I'm presuming he'll be a trainer himself, and Creed will fight Drago's son or someone else he's trained. I think it could be fantastic and seems like the logical next step in the story, considering Dolph is still with us.

Why would it be logical?

If they wanted to dig up the Drago killed my father trope...they could have easily replaced Conlon with Drago Jr in the first film.

I can watch Rocky 3 for that drama. Rehashing it is lazy writing.

Adonis didnt witness his fathers death.
So there are no stakes unless its forced with Drago and co. digging up old wounds.

Drago as trainer rather than Drago as fighter would be more rational and acceptable. Even Rocky Balboa didn't take the idea of a fighter in his fifities being a credible threat to the heavyweight crown. Also Drago the fighter comes from the cartoon end of franchise and these new Rocky films (as ludicrous as OAP Rocky fighting for the title was) have been successful imo because they took the franchise back to its more grounded roots.

Bingo.

Creed isnt about beating the evil villain.

Also, Drago was kinda redeemed at the end of the film when he accepts his loss like a true sportsman. I don't really wanna see evil Drago back, but the idea of a Creed vs Drago "grudge" between the sons and a Drago that's kinda embarassed/ashamed by his antics back in the old cold war days and seeking redemption from a public standpoint might be interesting. Rocky Balboa was about a guy dealing with a legacy he wishes he could get back, but Creed 2 could deal with a ex-fighter with a legacy he wants to re-write

Without the Cold War atmosphere that story is weightless.
It was a cartoon from the start.

I was excited about this until the Drago announcement. We don't need him.

I could picture Drago being the trainer of a Russian rival for Adnois who is trained by Rocky and that it focuses on a rivalry maybe between sons. With Drago trying to reign in his own son who is very much like he was when he fought Apollo.

The story wouldn't have to be a direct rehash of Rocky 3. It would be a movie more akin to fathers and sons now that Rocky has become that father figure to Adonis and poignant because Drago was who took his father away from him and led to him only being able to remember him through the media and tapes kept of him.

Rocky already got revenge on Drago for Creed's death. That's part of why beating him was so important. A young Creed Jr. fighting an old Drago to avenge a father he never knew doesn't quite work. If they want to give Creed a new start as a franchise then there's no reason to dig up more characters from the Rocky films. Rocky Balboa is all they need to stay connected.
Maybe some imagination in creating a rival for Adonis is what's needed here. Bringing back Rocky's old opponents or sons of them is too obvious and far fetched at this point. In the timeline, they've been well out of it for too long for them to matter anymore.

This is more likely.

The whole point of Creed was Adonis finding out about his father, and realising he was a fighter just like him. He sought out Rocky to train him. The film wasn't just about Rocky becoming a trainer, and training some random guy. They had a strong link due to Apollo Creed.

So, to carry on with those themes setup in Creed, surely Adonis would have an issue with the person who killed his father? That's why I'm saying it feels like the next logical step, to have Adonis fight someone trained by Drago, or even better his son. It has dramatic weight, and more than Apollo simply fighting some random new opponent.

It saddens me that Stallone is the only one talking about this project. Not a peep out of Jordan (who will return, of course) or Coogler (probably not).

He's the only one that has to. What else is Stallone up to? The others still have Black Panther coming up first, in addition to whatever other projects Jordan might have in the immediate pipeline.
