Thanks for the lead, but I cannot find any legitimate website seller who has region A "Free Birds" 3D BD. I think there's a Spanish bootleg on ebay (the seller is in Spain and he CLAIMS his 3D BD disc will play in region A and B players. His discs DO NOT come in a retail box. Could be a 3D BD rip/burn.

Import difficulty is why it is a rare find in the U.S..

See: Post#65 in the "Free Birds" Pre-Order Up. No 3D? thread.

Luckily, a few of these were gifted or I lucked out finding them before they went OOP. I think the Aus/NZ titles might still be in print. I have no idea why the original 3D version of Nightmare sells for over list with the 20th Ann. version so readily available.

Is sharknado 3d any good?

For a German conversion, it is pretty good. The conversion on Two Headed Shark, also on the disc, is slightly better. The 3D does add to the fun factor of watching Sharknado.

I have Ratatouille 3D. Not sure if it's considered rare though.

There are several imports of Beowulf available.
I own the French release and although it is listed as Region B in the database here, it plays in my region A players.

as per https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=287864 these are all region free 3D blu rays available English-friendly in Region B countries, they would be 'rare' for you Americans:

All Stars aka Streetdance 3 aka Streetdance Kids (Holland) - one scene has been cut from all 3D releases
1920: Battle Of Warsaw (Poland) - only version that includes English subtitles
Amphibious (Germany) - though maybe not on all players?
Asterix The Mansions Of The Gods (UK) - English dubbed
Battle For Terra (Germany)
Boogie (Australia) - English dubbed
Beowulf (France, Italy, Germany)
Free Birds (Italy) - opening text is in Italian, for full English you can get this Region A locked in Brazil or Region B locked in Australia
Garfield's Pet Force (Spain) - avoid the UK anaglyph version
Ghoul (Czech Republic) - includes English audio and subtitles for non-English dialogue
The Guillotines (Australia) - only version that includes English subtitles
Hara-Kiri Death Of A Samurai (Australia) - only version that includes English subtitles
Haunting Of Winchester House (Germany) - avoid the anaglyph version
Hidden (Germany)
Inferno (UK) - in a clear case. there is also a Region B locked UK version in a blue case, so make sure you know which one you're getting
Julia X (UK, Germany)
Jungle Safari (UK)
The Last Unicorn (Germany)
Legendary: Tomb Of The Dragon (France)
Little Hercules (Germany) - may be partly converted
Lost Place (Germany) - includes English subtitles
Magic Silver 2 (Norway) - only version that includes English subtitles
Measuring The World (Germany) - includes English subtitles
Mortadelo y Filemón contra Jimmy el Cachondo (Spain) - includes English subtitles
Noah (Germany, Italy)
Nova Zembla (Holland) - only version that includes English subtitles
The Prodigies (Germany)
The Seventh Son (all 3D versions are region free - German, Hong Kong, Thailand etc)
Sex Pot (Germany) - avoid the anaglyph version
The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (Holland)

Guess by rare, it's meant hard to get, at least in the United States.

Then would have to say beuwolf, Noah.

Would the twilight limited editions count? If so, then include harlock, space pirate, miss Sadie Thompson.

I have a few UK 3D BDs, nothing too remarkable.

But I do have a decent collection of 3D PS3 games, one of which has a 3D movie too.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Tekke.../26959/#Review

Tekken Hybrid has a full-length CG 3D movie on disc called Tekken Blood Vengeance 3D.

The disc is a 'Dual Play' disc with game and movie on same platter. It costs $10 at Gamestop.

If anyone's interested, I can test it in a PS4 and make sure movie is playable on non-PS3 devices.

"Blu-Ray compatibility – TEKKEN Hybrid supports all Blu-Ray players and plays Blood Vengeance in any Blu-Ray player and both the movie and game content on the PlayStation"

I don't think there are many Blu-Rays that could be considered truly rare, 3-D or otherwise. In this day and age nearly everything is acquired easily enough if you're determined. However, there are definitely those discs which exist in relatively few collections compared to the average big sellers. That can be discovered by sorting your titles here on the site by collections to see how many other users here also own each one, and for me the "rarest" in my collection would be:

  1. Dragonball Z: Resurrection 'F' 3D (Hong Kong), 5 collections
  2. Scar 3-D Uncut (Austria), 5 collections
  3. Berliner Philharmoniker/Simon Rattle: A Musical Journey in 3D in Singapore, 15 collections
  4. Bizet: Carmen in 3D, 27 collections

None of which surprises me. A couple oddball imports, themselves in niche genres, a classical music performance and an opera. I wish 3-D had taken off enough that more 3-D recordings of Operas performances were released on Blu.

Hi 13thman...

Does your copy of 1920: Battle of Warsaw play all right?
My copy loses sync between the left eye image and right eye image
at around the 14 minute mark and stays that way for the rest
of the film, rendering it unwatchable.

Thanks for the very useful list!

Thanks Ray and Joe. I'll definitely see if I can get my hands on either the French or the Italian release.
Beowulf was the first film I ever watched in 3D and the experience made a lasting impression on me. I've since watched it at home in 2D many times, but it's not quite the same so I'd love to see it in 3D again. I think it's really weird how this has never gotten a wider release on 3D Blu-ray.

Mine played fine, there's some super strong 3D in the film so I'm sure I would have noticed it if the eyes went out of sync. I bought it new, last year I think.

Using that methodology, my rarest titles are mainly German autoconversions e.g.:

Alien Predator 3D (0 collections)

Ignoring all of those, the rarest are:

The Best Of 3D Limited 4 Disc Collector's Edition (1 collection)

Box Office 3D (1 collection)

Aida (2 collections)

The Reef 2 (2 collections)

The Forbidden Girl 3D (2 collections)

Pengi and Sommi (2 collections)

Lichtmond 1-3 (2 collections)

The Snow Queen 1 & 2 (2 collections)

I do have a few foreign-released titles that aren't listed on this site, such as the South African release of Legends Of Oz: Dorothy's Return, the Dutch release of All Stars and the Italian release of Battle Of The Year.

Hi 13th,

You also have two German conversions of Aida? Why should this include the opus arts edition which is also in 3D and I own?

My rarest? I picked up the Samsung published "Monsters vs Aliens" still sealed. It's listed as the first BD 3D in the States, so ... yeah. It's not that "rare," but it's cool to have.

My 3D gems are any movie I enjoy and that's in strong 3D for most of it. Those are the 3D movies I'll watch again and again in the years ahead.

My biggest group of 3D "rarities" is Disney 3Ds -- mostly from the UK because they weren't released here (Frozen, Alice Through the Looking Glass), are hard to find here (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King), or were easier to get there (Tangled, The Jungle Book which shipped just before the U.S. 3D was announced); I also have Disney 3Ds from Mexico (Maleficent, Planes: Fire & Rescue), Germany (Ratatouille), and Hong Kong (Big Hero 6). I also got hardware-exclusive 3Ds of Alice in Wonderland (2010) & Michael Jackson's This Is It. My rarest 3D, however, is the Italian version of The Last Emperor -- the only Best Picture winner other than Titanic to be officially converted to 3D (none yet has been shot in native 3D, though two Best Director winners were).
