BAAHUBALI is a "fake" 4K or "near" 4K but not true, native, UHD 4K

according to imdb.com, BAAHUBALI technical specs

Quote:
Cinematographic Process ARRIRAW (2.8K) (3.4K) (source format)
Digital Intermediate (4K) (master format)
That 4K DI is 'upconverted' 2.8K and 3.4K Digital Camera pixels to pseudo 4K.

SULTAN is all over the place. Some scenes shot anamorphic. Some scenes 4K digital. Most of the film shot digitally in 2.8K or 3.4K at the most using anamorphic film. Whole film can never ever be true 4K again.

My guess for Bollywood's 1st 4K UHD with HDR and DOLBY ATMOS is still 2014 SHOLAY re-release. Once the litigations are completely resolved in next few years, I can see big foreign company releasing SHOLAY 4K UHD with HDR after fresh re-scanned 4K DI as 4k UHD HDR BRD official debut in India.

Cannot guess which south film will release a "true" 4K UHD HDR BRD with ATMOS.

^The list of movies in that chat is intriguing purely in terms of how impractical it seems that someone is funding 4K restorations of movies like Amar Prem and Navrang which have very little value with today's customer base. Also they are 4:3 ratio movies with mono soundtracks, and we've seen what companies like Shame-aroo do to vintage movie blu-rays.

Anyway, if Sholay gets even a decent 1080p release of the theatrical cut (with no aggressive DNR, no 3D version CG crap and a respectful recreation of the 6-track stereophonic sound or at least a lossless mono), I'll be happy to put my money in.

Call me skeptical and a pessimist but from that email screenshot why do i get the feeling that he is talking only about scanning in 4K (negatives) and nowhere about actually authoring a 4K blu ray disc. I am interpreting this as being done for a 1080p Blu ray disc which is also a big enough deal. At bare minimum I Just wish none of this hard work goes into streaming services or else its a moot point.

I’ve spoken to the guy on a few occasions and they do indeed intend to release it on blu. They’re planning a proper premium-like edition. Possibly a steelbook, but failing which at the very least a fullslip scanavo with goodies. But as mentioned in the mail, there are a few hurdles, such as the inclusion of Shivay in the deal, that they’re still trying to overcome.

they are doing Dolby vision which suggests that there will be a bluray and most likely in 4k

Thanks for clarifying. Well then lets hope for the best. Honestly though this sounds too good to be true

I feel if a Bollywood movie might get a 4k release, it would be The Lunchbox.

Sony pictures Classics 4k collection alot of foreign movies. If they do a volume 2, there could be a chance to see The Lunchbox being the first 4K Bollywood release in North America

I can't say with confidence, but I doubt it. The film made a brief splash at that time, but I think most people have forgotten Lunchbox by now. Also, it never won any of the major international film awards.

And the film was a digital shoot with a 2K intermediate. Of course you have UHD's even of such DI's, but again this may not be a priority release.

I tried to license Sholay a couple of years ago but it went nowhere.

A 2K DI doesn't matter. If alit of South Asians ask for Lunchbox to be released in a SPC Vol2, it will happen. There were alot of foreign movies in Volume 1. It can possibly happen if ppl lobby for it.
