I had ordered mine from TCM Dec 1 and finally cancelled it since it was backordered for 2 months. When I spoke to someone there he mentioned that it was likely that they would be sending the Mill Creek release out for pending orders since their licensing agreement was over. That won't go over well to some.

It's TCM, expect the worst.

I own the TCM version and they had recalled the Blu-ray and replaced it with corrected versions for free earlier last year...

My bet is the Mill Creek version will be an unrestored version done on the cheap as is all their releases....you will notice that even Amazon says it is a 1080p version from a 4K restoration, not a 4K version. Mill Creek always seem to fly on the cheap side of every issue...

Well, they are getting it from Sony and it isn't public domain (AFAIK). So I'm not sure there would be some "alternate" 4K version floating around for Mill Creek to use.

Don't get me wrong, I know Mill Creek has screwed things up in the past, finding a way to use inferior sources. Maybe somehow it will be inferior like the first TCM disc was? But it's likely from the same 4K restoration at least.

However if they have confirmed using the lossles audio and subtitles (unlike the messed up TCM disc), that is a positive start.

It will be from the same 4K restoration done by Sony that was licensed to TCM. The differences will probably come down to encoding

Just to confirm what MifuneFan said, this is from the Sell Sheet:

Quote:
TCM has recently released a Blu-ray + DVD combo of this film. We are both using the same 4k restoration master. Their product has a $29.99 SRP and while this release will be at only $14.98.
Source

And tallrichard, you seem to misunderstand how 4k is done for Blu-ray. There are no true 4k UHD discs yet, all the "4k discs" out by Sony are "Mastered in 4k." So they are in fact, 1080p discs sourced from a 4k master. In some cases, like The Sound of Music, the 1080p Blu-ray can be from a 4k master created from an 8k restoration.

From the overall response, I'm wrong in my Mill Creek opinion on this Blu-ray...though I would want to wait and see what they distribute....

Thanks for all the quality feedback...

So basically, everyone saying it was "too expensive" for TCM to license the existing subtitle tracks are proven wrong. Yeah, it's somewhat expensive to have to create a track from scratch, but if Mill Creek can include the tracks that already exist, then I was right all along.

I bought the TCM and added the existing sub track myself with FREE software (also for Only Angels Have Wings), so for any company not to include them (TCM, Olive) is just being cheap.

Perhaps I'll pick these up and dump the TCM versions.

Well, it is somewhat of a wait and see. That is fair. Mill Creek is almost as bad as Echo Bridge IMO in that they will put just about anything on blu-ray.

But sourced from the same 4K restoration, lossless audio, subtitles at least make it sound like they have their ducks in a row on this one. They have at least done some good discs from Sony already, so if they get a good source there's no reason it shouldn't be essentially the same as the TCM disc. Hopefully there isn't some drastic flaw in the encoding or authoring of the discs. I'm going to wait and see just in case.

Un-friggin'-believable! I guess I'll be upgrading from the TCM version to this one by Mill Creek (!!!). Presuming the transfer is just as good as the TCM version (probably will be better...), I'll just chuck the old one in the closet on the off-chance I ever want to glance at the extras again.

Just when I thought I couldn't hate TCM's home video division than I already did, something like this comes along. That sure was $24.99 well spent.

Yeah, they screwed over Only Angels Have Wings, too, one of my very favorite films. I just ripped it and added the subs myself.

Mill Creek are a distributor and like all the others, they can only work with the masters they are given by the rights owners. But since they are a budget label, they are not usually given the cream of the crop, so that's why they have a bad reputation. That being said, most of their Columbia releases I have look pretty good, and I am sure this one will too... especially if they are using the 4k master. Plus you can't beat the price.

Yes...some of their stuff is excellent. I'm VERY happy with many of their titles.

I think a lot of the criticism comes from folks just repeating what they read or looking at prices instead of looking at movies.

There's a mentality that, "Sony put this out for $25.00 and now Mill Creek is putting it out for $8.00 so it MUST be worse". But I have a lot of Mill Creek double features that are just as good as stuff from the big boys.

Like any other Blu-ray presentation...people should be reviewing the audio video quality of the movie itself and not reviewing the company.

Exactly. I picked up a ton of those double features for $3 each, which works out to $1.50 a movie, and the transfers on all the ones I've watched look just fine. They don't go toe-to-toe with Criterion, but so what? They look perfectly acceptable to me.

They are doing the same exact thing as Twilight Time except TT charges 30 bucks a pop plus shipping!

I would also be shocked if Sony were not handing them the encoding too. My guess is this will look and sound exactly like Sony wants it to.

I'm excited for this, but keeping my fingers crossed. You never know with Mill Creek and Echo Bridge. Hit or miss, but sometimes they'll surprise you. I bought the hell out of those Mill Creek double features when they were $3 at Walmart (and even bought a few at $5 a pop during the previous WM sale a year or two earlier).
