Started off the challenge a little late, but here's film number 1! Kicked off the challenge with some good old-fashioned horror

Oo, excellent thread! There's so much out there that I need to watch, so a challenge like this might just give me the will to really destroy my massive watch list! Starting out with the 50 films challenge, and then we'll see where it goes from there.

Switched out Comedy and Erotic thrillers, and replaced them with "Movies Never Seen Before" (this one will be easy to fill) and "Movies with Actors Who've Never Won an Oscar for Acting".

--

1. Drama
2. Horror
3. Movies Never Seen Before
4. Underrated/Lesser-Known movies you would highly recommend to fellow forum members
5. Movies with Actors Who've Never Won an Oscar for Acting
6. Action/Adventure
  • The Last Boy Scout [POSTER] (1991; starring Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans; written by Shane Black; directed by Tony Scott)
  • >> The Last Boy Scout is, thanks to Shane Blacks great writing and Tony Scotts excellent direction, one of the finest pieces in the action genre; sporting intense action sequences mixed with copious amounts of absolutely hilarious dialog. A must-see for all action aficionados.
7. Five Movies from the Year You Were Born (1990)
8. Sci-Fi
9. Martial Arts
  • Project A [POSTER] (1983; starring Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao; written by Jackie Chan; directed by Jackie Chan)
  • >> Classic Jackie Chan flick with some amazing stunts and fights; especially the Clock Tower fall is just insane. Also have some of the classic Jackie Chan humor inspired by old silent movies; very enjoyable! Unfortunately the dubbing available on Netflix is horrible, and it felt like it was cut at some places; wish I could get a hold of the original audio with subtitles..
10. Misc. (Any 5 movies)
  • Beavis and Butt-head Do America [POSTER] (1996; starring Mike Judge; written by Mike Judge and Joe Stillman; directed by Mike Judge)
  • >> I haven't seen much of the Beavis and Butt-head TV-show, only a few clips on youtube, and I never really bothered watching it because I felt it just wasn't my kind of humor. While browsing Netflix I found their feature film and figured “hey, why not? Let's give this a shot.” In conclusion I can say that, as I suspected, this isn't my kind of humor, but there were some funny jokes in there, and the soundtrack kicked ass! I can definitely see the appeal and understand why it has such a cult following.

I know it's very early, but I was just trying to plan ahead :

How are we planning to handle October? Are we just doing a standard challenge like this month, or are we doing an entirely Halloween/scary/horror-themed challenge? I just ask because if we're doing like 10 horror subgenres (zombie, ghost story, home invasion, etc...) I'll probably need to start planning/gathering titles now, it may also affect which horror or scifi movies I watch THIS month, as there's some I'll hold off on for October.

I am pretty sure that October is going to consist mainly of horror films. I can't wait for a Michael Myers category, Freddy Kruger category and Jason Voorhees category, ideas for some specific categories for October.

I agree. I have a few HORROR films on hold at the library, and have like 17 in my NEED TO WATCH PILE, but I really didn't want to watch any this month.

Maybe it will just be a simple 50 Horror Films For October.

Hey, if I win this challenge, that is what it will be okay!

I think 50 horror is good. Not sure I have 10 categories worth of stuff.

Checked my collection; I could get 10!
Zombies
The Occult, Possession and Hauntings
Slasher
Monster
Vampire Action: Blade, Underworld
Natural Horror
Cult Classics
Horror Comedy
Thriller
Sci-Fi Horror

you could also just use a couple category slots for your favorite series (5 Halloween movies, 5 Elm Street, Jason, Final Destination, Saw.... etc). I'll be using one category for Family-Friendly Halloween so my kids can get in on it.

Yep, favorite series slot is good. 5 Stephen King flicks too. I like the idea of having a miscellaneous category every month.

Now, I'm leaning towards October being 50 horror with 10 categories.

The Five-Year Engagement: Good, albeit cliched. It started out like it was going to be more creative than the typical RomCom, but it hit a decline and I was on the verge of hating it, but it picked up towards the end. The acting, for the most part, was good. As was the comedy, there weren't any jokes that really failed miserably. Overall, it was a typical RomCom, but was still good, if you're a fan of Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, or don't mind a cliched RomCom, I suggest checking it out.

Monster Squad would be a very good choice here. Maybe Hocus Pocus, Frankenweenie, Nightmare Before Christmas???

If we are doing Categories, I'll leave my Elm Street set to the side for now. But I will have to find a bunch to order through the library.....in my 75 waiting to be ordered que, I have Exorcist 3, Dead Zone, Night Of The Living Dead and Graveyard Shift...all from 1990(Dead Zone isnt but on the same disc as GS).

So I will have to find some more and get them ordered.

God knows only ONE darn horror movie is being released in theaters to help us out: the Carrie remake. Stephen King Category!!!!

Hotel Transylvania, Ghostbusters, Monster House, Casper, Scooby Doo, Corpse Bride, Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Coraline, Haunted Mansion, Fun Size, Addams Family, The Witches, Spooky Buddies, ... I'm sure there's lots more. (I'm certainly not saying they're all good, just that they qualify )
I think an argument could be made for ET. Not a horror movie but takes place at Halloween.

Anyway, didn't mean to derail the September thread. Just looking ahead. I think maybe we just make it 50 flicks, and if people want to do categories, they can. We now return you to your regularly scheduled challenge...

Dan In Real Life: Ok, but not good. It was an average, if not below average Romantic Dramedy. The acting was good at best, with Steve Carrell being the only real stand out performance (not counting Emily Blunt) and it wasn't amazing, just better than the rest. Emily Blunt, while she was the best thing of the movie, was thrown in and had no true purpose. The same can be said about a good majority of the film, things were thrown in for the sole purpose of moving the story along even when they didn't fit. Overall, not a movie I see myself ever watching again, and cannot recommend it to anyone that hasn't seen it, especially as a buy. I got it from the local library and that is about the extent I would recommend going to see the film.

The East: Ok, but extremely disappointing. I was really interested in the movie and the idea behind the script, it had the potential to be amazing. Ultimately though, it was 2 long hours of wasted potential. I was bored almost the entire way through, and found myself not caring about the characters at all. At one point, they tried to make you feel bad for Ellen Page's character, but up until that point her character had been completely unlikable and hostile. I will say that the acting was good though. Overall, the movie was extremely disappointing, but it is worth a watch if you find it cheap, can rent it cheap, or it is on TV one day.
