I liked this one a lot, actually, though I am a sucker for disaster movies. I thought the balance of buildup vs. disaster was well done, and the fate of the rig was sufficiently intense (and special-effects-spectacular). I agree it felt a bit Michael Bayish in places, but it was never anywhere near as stupid as a lot of Bay's output, Armageddon definitely included. I also appreciated that it didn't seem overly manipulative emotionally like some disaster flicks. That said I did tear up a bit at the start of the end credits when they showed the photos of the real people who were killed, and a heard a lot of sniffling in the auditorium toward the end of the film proper.

Not an all-time classic or anything but a very solid piece of filmmaking. Just a shame it cost such an extravagant amount to make and will likely be another flop for Lionsgate. They just can't catch a break this year.

I'll also say that as a totally biased big fan of the format, I really wish this had been in 3D. With all the sparks and water droplets and mud and broken pieces of machinery flying everywhere it could have been a real knockout with a decent conversion.

Watched it a few hours ago and while enjoyable it comes down to the same usual concept of storytelling we've seen hundreds of times before and one that usually always tends to have those dramatic clichéd endings where the protagonist dramatically encourages someone to not give up for their life. The action and set pieces are well done for the most part and quite intense in certain moments.

I really liked John Malkovich in this. I think he was by far the most memorable and most interesting character.

Overall, I give this movie a 4 out of 5.

Went to it and loved it. Don't really care for Wahlberg, but Dylan O'Brien, Kate Hudson, and Gina Rodriguez, who I all love, were great.

Only real main issue was the action was so close-up most of the time and shaky.

Also, theatre was 80% crowded (all the bottom seats below the screen were empty though) and I sat next to this older man who said random things here and then. "Oh shit", "Get out of there!!!", etc.

I have a feeling that Berg isn't a fan of 3D. Battleship was tailor made for the format with so many awesome shots that would've looked spectacular in 3D but he didn't give us a 3D version.

This has gotten good reviews overall, with critics calling it "highly entertaining". I've become so jaded by "action" films of late that it didn't occur to me this could actually be a fun thriller. Action films today are nothing like they were even 15 years ago, with many films wanting to "transcend" the genre by incorporating highbrow drama with quick edits and shaky camerawork. After everyone does it, it just becomes tedious at best. Going to check this out next weekend and hope that the critics (and my instinct) don't let me down.

I really wish that he would stop posting their videos. I checked them out once, and you hit the nail on the head, annoying as all hell.

I agree with this. Personally I don't like Peter Berg's directing when it comes to action films and with this one most of the action is so up close you can't make out most of whats happening.

Thumbs up

well, it Was an OIL RIG Exploding, so did anyone really expect Smooth filmed scenes while all hell is breaking loose, explosions going off, etc.?

aside from one (minor) quibble, it was an enjoyable, well-made film to me. that quibble was, the
[Show spoiler]movie takes an Hour almost before the Sh!t hits the fan, then is over within 30-35 minutes (maybe that's what happened in real-time, if anyone knows... )
.

still, I'm giving it 4/5-Stars. Saw it IMAX, looked great, sound was tremendous, of course.

The production budget is 110 million, did you add marketing to get this number?

[Show spoiler]1 hour and 37 minutes of an oil rig explosion?

The story exposition was the best thing about this movie to be honest and the strongest aspect of it. After the
[Show spoiler]explosion occurred and the "don't give up and jump for your live" ending everything just went as generic as one could expect.

well of course we wouldn't get
[Show spoiler]90+ minutes of it, but it seemed to happen so late in the film and last just 30 minutes, it kind of seemed to end out of nowhere, and yes, I'm pretty sure such disasters wouldn't last hours like others (tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc.)

The $110 million is what Lionsgate clams to have spent after tax rebates are removed. $156 million is the "raw" number of what it actually cost to make the film.

The first trailer made it seem like creatures would be trying to come out of the ocean or something. Not shock this movie is not doing well. With some monsters in it, the movie might have done better.

This makes me think you missed completely what this film is about.

People might have heard or found out it was just another disaster movie & just stayed home. Looking at the first trailer, did make it seem like some type of monsters would be trying to come out of the pipes to get them or something.
