Two theaters are playing this near me. One 4.4 miles, and the other 18.5. I was going to hold out for the Blu-ray though, since I've gotten most of the Ghibli release thus far. Is it safe to assume they're following the standard theatrical run to home video, since this is technically a new release in the US? So it should be about 3-4 months for the BD to come out.

The closest theater to me only played it on the 26th, so I have no choice but to wait for the Blu-ray...

Disney Movie Club is probably your best best. For the GKids releases, waiting on Amazon sales I guess.

Only Yesterday will be opening in my city on the 25th and will only be staying for a week. I'm a little worried about having to go to downtown at night to see it ,but I'll be their opening night.

I'll definitely be buying the Blu-ray, but I'm not sure where to put it. Should it go in between all the Disney-released Ghibli titles, which would look out of place but at least be chronological (1991), at the beginning of the GKIDS-released Ghibli titles (chronologically 1991), or at the end of the GKIDS-released Ghibli titles (chronologically 2016)? I'm leaning toward the last option, but I don't know...

Just saw it, good movie hindered by some pacing issues IMO.
[Show spoiler]The conversation between Taeko and Toshio when she gets picked up at the station, for example, was too drawn out. Or some of the inner monologues of grown-up Taeko felt a bit forced. Like when she was bringing up this bully kid to Toshio, who presumably impacted very her much during 5th grade but it's missing from all the memories up to that point.

Despite this however, all the scenes with little Taeko were hilarious. The pineapple scene, when she imagines herself as an actress, trying to not skip P.E. class, etc. Me and the entire theater were laughing wholeheartedly. Isao Takahata's movies are always a rollercoaster of emotions. He is a master at making you laugh and the next moment create heart-stopping situations of tenseness or sentimentality (the scene with Hirota, the baseball kid, stood out a lot).
This movie, while not among my favorites from Ghibli, still cements my preference of Takahata over the talented yet predictable Miyazaki. Definitely worth the watch.

Will this be eligible for the Best Animated Feature award at the Oscars next year? (Besides the fact that, obviously, it's 25 years old) Still looking forward to the blu release!

I don't think so. I don't remember the exact rule, but I think it has to be released in the US within 1-2 years of its release in its country of origin.

There was zero chance to see this when it was briefly available in theaters, so I'll definitely pounce on this release. I can't wait to finally see Only Yesterday.

Pre-ordered this with the expectation it will drop to around $20 by or before release.

I saw it in San Diego last month and the only showing I could get to was the dub. It was actually pretty good - Ridley was especially good; Patel's London accent didn't fit well imo. It was lovely to see it on a big screen and it was very moving.

Dev Patel was born and raised in London and his accent still doesn't fit well?

I believe so; the last few GKIDS releases have been through Universal.

I think they might have meant fit well within the movie/setting.

Universal seems to be distributing the 'bigger' (more mainstream?) GKIDS titles lately. Starting with Kaguya and Song of the Sea, and followed by When Marnie Was There and Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet. But they still have titles releasing through Cinedigm--Zarafa last year and Extraordinary Tales this year.

No surprise that Only Yesterday is Universal. I expect Boy and the World and April and the Extraordinary World to release through Universal as well, based on the established pattern. But who knows what the exact details of the deal are.
