Forgive me for mentioning this on a physical media forum, but the 1980 premiere version (complete with intermission card and sepia grading) is the one available to buy and rent in HD on iTunes and Amazon Prime.
What foreign language dialogue is supposed to be subtitled? I don’t remember any in the digital release mentioned above nor on the Capelight Blu-ray. |

Then it's not the premiere version, which ends with a freezeframe of Averill in the cabin door. The BFI has one of those two 70mm prints and aside from the ending there were some minor tweaks and re-edits and one scene (in the empty bar with the juggler practising outside the window) was moved slightly to a different part of the film that wee made when the video master for TV (possibly its bow on the Z Channel) and the 'uncut' VHS release were made.
The ending for the short version is particularly odd - basically the same minus his wife and with a change of wardrobe, you wonder why they bothered shooting two versions. Last edited by Aclea; 03-21-2021 at 09:49 AM. |

I stand corrected! Not sure what version it is then but it does have the intermission and sepia grading.
Some sources online say the 70mm version with freezeframe and subtitles was released on VHS and possibly laserdisc - does anyone know which edition(s)? |

I've heard that too, but the NTSC double tape set I had was the deck of the yacht ending. It's always bugged me because the freezeframe is strikingly impressive, trapping him indecisively and impotently in the doorway after he spent so much of the movie indecisively failing to really act until it was too late. It's a shame they didn't at least include the two alternate endings as extras on the Criterion disc.
![]() Even though they didn't have the freezeframe ending (which I've only seen, albeit several times, on the BFI's 70mm print) the initial TV screenings kept the intermission - even BBC2's premiere had a five minute break between halves (I think there wasa news bulletin inbetween). But then it wasn't uncommon for circa four hour films like Lawrence of Arabia to be spread over two nights of primetime on TV on both sides of the Atlantic into the 80s.
