I like how they call them "stand alone" players. That's a good description, but not in the way they intended.

This may be a collector's item.
That's like the best item description ever:

1. HDMI output (version 1.3a)
2. HQV Reon-VX video processing with upscaling to 1080p
3. Streams Dolby® Digital Plus, Dolby® TrueHD, and DTS-HD®
4. HD-DVD Capability (I would hope so, this is an HD-DVD player)
5. DTS®, Dolby® Digital, Digital Audio Output (could've easily been part of point nuber 3)
6. Streaming Audio Output Dolby Digital Plus®, Dolby TrueHD®, DTS-HD® (wait... it said this already)
7. 2 Channel 192/24-Bit Wolfson
8. 5.1 Channel 192/24-Bit Burr-Brown
9. 2:3 Pulldown
10. Video DAC 297 MHz/12-Bit (NSV)
11. Dynamic Range Control
12. Video Black Level Control
13. Digital Outputs 1 Optical/1 Coaxial (we get it, this outputs Dolby/DTS)
14. Analog Audio Output
15. CD-R/RW Playback Capability
16. DVD-R/RW Playback Capability*
17. S-Video Output
18. Built-in HD Scaler HQV Reon-VX (this was number 2 as well)
19. HDMI (up to 1080p) (this was number 1)
20. Supports 1080p/24Hz Video
21. Programmed Memory Playback
22. Multichannel Output (5.1 channel) (number 14)
23. 8-Language Soundtrack Capability
24. Dimmable Display
25. Remote Control

So really, there should really only be like 10-15 little specs here, not 25.

The table decorations in that page, with "sort by" and page jumps, look really sad.

Basically a HD-A30 ($298) for $1100?
And frankly after seeing HD DVD players between $98 (1080i) and less than $300 (1080p), who would ever want to spend $1100 on that?

Heck, The New Panasonic that seems technically even better is avail at $499 no?

Well, that's a bit of a stretch. It has more features than that machine:

Jack,

Are you kidding? for just 15 Mill I would go HD DUD exlusive for 18 months and wouldn't think twice about it.

(I would of course invest the money wisely and buy hella Blu Ray movies with it once the 18 months was up. )

I don't blame them for taking the bribe at all. It's hard to be a movie studio these days and big money is very practical.

Though,... it may have been wiser for them money wise not to make that mistake but they will be back in the game soon with the Blu Rays and still they have that fat check in the bank.

I don't think so. I think they quite possibly could be laughing at Toshiba though. I'd be willing to bet that $150MM is a LOT more than they would have made on BD releases in 18 months. But that doesn't take into account the reputational damage they incurred with colleagues, fellow companies, and BD consumers. It's hard to put a $$$ figure on that.

before or after they got to the bank?

personaly i think there smiling with a very wide greedy grin.

they get paid, they sell a few titles and when HD DVD turns to ash, they then flog all there stuff straight on BD and grin even wider.
