watched the first one today - quality is pretty good.
not as sharp as other BDs from an original negative will be, but it is well done. There are a lot of sections that scratches are visible and changes in contrast/brightness between frames, but again, it is the source and has been corrected very well to make it as clear as a presentation as possible knowing the source. |

I didn't really expect too much considering the original negatives were burnt in a fire. Its nothing short of a miracle how they were restored.
Haven't heard of any compression issues, but that is something I don't really pay attention to. I've seen a ton of films I thoroughly enjoyed and thought looked great only to come here and see page after page of screenshot comparisons and complaints. From what I gather on these forums I think as a whole Criterion needs to reevaluate there compression techniques, but personally I never notice artifacts and other oddities for the most part. |

I watched The Apu Trilogy in its entirety over the past two days, and I think that it's a magnificent-looking set of transfers.
I also don't go compression-hunting when I watch Blu-rays, and I usually only notice something if it actively interferes with my enjoyment of a film. That never happened while I was watching these three discs. I cannot add a lot that others have not already said about the three movies. They pack quite an emotional punch, and they all share a low-key brilliance when it comes to storytelling. |

I'm starting to really wish I had picked this up with the BF coupon.
Unfortunately I'm almost broke until tomorrow and today is the last day for the 30%. Any one here not love or feel lukewarm about these films? ...it would make me feel better. |

Are you saying that the movie played in 5.1? That shouldn't happen unless you forced it in your AV to a 5.1 playback, the audio track on the blu-rays for all the movies should be mono and sound should come from the centre channel only.

I bought new a centre speaker klipsch and new receiver with Atmos and DTS X.
Straighter to audio It's working on Mono audio but with subwoofer. My old Receiver force PCM 5.1 because there my small speakers are 120Hz. Large Centre speaker must 40Hz to 20kHz. |

Has anyone here seen a Ray film called Devi?
I watched it last night on Hulu and was shocked at how awful the PQ was. No doubt the master they were working with was in bad shape. But it's more than that. From what I could tell, it was just a poorly shot film. Bad lighting, bad camera work all around. It had the production values of a silent picture. Quite surprising for a master craftsman like Satyajit Ray. Not like it was his first film or anything. ...made it very difficult to actually pay attention to the story. |

Have heard of it but never seen it. Frankly film preservation has never been much of a thing in India, I remember watching movies in the 90s when they were brand new that would suddenly look terrible just a couple of years later. Can't comment on the lighting or camerawork, however.

My copy of the Trilogy arrived in the mail a couple of days ago and I couldn't be more excited to watch these films.
I decided to check out the first 10 minutes or so to get a feel of what to expect and I was amazed at how quickly I was pulled into the world of these characters. I felt totally transported back to what life might have been in the villages in India at that time. Oh and the PQ is amazing considering how badly damaged the original negatives were. Very special release this is. |
