biggest reason?

almost all of the industry awards disqualify any movie that releases on home video or VOD prior to the theater run

Theaters are also still MUCH MUCH MUCH better money makers for the overwhelming majority of movies that get a theater release

I also disagree with the theater experience being horrible. You need to go to better theaters.

I agree with everything you said except this. It isn't practical or easy to just pick a "better theater". Not everyone has boatloads of theaters around them. I personally have 3 theaters around me and all pretty much suck. I just go to the local Cinemark because it sucks the least. There is a nice upper scale theater opening here soon with real food and nice recliners, but until than I've just had crappy theaters. We can't all have an Alamo Drafthouse and other nice theaters around us.

That new upper scale theater will have alcohol which excites me the most because that means the age will be 21 plus. Almost ALWAYS it is the damn teenagers that ruin my movie experience.

With UHD they are already building that into the equation, with online activation they can Control when it can be played.

If it's from a boutique label or a limited edition, then I usually preorder them or get them on release date. A lot of the smaller boutique labels don't typically have frequent sales and used prices are only a couple bucks less than their going price most of the time. The exception is Criterion as I only buy those during their 50% sales or flash sales.

As for catalog/major studio releases, I don't tend to buy those until way after release date as you can usually find those for dirt cheap after awhile.
