Yeah, & a really great looking Blu-ray of a very enjoyable movie. This film must be the king of the flashbacks. The story is told in flashback, & in that flashback there's another flashback, & in that flashback there's yet another flashback. It all makes perfect sense, but I can't think of another film like it.

Recently got a UK Warner archive release. Honestly a very odd film. As mentioned flashbacks all over the place, can't decide if it is a "Casablanca" spy/love film, a prison break or a sea adventure. The model use is very obvious, distracting and excessive, whilst was limited and "charming" when noticed it in Casablanca. Maybe the most bizarre bit was the hidden flying fortress airbase in the idyllic countryside somewhere in England. What were they hiding from?, I think the Germans knew who was attacking them, and by that stage in the war the allies had air superiority. Pretty confident in saying nothing like that happened in reality, and not sure what the film was aiming for there, weird. Then there was the famous wiping out of the downed german aircrew scene. At least could see was aiming for, got to match the germans fighting dirty and hard but it is certainly a mixed message matching the Nazi's in brutality. If nothing else it disproves the idea that all old films were high quality, lol.
Edit just noticed Aclea said more or less same thing someway back, as ever expressed in much better English. At least know not alone in being startled by this film's oddness. Last edited by MillyD; 08-29-2024 at 11:44 AM. |
