She barks, she purrs, she sings, she cries, she loves, she dies. It's a role that doesn't just have the kitchen sink thrown into it, it has the entire kitchen & she runs with it at a time where she hadn't yet shown herself to have so much range.

It's one giant, gaudy, intentional mess of a film, but she's the emotional center to all of the glitz & grotesqueries. I wish you'd give it another look and focus on just her performance.
Actually, Moulin Rouge is one of those rare movies I gave several chances. One of the reasons being exactly that, trying to find out why I had this growing feeling of dislike towards this extravaganza. Never had that before on that level. Nicole Kidman is an actress I respect for many great performances. And the stamp Baz Luhrmann puts on his movies, that's something to admire. No doubt.

Very well aware of the mess being intentional, I tried to embrace it. But the fact that it's intentional doesn't mean it works. At least not for me. This is Baz Luhrmann out of control, drowning in his own madness. And not in the good way. I have no problem recognizing his talent is noticable in this, there's some great stuff. All of it suppressed by the dullness that simply went too far. Even within this concept. After a while everything started working on my nerves, time after time. From the music to the performances and the camera-work, it just crossed a line.

There's no doubt Nicole Kidman went through a lot of emotions, throwing herself in this role with great devotion. Two big thumbs up for doing that. But it's the same story, that doesn't mean it works. For someone else this Kidman on the top of her game, for me she went flat on her face. I don't believe it for one second. And I really wanted to like it, I sure did. This film is not able to move me on any (positive) level. In the end, it ended up as a two star movie. Because of the things I did liked. I'm honest that way. (every way ;°) ) And still, the aversion is there at the same time.

Willing and capable to watch the musical more than once from different angels, I think it's only fair I don't have to reconsider my view on Moulin Rouge.

Actually Marvel had the nuts to use Ultimate Nick Fury instead of going the safe route with the other Nick Fury.

Oh yeah? How about a Japanese gentleman played by Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's? Not only the world's worst miscasting, but one of the world's most racist performances.

It's awful in its racism, yes. But I've moved on from letting ruin a great film for me. It was a different time, people weren't as sensitive. I've just accepted that it was terrible.

I found the Asian man scenes in Deuce Bigalo: European Gigalo to be more disgusting and racist, but that film is so horrible most people probably don't remember it.

Be that as it may, the forum topic is Worst Miscasts and, regardless of the quality of the film, this one qualifies as a front-runner for the top seed, at LEAST as much as John Wayne's as Genghis Kahn.

I've read your comments and others and I want to say that I don't think that OHMSS is a terrible movie by any means. There are a lot of good elements to the movie except Lazenby's acting. They knowingly hired Lazenby who didn't have any real acting experience and it shows. And I think his untrained acting, for me, undercuts the entire film. He was good for action, but not for acting. Based on acting alone I would have preferred Connery or Moore.

Also, if these guys would have exchanged roles maybe their movie might have been funny.

Forgot to include this. Bram Stoker's Dracula would have been way, way better if British actors would have been cast in these two roles.

They weren't; that's the problem. For several years, I wanted to see Diane Kruger as Sue, but she's getting a little too old for it now. Scarlett would've done a badass job with it, but she's already Black Widow; I'm thinking the next (legit) version should be played by an unknown.

Well, this is what Sophia Vergara looks like WITHOUT dying her hair (the producers told her that the American audience wouldn't buy a Latina with blonde hair -- even though in reality lots of Latinas have blonde hair, anyways):

Well, one thing's for sure; no one would be looking at her hair if she played Sue Storm. I'm sick of Hollywood casting intelligent characters with sex-symbol actresses.

Huh? Because beautiful women aren't intelligent?

Kate Beckinsale:

Quote:
Beckinsale read French and Russian literature at New College, Oxford, and was later described by a contemporary, journalist Victoria Coren, as "whip-clever, slightly nuts, and very charming".[14] She was involved with the Oxford University Dramatic Society, most notably being directed by fellow student Tom Hooper in a production of A View from the Bridge at the Oxford Playhouse.[15] She spent her third year in Paris as part of her compulsory year abroad as a Modern Languages student, after which she decided to quit university to concentrate on her burgeoning acting career: "It was getting to the point where I wasn't enjoying either thing enough because both were very high pressure. I was burning out and I knew I had to make a decision."[3]
Natalie Portman:

Quote:
In 2003, Portman graduated from Harvard University with an A.B. degree in psychology.[29][31][32][33] "I don't care if [college] ruins my career," she told the New York Post. "I'd rather be smart than a movie star."[34][35] At Harvard, Portman was Alan Dershowitz's research assistant.[36][37] While attending Harvard, she was a resident of Lowell House[38] and wrote a letter to the Harvard Crimson in response to an essay critical of Israeli actions toward Palestinians.[39
Quote:
As a student, Portman co-authored two research papers that were published in scientific journals. Her 1998 high school paper, "A Simple Method to Demonstrate the Enzymatic Production of Hydrogen from Sugar," co-authored with scientists Ian Hurley and Jonathan Woodward, was entered in the Intel Science Talent Search.[45] In 2002, she contributed to a study on memory called "Frontal lobe activation during object permanence: data from near-infrared spectroscopy" during her psychology studies at Harvard.[46][47]
Cindy Crawford:

Quote:
Crawford graduated from DeKalb High School in 1984, as valedictorian.[10] She won an academic scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University, which she attended for only one quarter. She dropped out in order to pursue a full-time modeling career. After working for photographer Victor Skrebneski in Chicago, Crawford moved to Manhattan in 1986 and signed with the Elite New York modeling agency.
Do I really need to go on?

That stuttering Vince Vaughn wannabe in The Spectacular Now was pretty awful. Felt like he belonged in a different movie.

Some great choices above, let me add Kirsten Dunst as Mary-Jane Watson in Spider-Man. She is not the spitfire that the character is in the comics.

Best choice so far: Mickey Rooney in BAT
