Ummm, isn't Blatty's '83 book a sequel to the Exorcist? I haven't read it, but I had been under the impression it was a sequel. Wikipedia (that ever-so-reliable site) has a fairly in-depth plot summary which seems to contain all the same connections as the movie ended up having. I think multiple characters from the first, especially the possessed Damian Karras, qualify it as more than a "loosely connected spinoff"? It's certainly a very different kind of plot, though, so I agree there's no reason it should have had a similar look.

I read it years ago. It is IMHO a sequel. It was a book written by the author as a sequel, and as he created it, he can do whatever he wants with the next book. Just because hollywood wants to make people think that "Sequel" = "same sh## just more", like Alien and Aliens, it doesn't make the actual CREATORS work not a sequel.

Other great examples of this are the Koji Suzuki Ring cycle books. Ring, Spiral and Loop. Oddly Spiral got a movie adaptation, but it didn't stop the "lets do the same again with Ring 2 et al"... Also Clive Barker's The Hellbound Heart. He created Hellraiser. But he publishes The Scarlet Gospels and aholes have the utter nerve to whine about it, just because it didn't fit the same, tired movie sequel formula ("ooh we just want Pinhead to come along and tear someone naughty apart"). I even heard someone here call it "fan fiction".

Why wait? The theatrical cut is well respected and very good.

Because it reads like bad fan fiction. It's his most undercooked, poorly edited work.

Here's to hoping they remix 5.1 track for this release. As the dvd and current one on the blu-ray are a let down.

I agree. The Laserdisc was the last time the film sounded good.

Ah some more armchair experts to add to the ignore list.

I guess everyone would have been happier if Legion was say three children possess and 4 priests trying to exorcise them. Yawn.

Trust me, it's a sequel. Kinderman, Father Dyer and Karras are important characters and the fact that Karras
[Show spoiler] was possessed by the Gemini killer is directly related to Regan's exorcism in the first book.

Legion is a great book as-is, I have no idea what you're on about.

Isn't it great to be insulted by someone who not only doesn't understand the insult (someone offering an opinion of a book is not an "armchair expert"), but doesn't even bother to check what you're referring to (The Scarlet Gospels, not Legion)?

This is fantastic news. I must admit I really like the theatrical cut, and will miss Miller and Williamson if their parts are completely cut. But I do want to see this in its original, intended form.
