The Martian was shot in 3D, and they are ditching 3D for the extended version??? Amazing Fox!!!

Normally I would prefer the 3D edition of a Native 3D movie with a 2k DI over a mostly upconverted UHD edition but with no 3D edition of this extended cut I think I will go with the UHD edition here to get the extended cut and expanded extras. I presently don't own The Martian on disc and all the other benefits of this release outweigh the theatrical editions 1080p 3D. Though if a Blu-Ray 3D was available for the extended cut that would be the version I would choose

Still, Fox will need a hook to get UHD buyers interested so that's where an extended cut could still present a juicy opportunity.) |

Agreed. It's probably different alternate shots of action sequences merged throughout the film totaling 10 minutes. In a few years its the "Director's Cut" which will include 30 additional minutes or something like that. Since it's Ridley Scott I could believe there is some additional footage left for future dips.

It's not going to alter the story in any big way, but flesh out some details. Its not like the new cut is the only thing different about this release.. It has a commentary track, and a few hours of new extras. The commentary track alone is worth it for me personally.

I am starting to wonder if we'll get any non-HDR 4K titles? It sounds like HDR is such a strong selling point that new transfers will need to be done with HDR (regarding catalogs)?

I don't really see non-HDR in the cards. It's not like it sounds like a terribly expensive process. I mean it couldn't be anywhere near a 3D conversion cost, and seeing how most people will not see the benefits of higher resolution alone on smaller screen (60" or smaller), then HDR really is THE selling factor in this format.
