Poya: 2020 is the colour gamut that's part of the UHD Blu spec, it's in there from the beginning so other players will do the same thing. But it will be used as more of a 'container' for the wealth of P3 grades that movies are already mastered in, and most current displays can't even cover all of P3 never mind 2020, so I don't think we'll get true 2020 masters on a widespread scale for a while yet.

As for 4:4:4, it's sounds fancy but it's doing nothing more than what current BD players can do: upsample the 4:2:0 that's on the disc into 4:4:4 (which is what ALL displays do when they process such a signal anyway). It can't add what isn't there, just make the process as error-free as possible, and although it may be better than what the built-in processing on the TV can do on a few test patterns, I doubt it'll make a difference to real world viewing.

And no, there's no significance to the DV thing IMO. Note that they didn't actually say that the clips themselves were encoded with DV, as both Sony and Warners have announced they're using Dolby's HDR suite for mastering titles but not, it seems, for actually encoding them as such on UHD Blu.

Still, they say that the player can support up to 10,000 nits brightness which is the upper limit of DV, so the Panny could have the right hardware for DV (Panasonic's bespoke chippery) but not the firmware, which *may* come in due course.

Not all discs support Dolby vision either, there is more than one HDR solution

Seeing as they rarely convert currencies and just change the symbol when it comes to setting UK prices, that'll probably be £899 for the Britishers. Yowch. If it comes in at £500 or £600 I'll genuinely consider buying it, but the better part of a grand is too rich for my blood.

Yeah, I know you're a Sony man. I've had BD players from Samsung, Sony, Oppo and Philips over the years (with a terrific multi-region Pioneer being my DVD player back in the pre-HD days) but I've never had a better Blu-ray disc spinner than a Panny with a Uniphier chip.

That's why I'll seriously consider their UHD Blu player, but that said: if I was offered the Samsung for the equivalent price that the Yanks are getting it ($399 is about £280, why don't we round it off to £300) then I'd buy it as a stop gap despite my reservations about the brand. If I could import one for £350 all in I'd probably consider that too.

[edit] My first DVHS, HD DVD and Blu-ray players were all US imports so if I could get the Sammy for a half-sensible price I'd keep that streak going.

I am tempted to the Samsung if the price is good.
But j do worry about cheaping out since I didn't on the TV.
It may come down to reviews from people I trust

"As for Ultra HD Blu-ray player support for Dolby Vision: What we know now is that Dolby is opening up its licensing kits for Dolby Vision-enabled Blu-ray players in July 2016, so any players introduced before then (the aforementioned Samsung and Philips units, specifically) will not be compatible — at least not when introduced. Whether Panasonic’s forthcoming player will be remains to be seen, as no release date has been issued yet, and Panasonic will neither confirm nor deny compatibility. However, Dolby did point out to Digital Trends that Panasonic was the first to announce plans to produce a Dolby Vision-enabled player.

In fact I'm having trouble sleeping lately, I just can't stop thinking about connecting my Samsung 4K BD player to our LG Signature Series G6 OLED TV and in our dedicated Sony 4K Atmos theater. My expectations are very very high.

The big challenge is getting the displays calibrated for PQ digital "gamma", P3 color and HDR. I know the best guys working on this so hopefully we'll be soon speaking about discussing how to get our a/v systems set-up so we can see color fidelity and contrast and detail like never before. My dream is about to become reality!
