disagree. The reboot, while it may have had its issues, did at least set the stage for a kickass second movie that could've been a much bigger hit, but Sony dropped the ball big-time by thinking expanded Spidey universe instead of just making the best sequel they could. If TASM2 had been more like Raimi's Spider-Man 2 instead of his Spider-Man 3, it wouldn't be struggling to clear 200 mil domestically.

TASM2 is failing because it was a mediocre film, not because of Spider-Man fatigue. The problem now is there probably will be fatigue whenever that third movie does hit theaters thanks to how big of a letdown this last one was.

They've just started so they would be 17-18, but Garfield looks like he's about to finish undergrad. To me the youngest Garfield could pull off right now is early 20's, and considering he'd be ~2 years older by the time TASM3 is released, I think a timeskip to graduation or grad school could work.

I think if they did a possible two year time skip, that would be pretty good in my opinion.
