Thought this might be helpful to new collectors as well as myself.
Since I am still somewhat new to collecting blus and such, I find myself coming across some unfamiliar terms when used to describe the texture, material and effects to slipcovers. In some cases, I even find myself googling the definition of some of these terms. 1/4 - Quarter Slips - Not all slips are the same size. Some of them, most often seen in foreign (Non-US) Steelbooks are just a fraction of the size of normal slips. -If you look closely, you can see the difference of the Steelbook and the 1/4 Slip at the bottom in the KimchiDVD release of Frozen 3D. - -Miss March was also released with a similar little slip - Audible - Slips that have senors or buttons that play music or speak when triggered. -The most recent example of this is the Target Exclusive for Anchorman 2 - Cutaway - When a slip has an open portion on the face, revealing the case or other artwork underneath. -Here's the Blufans release of Oz the Great and Powerful, with a cutaway that could frame one of several art card inserts inside. - -Also seen in the Best Buy Exclusive of Alice in Wonderland. - Debossed - When images or writing are indented or pressed. -This Wanted slipcover is a good example of what debossed items look like. You can really see the indentations of the writing. - Embossed - When images or writing are raised. -A perfect example of this is the UK release of Jennifer's Body. - G1 - G1 is refereed to the size of the case. G1's are the standard size of DVD cases. They are taller than the standard Blu-Ray styled cases (G2). Gatefold - When a slip has a "flap" on the front (sometimes affixed with Velcro), which can open up like a book cover to reveal additional artwork or disc details inside. -Best seen in the Universal 100th Anv. Slipcovers. - Glitter - Slips with glitter which gives them a sandy and grainy type of feeling. -How the Grinch Stole Christmas - Holofoil - Very shiny and reflective to light. -This titles shows a lot of the Holofoil effect. - Lenticular - Plastic cards to give it that 3D effect. Picture will move/change when the slip is moved back and forth. -The 'Science' behind Lenticular cards - -There are some, such as Hunger Games / Catching Fire Wal-Mart Exclusive, that actually change the whole image. - -Also seen on the new Paranormal Activity: Marked Ones Lenticular Slipcover. - -There are some that only make the images slightly move, such as Gravity 3D Lenticular Slipcover. - Matte - Dull or flat, without shine. Almost like a velvet type feeling. -This can be seen in titles like Rise of the Planet of the Apes. - Metal - Rather than the standard slip, these are made out of metal. -I have a feeling these are very hard to come by, but very cool indeed. Check out this Australian release of Gladiator - Pop-up - Slips that open up and have images pop out. -CA - Hobo with a Shotgun - -CA - Piranha - Slipboxes - Often used in sets and series. Larger and thicker than regular slipcovers. Covers 5 sides of the case, rather than 4. -For example, Game of Thrones - Starburst / Sunburst - This effect is when slips have beams or rays of light like patterns that start from a central point and spread throughout the slip. -This effect is truly something amazing looking. Check it out in this copy of The Avengers 3D - -Also seen in this release of Cloud Atlas - -To see what this effect looks like in motion, check out this short video - Transparent - Clear or see-through slips that show all or most of the cover art. -Here's a perfect example of this type of Slipcover - -Another example of this is the Hairspray Slip. The top half of it is Transparent and you are able to see right through it. - *Depending on the manufacturers and company, Slipcovers can also be referred to as O-Rings / O-Sleeves & Dust Jackets. If any of our expert members would like to help out in this thread, please feel free to post and I will update accordingly. Special Thanks to (in no particular order): [Show spoiler]
