CARSEY-WERNER COMEDIES NOW IN BRILLIANT HIGH DEFINITION

Carsey-Werner Television Distribution announces plans to convert six of their best known and most beloved comedies to enhanced high-definition, making this the most aggressive HD initiative by any major program supplier to date. Out of the extensive library of hit situation comedies, the programs to be made available in full-screen, high-definition include: That ‘70s Show, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Roseanne, Grounded for Life, A Different World, and of course The Cosby Show. The magnitude of re-mastering is a major undertaking due to the elaborate process which includes going back to the original film and tape elements and re-scanning all 1,000+ episodes. This new initiative will allow all of these programs to be delivered in full-screen, 16:9 HD format. Finally, color will be rebalanced and sharpened for each of the six series.
When they say "going back to the original film and tape elements and re-scanning" they mean going back to the film for the shows shot on film which are definitely That '70s Show & Grounded For Life. And going to tape for the ones shot on tape which would be the rest. 3rd Rock From The Sun is a confusing one, I'd assume it was shot on film, but the "HD" masters on Netflix look like crap. They look like a straight upscale and crop. If 3rd Rock From The Sun is what we can expect for Roseanne, I'd rather them just leave it as is.

Yeah, the current NBC created "HD" masters of "3rd Rock" for Netflix do look horrible. They're definitely not from higher resolution source material whether it be 16mm or 35mm film or early HD video cameras and severely cropped as if they were never, ever composed for the 16x9 ratio in the first place.

The show is a modern classic of screwball comedy with a top notch team of writers and a mix of new (at the time) and veteran stage, TV, and film actors (including the wonderful award-winning John Lithgow, Jane "SNL" Curtin, and Wayne "Newman" Knight) and should be transferred with the utmost care.

If they just slap these upconverts on a Blu-ray and call it a day, I won't be buying the set.

I read somewhere that NBC made sure the shows that aired on their network were shot on film in the mid or late 80's just in case they needed higher quality masters of them later on. That's why I thought 3rd Rock From The Sun would be safe from looking like crap if it ever got the HD treatment. If 3rd Rock From The Sun was indeed shot on film, hopefully Carsey-Werner just weren't able to get the film negatives at the moment and will be able to later on to do a proper HD master.

I hope it's not an error on their part. At that price, it's more than worth the upgrade!

Agreed. Seems too good to be true. I was thinking it was going to be much more release day. To me $8.75 a season is extremely reasonable.

Grounded for Life has been properly remastered in HD, the entire series HD masters are on Netflix.

I need it on blu-ray though. I'm not a big fan of streaming as i don't use wifi and it's a massive pain in the behind to hook internet up to my TV so if i stream it's probably watching it on my 23 inch monitor.

Also i'd prefer not to support streaming, i dislike the entire concept of it. In truth i'd rather watch a DVD than something with HD streaming. Not owning the series/movie i pay for is absurd, also needing to use my internet i don't like. Movies/series is my downtime from internet usage.

This whole "digital streaming" is the future garbage isn't happening on my watch! I'll gladly go back to VHS before that.

Oh, I want it on Blu-ray too, I was just letting you know it was done properly and not the way 3rd Rock From The Sun was done if you didn't already know. Here are a few screen captures from the first episode if you or anyone else who is a fan are interested, they're only 1600x900 because that's the full resolution of my laptop.

[Show spoiler]

Nice! That does look pretty good i admit. Liking the vivid colors. It's just a basic sitcom so i wouldn't expect it to be outstanding. I refuse to stream it though. Until i can own it on blu-ray in my mind it doesn't exist. Principle > quality I'm not a quality addict, i can easily be happy with DVD or VHS rips, etc. The biggest things is that i own the item first and foremost and have it for offline use.

I would have never started using Netflix if my sister hadn't gotten a subscription. When she got it she sent me her username and password and I got bored one weekend and decided to see what they had. lol I mostly use it to watch shows I never really watched when they were on and old movies I've always wanted to see. It's kind of a bad thing to be doing that though, because my BD wishlist just gets larger.

If the DVDs are now $30, I wonder if they will be $10 when the BD releases lol

BB price on this BD is great, I bet that is going to be the release day pricing.

My sister right at this moment is watching it on netflix a 3rd time on it lol

Just because you buy audio/video on a physical or digital format, doesn't mean that it belongs to you to do whatever you wish, technically. Your purchase only means that you own a legal copy of what is their copyright-protected property. Paying $ for something does not = owning. Technically speaking.

That said, I do agree with your statement on going back to VHS before you ever start streaming.
