PCM 2.0 is the audio. "Adventures" and "Return" have 3 discs each, while "Casebook" and "Feature Films" have 2 discs each. No more than four episodes on a disc (and all are dual-layered). I don't have any of the overseas' releases, so I can't compare. Image seems a little soft at times, but that seems to be result of the source, not the transfer.

I picked these up from Costco today.
I am no technical expert, but I do have the complete DVD set as well as the Spanish BluRay set as reference. I haven't had time to watch much. But I put in The Sign Of Four and Hound Of The Baskervilles for a quick comparison. I have to say, the Spanish release looks MUCH better to my eyes. I know there were concerns about the level of noise reduction and sharpening in the Spanish release, but watching the new US release, I can see why they did it. The level of noise and grain (for example, in the beginning of the ep when Mary Morstan consults Holmes) is distractingly high. In this scene, Holmes brushes dust from his pants - I couldn't even SEE the dust through all of the noise and grain in the US bluray release. Hound wasn't nearly as bad. Definitely noticeably darker in the places where the Hound was lurking. The final dog attack where Henry is struggling with the dog was much darker than the Spanish version. Not nearly as clear and detailed. Again, a matter of personal preference, I suppose. But I prefer the Spanish here too. To each his own, but I will take the waxy faces over the noise and grain here. I wish I had a way to post screenshots. I hope someone will do an in-depth comparison. But for the moment, I am planning NOT to open the remaining sets. I think I will likely return them and stick with my Spanish Blues. Last edited by ShirleyFilms; 07-03-2014 at 08:46 AM. |

HELL YES!
![]() I've been waiting for this to hit Blu-ray disc far more compared to Agatha Christie's POIROT with David Suchet! Jeremy Brett is the definitive Sherlock Holmes to me, more than Robert Downey Jr., Basil Rathbone, Benedict Bumberbatch, and Peter Cushing combined. Glad I waited for a domestic release, they're shot on film so there's an exception for my "importing from the source country with no exceptions" rule. Didn't want to buy it from Japan or Spain. This is one of my all time favorite British TV shows from Granada! Also, that bloke in the intro credits will NEVER be able to buy that newspaper. ![]() Just wish Brett wasn't in failing health though and completed all of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's SHERLOCK HOLMES stories. I'm just grinning ear-to-ear about this! ![]() Last edited by Ray_Rogers; 07-03-2014 at 10:08 PM. |

If so, it looks very similar (in the brightness) to the Spanish release. Though, I would still contend the Spanish looks better. I never found those shots/transitions that jarring. That chase scene (in my view) starts at dusk and continues into the night - the night portion beginning when the copper turns on the searchlight. I actually just watched the DVD version of that scene again for reference, and it seems the same to me, overall. But since the quality of the DVD is so low/colorless, it just seems to transition from dusk to night a bit smoother. But I think the elements are the same. Hope this helps. The more of it I watch, the more unimpressed I am with the US release. It's not horrible, as blu-rays of 80s TV shows go - it's definitely better than the DVDs. But I would love to hear others weigh in with more technical reviews. Last edited by ShirleyFilms; 07-03-2014 at 11:55 PM. |

Just watched Master Blackmailer. Strange audio thing happening in this one. Evident from the very first shot. When the birds fly up, there is an annoying "modulation" or something, happening to the audio. Almost a ghost echo. Sounds really bad. That quality is present throughout the movie, tho is only occasionally distracting.

It was $160 before. This is for 40 hours of content mind you, I don't think the price is that bad at all, especially if you've been in the market for the DVD set years back. If you want the series., but can't spend the money, then get the Spain version which is much cheaper
