Blu-ray Knight

I've seen this movie 3 times, in 3 different theatres and I don't expect the blu-ray's PQ to blow me away. Most of the 35mm footage looked pretty fuzzy and soft, almost like a 720p video blown up to 2k, and while the IMAX footage looked great, the transition in image quality was a bit distracting at times.
Does anyone know if it will have a 7.1 track or a 5.1? I don't think it was shown in atmos. |

Saw this for a second time in 70mm IMAX, really hope the Blu-ray does the visuals justice and that Paramount includes alternating aspect ratios. Not expecting a boatload of extras so top-tier A/V and maybe a Steelbook would be good enough.

All 35mm appears a little under par on iMax screens i feel, but it is a big old screen to fill. The aspect ratio change is a case of horses for courses. Personally i would prefer the whole thing to be shot in iMax, but its just not possible. My preference would be to have the aspect shift over 100% letterbox though for sure. So we can enjoy that beautiful iMax film. Waiting with bated breath. |

But back to Interstellar -- Paramount is usually unimpeachable when it comes to A/V on new releases so I'm not too concerned. I just hope they include the IMAX alternating aspect ratios on the general release, not as an exclusive and not on a re-release a year later. |

There is nothing wrong with the PQ on TDKR, perhaps some black crush, its TDK that fails big time (the 35mm scenes).
Nolen doesn't follow the common way of colour grading/timing, he bypasses the use of a DI. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Nolan#Method His films have a specific look, and don't look colourful and they don't pop. |

TDK's Blu-ray is a bit shite but since when did TDKR get a bad rep for PQ? It looks great, insofar as Nolan's tungsten-tinged colour & blacks-deeper-than-night aesthetic is concerned, with none of the sharpening that plagues TDK. I saw the movie on 2K digital and 15/70 IMAX and the Blu-ray is fine.
Coincidentally I saw Interstellar in the same formats and, as with Nolan's previous films, the 35mm scenes looked like most anamorphic shows that haven't gone through a DI, i.e. they're superficially soft (unlike the sharpened, noise-reduced images you get in DI's) yet still laden with detail. Yes, there are some unusually soft 35mm scenes like Coop weeping at the monitor but there are also others which look wonderful, like most of the shots of Jessica Chastain. Can't wait to get this on Blu-ray! Last edited by Geoff D; 12-12-2014 at 11:52 PM. |
