So what is 3D about it ?

I really don't get studios with 3D anymore. Why not go all out like Avatar, Turtles movies, Hercules with Rock, witch hunters ect.. pop outs and things sticking out the screen is what people want in 3D not something you don't even know you are watching 2D or 3D

I see what you mean. But some people would complain that it's a gimmick. You know it's 3D when it's not flat. There should be a mix of pop and depth.

Yep both pop out and depth. Not just depth. This is what kills 3D, people feel like its watching 2D with only depth. There SHOULD be stuff coming at your face. That is what 3D is about. Every 3D movie should feel like Avatar. Cameron know what 3D is.

Thumbs up

3D Previews:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 3D: Strong 3D, wow.
Pirates of the Caribbean 2017 3D: Low Medium 3D. Okay.
Spider-Man Homecoming 3D: Medium with some strong 3D. Very nice.
Boss Baby (Dreamworks) 3D: Medium with some hints of strong 3D.

Star Wars Story: Rogue One 3D:

3D Layers: 7/10. Mostly low medium to medium 3D layers. Final act, stronger 3D that goes to 8/10.
3D Creativity: 4/10. This was filmed with 2D in mind, cut off framing of heads, etc.
3D Pop Out count: 2/10. At the end, there's a blurry gun sticking out, etc.
3D Overall: 8/10 rounded up thanks to the lengthy final act's stronger 3D.

Stereo D did a nice job on this conversion, but it's a step down from the 3D layering of Force Awakens until just before the final act when we see Darth Vader's first appearance (stronger 3D). Before that, the 3D is mostly medium layered 3D and while nice, unremarkable. It's good 3D and 3D fans will appreciate it, though pop out fans and those looking for all strong 3D will be disappointed till the final act.

The movie was starting as a 7/10 till the Death Star strikes its first test, and then after certain events, ends a 9/10 for me. Great Star Wars movie even though I didn't know these characters like the classic ones. I'm a big fan of Force Awakens too, but this turned out really well IMO, with good character moments, tons of action and Star Wars throughout. Darth Vader, awesome.
Cassian was my favorite hero character.

I'm no expert on 3D (or anything for that matter), but it seemed very weak in this. The movie itself was phenomenal, just found the 3d to be weak.
3D previews
Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Strong 3D, with great depth
Boss Baby: Medium to strong 3D
Pirates of the Caribbean: Weak to mild 3d
Spider-Man Homecoming: Medium 3D

Compared to much stronger 3D efforts, this can't compete, though the last act was an improvement. What did you think of the 3D in Force Awakens? To me, that was better than the 3D of Rogue One.

UGH dissapointing 3D reviews on this. CRAP!! Still getting the 3D Blu-Ray but that the 3D is more dissapointing than last years Star Wars movie. That is just not good enough!!

Glad to hear Guardians and Spidey has good 3D

The depth can be just as gimmicky looking to me. Sometimes it's like looking at things through binoculars, the continuity is sometimes lost even if it looks cool at times. The pop, however, hurts some peoples' eyes. I just wish there were some knobs on my tv to adjust it to my liking

Saw this last night on opening night and I thought the movie was great. The action was thrilling and really well done and the fan service was really tasteful and intriguing. The 3d was also pretty good too with mostly medium layers and some really neat GoPro style X-Wing shots. Not as good as Force Awakens 3d but it still added to it

This is not mild 3D IMO, but it's not exciting 3D either till things take off in the final act with high medium to strong 3D. It's still worth checking out in 3D.

Just watched this tonight and I thought the 3d was not very good compared to TFA. It was mostly medium depth with no pop outs. The movie was ok but the kids fell asleep about half way through but they liked TFA since it had better characters.

Yeah the first half was very boring but it did pick up about the last 30 mintutes. I asked the kids if they remembered any of the characters and the only one they could was the grey robot lol.

Except for IMAX 3D, I think a lot of 3D movies look better at home

Just got back:

Planet of the Apes, Pirates, Transformers, all seemed decent enough.
GOTG 2 - Holy Sh*t!!! 3D was awesome.
Wish we would have gotten Spiderman.

As for Star Wars, I really enjoyed it, there were some scenes that reminded me of The Walk when they are looking down. The 3D was not a disappointment to me and added to the movie. The story was good, I just thought they hit a home run here. They are 2 for 2 with the new Star Wars movies, getting them away from Lucas was a great thing.

Must see & day one buy.

Can anyone comment on the Imax 3D presentation? Is there any aspect ratio change, or breaking through letterbox bars?

I may just give this one a pass for the time being. Probably still be playing in the new year.

Seeing this in Lie-Max 3D tomorrow. Hoping to see Apes, Transformers, and possibly Skull Island trailers in 3D. I'll be looking out for the 3D more this time. My initial viewing was more focused on the film, and I saw it in standard 3D.

It's a great movie, if you're a Star Wars fan I'd definitely go see it.

As far as the 3D went I thought it was ok. I didn't really notice it most of the time but the depth felt realistic enough and some shots did look nice. In IMAX 3D there were no aspect ratio changes or breakouts.

Now that i have seen it i would say the 3D is very solid. Can't wait to own this fantastic movie on 3D Blu-Ray.

The 3D was good would give it 3.5/5. The depth is absolutely breathtaking it really is like looking out a Window in the scenes with landscapes, planets, space battle, Ground battles. It stunning. We have objects and people sticking out the screen in most scenes. The movie is never flat. Pop outs is where its really missing something. I think there is 2 or 3 scenes where there is some good pop out effect. Thats to little do my taste. But overall after reading some 3D reviews here on it. I was pleasantly surprised. Its definitely a movie that really comes alive in 3D with how good the depth is on it. Would never watch it in 2D over the 3D.

Just got back from seeing this, but sadly not in 3D. I loved every minute of it. I will just have to wait for the Blu-ray to see it in 3D. Already preordered the Steelbook from Zavvi.
