It has been reported that The Mask, a movie that isn't really a 3D movie...but a movie that has three 3D dream sequences, will be coming sometime in 2015... via Kino Classics....courtesy of Bob Furmanek 's 3-D Film Archive. It's been reported that the release will be sometime after the release of 3D Rarites.
Bob...care to confirm or deny?? |

I can confirm after 3-D RARITIES is finished, we'll begin our highly anticipated restoration of THE MASK. The creepy and surreal 3-D segments based on designs by Slavko Vorkapich will be restored from original 35mm elements.
Stay tuned for some exciting announcements of our collaborative work on this landmark Canadian production with the Toronto International Film Festival and Kino Lorber. |

Among vintage 3d films I want to see, it wouldn't be my first choice, but I've heard good things about those dream sequences.
I'll certainly be picking up a copy. |

I believe this was shown on TV in 3-D when I was a kid. You had to go pick up the paper glasses somewhere. I know you they did another movie too, but can't remember what it was. I think maybe one of the Creature movies from Universal.

Yes, there were a bunch of titles converted to anaglyphic 3-D for TV viewing in the early 1980's.

The Mask 3D looks like a creepy horror film, cool. I put on my red/cyan glasses (anaglyph 3D) and a few shots in that trailer were in strong 3D, though with anaglyph, the pop outs suffer from heavy double imaging in this case where the eyeballs are flying out of the screen and the skulls, so hopefully they have a presentation also in stereo 3D. Looks like fun and nice to see it preserved.

'Mask 3D' is a black & white, mostly 2D film, partly in 3D (for a total of around 15 mins or so). I would have preferred not wearing 3D glasses for 2D parts, but somehow the blu-ray rendering in my set up forced me to do that, I was seeing ghosting in 2D sequences otherwise; Not fun.
The 3D parts are kind of dream/vision sequences with trippy images and are choke-full of 3D pop-ups. One of the those effects, of a snake slithering by, was good enough to make me wince. Rest were okay too. The movie itself is like a long episode of old b/w Twilight Zone. Premise is good but the story doesn't really goes anywhere. |

I didn't experience such problems. In fact, I thought the flat scenes had a sense of mild 3D in them. |

If you were seeing any crosstalk on the flat sections, your system is not calibrated properly. Those should play perfectly flat. You might want to check your 3-D Depth setting.

On a correctly calibrated display, the flat scenes should be perfectly 2-D with no double-image whatsoever.

No double image with the glasses off. Very clear. Perfect with no ghosts or shadows though obviously too bright. Maybe wearing active glasses affected depth perception in terms of objects not being totally on top of each other, like CRTs used to do? Or maybe the restoration was so good that it retained the natural depth of the original 2D source material and I used a poor choice of words? |

Thanks for confirmation. Even I am not sure why I saw double images in 2D scenes. Maybe I did something in 3D settings at the time.
I didn't have this problem while watching 'Twixt'. That movie too had only about 5-10 mins of 3D, and for the rest of the time I could watch the 2D part without glasses (no double images) |

There's real artistry in the way 3D is used in this. Those mask segments are eerie and experimental, and cleverly filmed/choreographed to maximise the effect of the 3D medium. They're as close to waking dream sequences as I've seen on screen, and nightmarish at that. Beautifully restored.
The film around them goes nowhere, unfortunately. It's a half-baked plot stretched to feature length. I do wish the storytelling had been stronger in 1960s 3D films (The Mask, The Bubble, September Storm) because they're showcases for really great stereography. I enjoyed the 3D animated short 'One Night in Hell' as a special feature. It looks terrific, and has a ghoulish, Tim Burton-esque sense of humour. Good fun. |
