I guess I didn't realize Body Double sold out that quickly. I didn't really pay attention to that release since I pre-ordered it the day it went up and didn't look back. A month or two is probably more reasonable. I guess it depends how many Peckinpah fans are lurking out there.

Did anyone listen to the commentary on the MGM dvd? Is it just my memory, or did they seem preaty down on the movie..like this was not very good. I'd say it's one of Peckinpah's best.

All I said is that due to the fact the TT hadn't announced details of their release, it wasn't possible to say that the euro release is the easy choice. Now that TT have announced extras...

Also, Redman is a fan of Peckinpah. That should tell you something.

One should wait for details before saying for sure that one release will be better than another.

This isn't a playground where kids scream "I don't care" and throw up some meaningless emoticon, to get their non existent point across.

Anyway, I'm happy that this will be a nice extras laden edition, and I'll pre-order as soon as it's live.

Isn't that the same commentary being offered on this? The Seydor, Simmons, Redman etc. one?

I would tend to agree it's up there amongst his best, though I have to be in the right mood to watch it. It's sad that Peckipah said this is the only movie he made where he had full control without the studio interfering and/or hacking it up.

My most wanted Peckinpah on blu would be Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid, with all three cuts!

Wall of text !?? Don't read much do you?

So you won't even take the time to read or listen to reason, and I'm glad you have no problem with posting mis-information. I'll just ignore you when you post something, because obviously we can't be sure if it's true or not, and even worse, you "don't care." How mature.

I might be wrong but I dont think they were striking too many high-def masters back in '05. If you want to know what youre getting picture wise, read this review:

The review says it's likely from a dated source, so it very well could be using the same master used to make the 2005 DVD. The review wasn't really glowing, saying there's room for "substantial improvement", and concludes that the PQ is "decent"

I have the Italian Import, but if they include this extra, I'd buy it just because...

It does NOT conclude that the PQ is "decent". Read.

"Despite the fact that the high-definition transfer has been struck from a dated source, THE FILM LOOKS QUITE GOOD. Detail and especially depth (during the desert sequences) are MUCH IMPROVED. Generally speaking, colors are also stable and richer than those from the out of print R1 DVD release of the film. The best news, however, is that attempts to re-polish the film and make it look 'cleaner' and 'sharper' have not been made. In other words, there are no traces of heavy degraining and edge-enhancement, and this really is what makes this release worth owning. This is not to imply that there is no room for substantial improvements, but even though the high-definition transfer isn't from a new scan, the film definitely looks like a film of its age should. This said, light noise, some minor contrast fluctuations, very light edge flicker, and some flecks are occasionally noticeable here and there. However, though aged, the basics are certainly in decent condition."

He concludes the PQ section saying the basics of the film are in decent condition. So he doesn't explicitly say the picture as a whole is just decent, but the 3.5 score, and all the other issues mentioned (dated master, noise, contrast fluctuations, edge flickering , and other print damage) would qualify it as being just "decent" to me. Not bad, not great, just decent. If you feel differently, that's wonderful for you. Pro-B himself stated earlier in the thread that he considers it a very fine release.

If this is the same master that was used for the dvd, I think I may just stick with the dvd. Probably more stuff from TT coming that I'd like to own that I don't already have, or that may possibly use a new master (like Body Double which I already had the 2006 special edition, but once word leaked about how good the new master TT was getting, I had to get it).

I really hope that TT gets a newer master for Wild at Heart too. If not, that's probably another one that I may just stick with the 2004 dvd.

Hope the whole Titus situation isn't a preview of things to come.

I'll look for the link But TT stated that most (or all) of MGMs transfers are older masters probably made for HD broadcast. Or the least made in the last 5 or so years.

Yeah, I'd like to read about that. If MGM isn't providing newer masters then I'll make buying decisions on a case by case basis. No impulse buying for the MGM stuff. I bought Thunderbolt and Lightfoot because I like Clint Eastwood movies and I hadn't seen it yet but I didn't think the PQ was that great.

If this is the case, these titles should be cheaper.
I know how the whole deal works, but if they (TT) know they are getting an inferior master, they should either not deal with that title, or offer it at a discount to titles that Sony gives em fresh new 2-4K masters for. Only seems fair. So glad this site is here to guide my decisions.

Hopefully they are at least "good", even if out-dated masters. FOX tends to give them "old" masters, with mixed results. A few really poor ones they probably shouldn't have done on blu-ray - but the majority from FOX are still more than adequate for blu-ray - and they don't adjust prices accordingly.

That being said, if they aren't careful that could damage the reputation that Sony has basically given them by handing over so many nice masters to work with.

BTW - this film is on Comcast On-Demand in the FREE movies section - in HD.

It wouldn't be surprising if that is the same master they would use, it didn't look completely terrible - but of course it's tough to judge based on streaming an On-Demand title. At best it would probably result in a mediocre 3/5 blu-ray.

There were definitely some anomalies as far as compression and weird (digital) artifacts. I just don't know if those were due to the cable stream, or from the source. I think this is an example that seeing the free version is "good enough", and I probably don't need to pay $30 for the same thing.
