I'm not denying its blu-ray worthiness in general. I just thought that the information derivable from 16mm was probably less than that of 4k. Like maybe 1080p would be "enough" to capture it.
The Shield was shot Super 16, which isn't the same as regular 16. It's a larger, wider aspect negative, and has more resolution that regular 16 (but not as much as 35). It tops out around 3K, maybe 3.5K depending on how much the stock was pushed. So it would benefit from 4K moreso than 2K. Super 16 can also be digitally enlarged to 35mm with very little loss in quality.

Well those are still 1080p (although with, I assume, 4k scans). I meant if it was worth it for a 4K UHD blu-ray/whatever.

More excited about this than The Wire (but both are amazing). Can't wait.

I would prefer this in the OAR, but knowing that it was protected for widescreen from the start (as the Sony releases of the first five seasons show) makes it a less bitter pill to swallow. And it's The Shield, one of only two police shows I've enjoyed (the other being The Wire).

Hot Damme! Cletus Van Damme!

My favorite show of all time, as well.

This show doesn't get as much love as it deserves. Whether in HD or SD, Blu-ray or DVD... do yourself a favor and give this brilliant show a chance, if you haven't seen it.

And thanks to all my fellow Shield fanatics who helped make this remaster happen. Fingers crossed for a solid retrospective or cast reunion like on the Star Trek: TNG sets.

I guess I'm the only one not seeing any kind of "announcement" here. When I read Ryan say that the 4k conversion will "allow" for the release of "Blu Ray DVDs", I took it as it would be possible to release the show in Blu-Ray, not that Fox has actually committed to doing it. I get that it can be interpreted the other way, but it's just too vague for me to get overly hopeful, especially knowing how supportive Fox is with TV on Blu-Ray. I'll be more encouraged if I see an "X-Files" announcement, even though I know that's a bit bigger than "The Shield" in terms of content since they have to try and find a price point where people would pay for nine 22 episode seasons of a tv show on Blu-Ray. I can't think of an existing set that large off-hand.... "The Shield" would be more manageable.

I have no doubt that the Blu-rays will be released. Although, I wouldn't even mind an HD version on Netflix. No fears for a bad presentation with widescreen as the Sony DVDs look great in 16:9. The only episode that has a moment or two of weirdness is the pilot episode, which I hope they will remove one moment where you see a camera person quite prominently. Otherwise, every episode looks fantastic.

I still get a laugh out of Sony's stance on 16mm shot shows back in 2009. The studio gave the excuse that smaller negatives are not up to HD resolution. Total BS. The Walking Dead is shot on Super16, just as The Shield and many other tv shows before digital recording become standard. Usually Super16 is used for cost savings over Super35, but some shows actually benefit from the grainy look of the smaller negative, such as The Walking Dead. The Walking Dead being shot on Super16 was Frank Darabont's decision to give the show a distinctive look, even though I am sure AMC would have preferred to save money shooting HD Digital. The attached links to the article about The Shield back in 2009 when Sony released the show as a complete set is below.

Yeah, good point. Maybe they'd release seasons 1-2 and then make the rest MOD DVD only like they're doing with the likes of Louie.

I remember the show was cut all over the place when it aired on TV here (Ireland), but why was the DVD release cut? I assumed that what I got in the complete box was everything, uncut.........

This may not be accurate, but I heard Channel 5 edited it to fit its regular timeslot (it was an extended finale in the US) and that was the version that ended up being released here.
I bought season 5 from the US just to get the longer finale, so I've never seen the short one to see just how badly they ruined it, but reports weren't good!

This is a must buy indeed. I just hope, since Ryan is overseeing the process personally, that we get the extended versions... also for Europeans. Or just have it region free...
Either way, this is good news

I remember when the final season was ending and they released these deep conversational interviews between two cast-members at a time on the website. It was a great way to pair everyone up and discuss the relationship between those two characters. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? And were those released on the DVD box sets?
