Eva TV on Blu-ray is definitely not going to happen until the 4th Rebuild movie is done, that's for certain. Fortunately the Renewal/Platinum DVDs aren't too bad.

Aren't too bad?

The Renewal/Platinum DVD collection is great and I've got nothing against because over at anime communities we're more used to it on DVD than BD because companies tend to mess it up or it's not as good as it should've been.

However, when they properly remaster anime series in HD for a Blu-ray release then it's worth upgrading.

Series like Elfen Lied, Ergo Proxy and Soul Eater I have no reason to get the Blu-ray version because the DVD looks gorgeous upscaled in 1080p.

Director Hideaki Anno discussed the possible timeframe for Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, the fourth film in his four-part remake of Gainax's Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series, at a discussion event at Tokyo's TOHO Cinemas Nihonbashi on Monday. He said, "I'll get to it. I kept you waiting, but since Evangelion: 1.0 came out in 2007, 2.0 in 2009, and 3.0 in 2012, there's been two to three years between films. Wouldn't it be nice if the next one comes four years — no, six years [after 3.0]. (laughs) No, I'll do my best."

Variety reported on Anno's comments on Evangelion at the Tokyo International Film Festival a day earlier: "I am definitely doing it, but I have to do this sort of thing [such as Animator Expo] as well. I'm thinking that I'll return to Evangelion after I do something different."

At the talkshow event in Tokyo on Monday, Anno also talked about his relationship with Hayao Miyazaki, and how Miyazaki talked to him in times of need. Anno mentioned that after the Evangelion television series was finished, "I was frazzled, but in reality I was close to death." He added that at that time many people helped him, but the one who really saved him was Miyazaki.

Anno said that Miyazaki called him after the Evangelion television series ended after hearing a rumor that Anno was in danger. At that time Miyazaki told Anno, "I've felt the same way. It's OK to rest. Until you are able to create something again, it's OK to rest as much as you want. Because if it's you ... both people and money will gather." Anno said that Miyazaki's words really put him at ease.

More recently, Miyazaki told Anno that it was OK if he quit, but immediately afterward said, "No, it's best if you do it. Because you said you'd try your hardest to the end, you will accomplish it." While talking about the fourth Evangelion film, Anno said while wiping away tears, "Even now, when I remember it, I cry. It's really painful to remember."

I'm in no hurry for 4.0 after seeing how utterly garbage 3.0 ended up being.

3.0 might make more sense and fit better into the series when all 4 are watched together?

I certainly hope so. Rebuild 1 and 2 shows Shinji to be less of a sniveling little brat and more of an actual leading character. The third one failed in that respect. He went back to be come a sniveling little brat again.

Yeah thats why I was enjoying the rebuild films, Shinji was alot more bearable. And now after a kinda dull movie he reverts back to his TV/EOE self.

I'm now very worried for 4.0, it has to be a masterpiece for it to salvage the series!

I'm guessing you haven't seen the Blu-ray release of Ergo-Proxy. The Geneon DVD release is really good quality, but the Blu-Ray is what you can rightfully call GORGEOUS! There is a very noticeable difference in quality between the two; not a very minimal difference between the DVD and Blu-ray releases like you would find on say Appleseed/Appleseed: Ex-Machina.

I've not seen the Evangelion TV series (only the first 3 rebuild movies), but would really like to see a Blu-ray release of the series.

Evangelion TV Series + Movies are finally getting a Blu-ray release in Japan. Hopefully we'll see a proper remastering.

Source. Also here.

My money is on Funi grabbing it, as well as doing some re-dubbing (hopefully for EoE at least).

A proper transfer of EoE....just hold on a little longer, self.

Would be nice if this set came with ENG subs but I'm not gonna hold my breathe on that one.

If only they would throw the subs and dub on those discs! It would be my Blu-ray of the Year 2015.

Exciting!

Any word yet on a distributor in Japan? What are the chances Aniplex will have it? For once I would actually prefer a direct release like the premium Gurren Lagann box (which this time around I would buy since it's Evangelion).

I just don't want an American distributor allowed the chance to screw something up.

These are my exact thoughts on this release, too. I would love if somehow by a turn of dark sorcery Aniplex did end up releasing it, although I would prefer a clamshell case (like the Kara no Kyoukai LE) to a huge slipcover (like Gurren Lagann). Then again they could just recycle the box type design and front art they used for the End of Evangelion JP LE LD. This video shows it off very nicely:

I love my copy of the Evangelion theatrical box set on LD! Probably the best $57 I ever spent...

C'mon, it's obvious that King Records / Starchild will be the distributor in Japan. They did the home video releases for the original Evangelion series/films with Gainax and the Rebuild movies with Khara...

I wonder if Funi will be handling the US release. After 3.33, Khara may go screw you, do a whole new improved, modern dub (Amanda Winn Lee's this scene could use a SPLAT EoE's dub comes to mind) and do it that way. Maybe follow Sailor Moon's example.

I was aware of King's history with the series but for whatever reason wasn't sure if that was still the case, and I haven't been paying much attention to the domestic Japanese releases of Rebuild.
