They did the same for X-Men: Days of Future Past's Rogue Cut.

Can anyone clarify for me if the non-region coding in UHD is true?

They're all region free, it's part of the spec.

Normally I would prefer the 3D edition of a Native 3D movie with a 2k DI over a mostly upconverted UHD edition but with no 3D edition of this extended cut I think I will go with the UHD edition here to get the extended cut and expanded extras. I presently don't own The Martian on disc and all the other benefits of this release outweigh the theatrical editions 1080p 3D. Though if a Blu-Ray 3D was available for the extended cut that would be the version I would choose

Yep, I've been waiting on buying the Martian (not just on UHD but in general) because of the inevitable array of awesome extras that the then-rumoured extended edition would have. In CDL we trust.

(It's a shame Prometheus already has a super-duper set of extras, I'm dying to see an extended cut of that movie and having the extras already kinda cuts down on the double-dip opportunity. Still, Fox will need a hook to get UHD buyers interested so that's where an extended cut could still present a juicy opportunity.)

I agree, I thought this movie was long enough as it is. Also, I got tired of his video reports while he's eating. He had all the time in the world, couldn't he have finished eating before recording his reports?

What is the significance of 10 extra minutes? Is it going to alter the story in any way? Seems like a waste of time releasing this otherwise.

Agreed. It's probably different alternate shots of action sequences merged throughout the film totaling 10 minutes. In a few years its the "Director's Cut" which will include 30 additional minutes or something like that. Since it's Ridley Scott I could believe there is some additional footage left for future dips.

It's not going to alter the story in any big way, but flesh out some details. Its not like the new cut is the only thing different about this release.. It has a commentary track, and a few hours of new extras. The commentary track alone is worth it for me personally.

It comes with deleted scenes, so yeah there's extra stuff.

Default The Martian EXTENDED EDITION UHD

I thought The Martian was utterly abysmal.

I keep repeating this but Alien (already mastered in 4K) or Prometheus deserved their UHD announcement instead of this.
This in a way is a pointless re-release.

I am starting to wonder if we'll get any non-HDR 4K titles? It sounds like HDR is such a strong selling point that new transfers will need to be done with HDR (regarding catalogs)?

I don't really see non-HDR in the cards. It's not like it sounds like a terribly expensive process. I mean it couldn't be anywhere near a 3D conversion cost, and seeing how most people will not see the benefits of higher resolution alone on smaller screen (60" or smaller), then HDR really is THE selling factor in this format.

I'm beginning to get tired of how they release Ultimate and Extended editions of movies months after their initial BD release.

If 7.1 channels 96kHz/24bits is good sound.

Dolby Atmos limit 48kHz/24bits in 11.2 channels.
