My issue is that when I am watching DirecTV sometimes I fast forward through commercials and when I hit play I get no audio. Sometimes it comes back after 10-15 seconds other times I have to switch inputs to get audio back.
Also when I use my Playstation and scroll through the menu's it usually wont make the scrolling noise for a few seconds. Is this related to the issue in this thread? |

the receiver that I gave to my daughter some years ago, failed, out of warranty, they replaced it and it's been working great ever since. again, you can take the chance, and yeah, nothing may ever happen, but, if it's an improvement on the hdmi board with a new chipset, I'd say go for it. oh and #GoPackGo! ![]() |

So, any advice would be appreciated. Warning: I am not a sound expert or a tech smarty. I just like having the setup and sound for some decent blu-ray movie viewing.
I bought my current receiver, the Onkyo TX-SR706, in February of 2009. Been fine up until around this year, and got worse yesterday. The main problem is when I switch HDMI inputs. They just aren’t recognized, and I get a black screen with a message that there’s no signal and to check the connections, and then the screen goes to blue. I’ve tried tricks with turning on the device (my PS3 and my region-free blu) first and then switching, and sometimes I’ll get a second’s worth of the right picture/menu, so I know the devices are on and fine. But then they fade to black and then blue. I got a new HDMI cable just in case it was that, but same issue; and I tried switching the devices to different inputs to see if it was just one that was worse, but it wasn’t. In addition, my speakers (5.1 BOSE setup...don’t make fun!) have recently started “chirping” loudly every so often. Intermittent and random through various speakers, but loud and annoying. Like a digital bird. I also sense deep base sounds/gulps every so often. So far, thankfully, my main input (my TiVo) hasn’t gone out, so I can watch ...but watching movies now seems impossible. I checked my serial number on that Onkyo page and it is NOT eligible for the help (despite having the same problems). Guess mine was manufactured right before 2009. Any thoughts? What is the typical lifespan for a receiver? I thought it would be longer. I don’t want to spend too much money trying to fix this one if I’m just going to have to buy a new one. And if I need a new one, what brands/types do you all recommend for my (modest) needs? Thanks! |

I'm with Solardad on this. I would go with a new unit. For what you had in this you could buy a fairly nice unit that would match your needs.
I just got back an Onkyo unit similar to yours purchased 2014, whereby the HDMI board stopped working. Sent it back under warranty last fall, got it back, but have not used it due to the Denon unit I had bought to replace it. I believe that too much heat surrounding these units in operation can cause lots of problems, so make sure there is plenty of fresh air wherever it is located. Sure, you could probably get by with a $250 unit but I'd say it depends on your room layout, size, etc. A $599 unit could probably be purchased below that with a sale, or wait until the new models come in an grab last years model for even less. You would get a more powerful unit with more features than the less expensive one. |

Okay, this is fascinating. I sent my 818 in under this warranty program a week or so ago and just got a mail for them saying I need to pay $75 for 'additional repairs'. The stated reason for the additional repair: Needs display board.
Erm, aren't their overheating display boards the entire reason this extended warranty program exists in the first place? I'm going to call and squawk a bit but if anybody has any specific suggestions I'd love to hear them. Thanks. |

Wow, that sounds pretty strange. I think when I sent mine in there was some paperwork to complete and send with it that had language regarding warranty work mixed together with just normal repair work. I remember thinking, this is weird, I am not supposed to pay for any of this. Filled out only stuff concerning warranty and sent it off. They did the repairs without any contact and it showed back up to me a few weeks later.
I had to send back a Sony A/V unit under warranty a year before this Onkyo and Sony was really good at keeping in contact with me throughout the whole time it was gone being fixed. I was fairly impressed. My experience with the Onkyo warranty was way below the service I received from Sony. I would email them back and state other than shipping you don't feel that you should be paying for any warranty repairs. Hope it all works out for you. |

Well kids looks like my 818 has for the second time in 4 years taken a dump... Went to the site and started the process and WHEW! it was accepted... Now just wanting for the box and TIME. Great unit... poor quality will push me to either Denon or Marantz it looks like next time. Love to get an Anthem but $$$ is $$$.. If the repair will just get me like 2 years I'd be happy till i replace it.

My 818 was repaired about a year ago after it would not put out any sound. It came back working, but ever since then it will still sometimes not put out any audio when I first turn it on, or when I switch from on input to another. I'm hoping it's just the quirky nature of the receiver, and not a sign of imminent death. It actually always did that, even when it was new.

My 818 started acting up with some sound settings about a month ago but I thought that it was my PC since it's was hooked up via HDMI... I should have paid more attention to the forums. Hopefully like i said this will be zero cost just no AVR for who knows how long.

For what it's worth, the turn around time on my repair was only a day or two. Add a few days for shipping there and back, and I was probably without my AVR for not much more than a week.
