EDIT: Yip, found Sam Mendes quote I referenced above and that's exactly what he said after Skyfall:

See that just proves that he only came back for a big paycheck. It really shows in his direction of spectre

I'm not saying it has to be camp, just that I'm done with all the family/relationship/he's washed up stuff for Bond. Heck, the ending to Spectre is almost perfect in that way, it could be seen as the coda to that set of films,

Yes, yes, yes! I love what they've done with Craig and rejuvenating the franchise but I would love just a simple old, James Bond saves the world adventure. I haven't actually seen SPECTRE yet (Blu-ray has arrived though), but I heard about the ending and a potential OHMSS/DAF type follow up film so we might not be done with blinkin' character development yet! How dare they!

People are conflating things unnecessarily: The "slash my wrists" comment was just a response to how he was feeling at that moment, coming off what was a difficult, exhausting and literally injurious shoot. It was a humorous line, taken out of context.

As I've said before, Craig and Mendes both went into SPECTRE with the plan that it would be their last Bond movie, both together and individually. This plan is fairly evident from the film itself, in which Bond pretty much retires and drives off into the sunset with his new love. Why on earth would they do that if leaving wasn't the plan at the time?

Craig has softened his stance on that recently and I'm not sure why. It may be to drive his fee up to a point where he can't sensibly refuse; or it may be just that the Bond role is a hard one to give up - all that attention may be annoying but it has its (huge) upsides too. And there's not a lot of evidence so far that audiences are as enthusiastic about Craig outside of the Bond role.

But the reason I'm fairly certain he won't be back is simple: Family. That's where the real pressure to quit is coming from, trust me, but that's not something you'll read about in the papers.

One other thing: It's unfair to blame SPECTRE solely on the writers. The screenplays for the Bond movies are - and have always been - written by committee and the writers are way down the pecking order. Craig himself has had a huge amount of input into the screenplays, which is NOT, imo, a good idea.

To be fair though, people do get incredibly burnt out after huge projects, particularly creative ones. As I said above, I haven't seen SPECTRE yet, but I hear it's more the writing, not the direction itself that's the problem. A bit like Prometheus by the sound of it. But less black goo and caesareans.

I'm ready for Tom Hardy, if Craig does another one, Hardy will be too old to start by that point.

Tom Hardy? No thanks. Luke Evans gets my vote.

I don't doubt that it was planned as being their last Bond movie, but I guess the ending leaves it pretty open with what direction they can go. Do a DAF type follow up, or a new stand alone Craig film, or a recast/reboot. Craig's said before he's willing to do it for as long as he's wanted so who knows. But there's obviously a lot that goes on behind the scenes, as you point out, that changes things.

Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender are never gonna happen, I dunno why people keep talking about them. Idris Elba also won't, but only because he'll be too old by the time Craig's done. Luke Evans or Dan Stevens, I say.

Heck, the most character development Roger Moore got was when he made that quiche in A View to a Kill! And did anyone complain? No. It did look good though, to be fair.

Haha, it just cracked me up the last time I watched it. It's a pretty time consuming dish to just knock up, considering the other issues he had to deal with at the time. A simple omelette would have sufficed, surely? Sheesh, you could do a series, "Cooking with Bond!" Good old Rog!

Here is Michael G.Wilson on the matter:

Producer Michael G Wilson confirmed on Friday they expect to have Craig for a fifth time, saying: “We think we’ve got him but we don’t have a contract.”

http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/d...e-more-6790760

And again, from the Hollywood Reporter:

GALLOWAY: I know. But do you have a contract with Daniel to do another picture?

WILSON: No, we don’t have a contract.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...l-craig-837655

And Craig himself said on a TV interview that there was no contract, though I can't remember what that was to find it. But can we please stop peddling the "contract" myth. Craig may or may not do another movie but he is NOT contractually obliged to do so.
This is pretty interesting because when Skyfall came out, it was indeed reported that Eon locked Craig in for two additional films. Talking earlier to a UK paper, Craig said he had one more in his contract after Spectre but that he wouldn't speculate if he'd play the role after that.

I agree. But It's too serious now, not like the old Sean Connery or Roger Moore comedy shtick!

He's only two years younger than Hardy. Bordering on being too old as well if Craig does another Bond.

Hardy and Fassbender are way too famous already to do Bond, and the same could likely be said for Elba now as well. They should stay true to form and go with somebody who is known but not well known, probably somebody whose name doesn't pop up when you're thinking about it.
