Disney is definitely a big proponent of DV, so I would assume that's why they're taking their sweet time with UHD Blu-ray support. The time tables for release seem to match up fairly closely with the availability of DV discs and player products (and metadata supported version 2 of DV displays). Disney tends to start releasing first quarter discs around late February. Sony is having internal struggles because they HDR grade in DV and they created the mastering software for DV on UHD Blu-ray, but their TV's don't currently support it. Perhaps because in that schizo company the right hand (the studio division) doesn't know what the left hand (the consumer division) is doing. One possible reason why the Playstation "Pro" console doesn't have a UHD Blu-ray drive. Last edited by FilmFreakosaurus; 09-14-2016 at 04:02 PM. |

Lol no. Nothing changes. Dolby vision and regular hdr are on the same disc, its a dual layer. Whichever hdr your tv supports will automatically play. If you have Dolby Vision, it will automatically override regular hdr. |

But not all studios may jump on the Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray bandwagon, so the answer is: it depends.

I believe that Dolby Vision is the odds-on favorite to win the "dynamic HDR on disc" format war, since Disney's support is huge and that Dolby Vision adds value just by virtue of its name. Plus I think that Warner and Sony movie division support it and what other studios?
The above would seem to have more clout than Fox, Samsung and Sony TV division. Last edited by bruceames; 09-14-2016 at 04:34 PM. |

Last night, I A/B'ed my Creed HDR10 disc with DV streaming on Vudu, and I think DV easily won that contest despite having lower bitrates. Makes me think this whole UHD disc format launch might be a tad premature. Last edited by bferr1972; 09-14-2016 at 04:38 PM. |

Hopefully by next year we'll get more widespread support on DV and that includes Sony and Samsung (but I highly doubt it). |

Dolby Vision works kind of like Dolby Atmos. You have the base Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track. But if you have compatible hardware, you will get Dolby Atmos.
Dolby Vision will be quite similar. HDR10 is the base. And if you have it, Dolby Vision will kick in. Perhaps Disney is preparing a "Dolby Cinema" Ultra HD Blu-rays. One packaged with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos in one disc for the Ultimate home theater experience. Side question, UHD BD only supports TL-100GB discs, yes? QL BDXL 128GB is not part of the approved spec? |

This appears to be the case with "Oblivion" two separate masters but with the DV being the digital download edition

Im not sure what your point is. Nothing changes with disc. I couldn't care less about vudu. We're talking about discs for the posters confused about physical content. Last edited by ray0414; 09-14-2016 at 05:38 PM. |

UHD Blu-ray can be a 50, 66, or 100 GB stamped disc. |

my point is, why is Universal allowing purchasers of the disc to view a 'Dolby' color graded version that is a separate master and quite possibly a superior pass through than Universal's HDR version? That's dumb and embarrassing on Universal's part. The disc version should be the superior edition.
