Moderately engaging sounds fine to me, I could do with something that's disposable and quiet in a season of films that are disposable and loud.

Thank you, Foggy!

I find it puzzling how people can watch and enjoy the same superhero film regurgitated in theaters year after year, good or bad reviews notwithstanding, but then find something like Money Monster only "moderately engaging." Baffling.

It isn't "people" calling Money Monster "moderately engaging," it's the Hollywood Reporter. And it's more than possible for "people" to enjoy big comic-book movies and mid-budget projects as well. But with the rising cost of going to the movies, people are (wisely IMHO) increasingly choosing to see the big movies theatrically and the smaller movies at home. And the receipts reflect that.

So American Honey is getting a lot of love, with comparisons to Wim Wenders, I've got a feeling that might be the award winner come the end of the festival.

The BFG is getting mixed-but-positive reviews, sounds like a minor film from Spielberg. The Handmaiden is apparently rather campy, so it seems like another Stoker sort of film, a bit indulgent and a bit daft, so it depends on how much you like Chan-Wook's style. The new Nicholas Cage film is supposed to be quite fun as well, which is good because I'm desperate for a new good Nicholas Cage film.

Well, I would be very surprised if a British-American film won the Palm d'Or this year, especially one starring Shia LaBeouf. The last American film to win the Palm d'Or was The Tree of Life in 2011 and the last British film was The Wind That Shakes the Barley in 2006. I mean, it would be great if it did, considering it was directed by Andrea Arnold, 1 of 3 female directors in the competition, but I think she faces heavy competition from other films this year.

Figured as much. Bit of an odd choice for him, he hasn't really done a movie like this since Hook or ET.

Jim Jarmusch's latest is getting a lot of love. People saying it's Driver's best performance.

From the Land of the Moon (Marion Cotillard's film) seems be taking a lot of the heat, seems to be the big blunder of the festival thus far.

Now showing, Loving press conference.

Quote:
“The Crime of Being Married.” So read the headline that accompanied photos of Richard Loving, a Southern “white trash” construction worker, and his African-American wife Mildred in the pages of Life magazine. One day — maybe today — audiences will sit down to watch Jeff Nichols’ “Loving,” which goes nearly the entire first reel before explaining that mixed-race marriages were illegal in Virginia at the time, and they’ll be surprised to learn what the crime in question was, having already observed and accepted the on-screen couple without the blinders of racial prejudice.

It is from this position of relative enlightenment that Nichols approaches the true story of “the Loving couple,” a film of utmost sensitivity, but not nearly enough outrage, secure in its position vis-à-vis the bigotry that dominated before America’s Civil Rights revolution. Like the plaintiffs in the Supreme Court case that identified marriage as an inherent human right, “Loving” is a humble, soft-spoken film, in which no one so much as raises his voice or weeps in the face of undeniable injustice. Though it will inevitably factor heavily in end-of-year Oscar conversations, Nichols’ film is seemingly less interested in its own glory than in representing what’s right, and though it features two of the best American performances in years, from Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga (neither of whom are American, hailing from Australia and Ethiopia, respectively), it’s emotional impact derives precisely from how understated they are. Jarmusch can do no wrong. The guy has never made a bad film per say. His films are full of interesting ideas and themes. I'm glad it sounda like Paterson is bucking that trend.

I've heard it compared ever so slightly to Dog Day Afternoon but I'm not expecting it to be that good.

Haven't been watching the stream today. Earlier the English stream wasn't having any English translation, so it was pointless to watch the panel.

Oooh! Now they are showing the press conference for Staying Vertical (Rester Vertical) by Alain Guiraudie (dir: Stranger by the Lake). I would love to know what they are saying, but I'm still at work and can't turn on the volume.

Wow! Thank you. That is very nice of you to offer to do that. But, it's really not that important. Thanks again!

No problem, bud . The offer stands. I do hate it when they dub these interviews...

"Moderately engaging" is a perfect description of Money Monster. It's a competent, unspectacular, "thriller," that is worth one watch.
