Well I had it on my list so obviously I think it should count. It's not based on a comic book technically, but I think it fits the spirit of the whole poll (type of superhero, references to comic books)

I'd like to include Unbreakable

I'm also for films like unbreakable otherwise I won't be able to fill my list with titles I rate better than average.

That was a challenge, primarily because I haven't seen that many amazing comic book films. I've only seen two films in the MCU - neither of which made this list - and I have a hard-on for Batman, so various Batflicks, both live-action and animated, dominate the list. I'm also reminded how much I need to see Dredd.

Didn't know this! Another great title I'll be able to add. I like this thread because I'm realizing how many more comic/super hero/etc titles there are.

I have opened the options up to include films based around superheroes as well, even if they didn't necessary start in comics. So films like Unbreakable, Chronicle, Hancock, Blankman, Meteor Man, etc. can now be included!

Great idea... but now I have to start my list over.

(And did I miss it, or has nobody mentioned Constantine yet?)

1) Spider-man 2: the only Spidey movie to perfectly juggle what it means to be Peter Parker AND Spider-man.

2) Akira: Made and completed during its Manga initial run, which featured delays in its publishing as Otomo was busy directing the adaption. Movie is a different beast, than the Manga

3) Batman: The Dark Knight Returns- based on the prestige format series from 1986, which would not only serve as a re-introduction to the character for many who thought he was still a version of 60's campy, TV show. True fans knew this was not true for a decade or so, but Miller reinvigorated the character, and then for the next fifteen years, other authors copied and failed to have as much an impact as Miller.

4) Captain America: The First Avenger

5) Watchmen Ultimate Cut: 1986's OTHER big release from DC, which would cement with fans, no other author quite has the same understanding of what makes Super Hero comics, and comic books in general work, other than the legendary Brit Alan Moore.

6) X2: X-Men United
7) Batman Begins
8) Superman
9) Iron Man
10) Frank Miller's Sin City

11) Captain America: The Winter Soldier
12) Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
13) Kingsmen: The Secret Service
14) 300

15) 30 Days of Night: a truly great adaption of the source material, and it made money. Followed by a horrible direct to DVD sequel. Why?!?!?!

16) All Star Superman
17) The Adventures of Tin Tin

18) The Crow: Posthumously making a superstar out of Brandon Lee, who died in a mysteriously tragic way while filming. This movie also showed that good R Rated comic book movies can make money.

19) Kick @$$

20) Snowpiercer: Brilliant adaption of a French graphic novel, 30 years in the making. Interesting characters abound in this cold post apocalyptic story...

21) V for Vendetta
22) Guardians of the Galaxy

23) Deadpool: the little engine that wasn't, then all of a sudden was. An R Rated comic book blockbuster, on a underrated, but not to his die hard fans, character, that even has heart. Well, twisted that is.

24) Dredd: one of the most underrated comic adaptions, and frustratingly little seen gems, that has found an audience on home video. Not to be confused with a poorly made Stallone movie from twenty years prior.

25) Big Hero 6: quite possibly the most loosely based of adaptions from the source material, but never the less an engaging, well made movie.

1 batman begins. top spot because i'm a batman fan and this restarted a great franchise. this was my first blu-ray.

2 iron man. easily my favorite marvel movie. robert downey jr's role as iron man might be my favorite out of everything on this list.

3 batman 1989. this was the first superhero movie that i loved. dark and serious and so different from superman or any of the other few comic movies that were out at the time. being a batman comic lover i saw this on opening day.

4 dark knight. more of everything that made batman begins so great. hard to measure up to jack nicholson's joker but heath ledger's is just as good.

5 guardians of the galaxy. i never read the comic series so i waited a bit before watching it and im so sorry i did. i couldnt believe how much i liked this. very different from the classic super hero characters with way more comedy which doesnt work for just any comic book movies but it definitely works here.

6 batman returns. more of everything that made batman 1989 so great. i rank the first one slightly higher but this is just as good with 2 great villians, more action and the christmas setting.

7 spider-man 2002. x-men was good but i thought this was the first movie where marvel nailed it. the remake that came 10 years later is not nearly as good as this. this movie is just fun. tobey mcguire is the perfect spider-man and i love willem defoe as green goblin.

8 avengers. i didnt think throwing all the different characters into one movie would work but i was wrong. so much action in this one i think i had to watch it several times before i could pick up everything that was going on near the end. mark ruffalo is maybe my favorite actor to play hulk.

9 deadpool. this is another that surprised me because i had never read this character's comics. very different from the other super hero movies. more humor by far and more adult stuff.

10 x-men first class. the retro stuff works for me as this is my favorite of the x-men series. it's hard to top ian mckellen, patrick stewart and the gang but the new guys give great performances.

11 thor. this one surprised me because i'm not the biggest thor fan, but i love the ensemble cast with natalie portman and anthony hopkins. i think stan lee trying to move the hammer is my favorite of all his appearances.

12 captain america. very cool and different retro look here. i didnt get into this one as much at first but it grew on me with repeat viewings. love hugo weaving as red skull and cap running into times square.

13 spider-man 2. just as good as the first one but maybe the last great
spider-man movie.

14 x-men 2. a little bit better than the first one. i love the night crawler in the white house and magneto prison escape scenes.

15 x-men. marvel's first good super hero movie. in fact, the first good super hero movie since 1992's batman returns. thank this movie for all those that followed as if it had failed, we might not be making this list today.

16 antman. another that snuck up on me because i had never read any comics with him. its hard for me to say i like the humorous movies more than the serious ones but the comedy elements here work well. i like corey
stoll more and more with every movie he's in.

17 thor 2. i love the dark elves as well as the goofy science group. thor is becoming my favorite marvel hero right after iron man.

18 avengers age of ultron. hard to top all the action in the first one but this one does it. just like the first avengers, i had to watch this multiple times to pick up everything because there is so much action going on near the end. i dont always like cgi characters so much but ultron is one of my favorite villains.

19 captain america winter soldier. i liked the added role for nick fury. winter soldier is a good villain.

20 x-men days of future past. so cool to see all the x-men from various movies together plus time travel movies are always pretty cool.

21 superman 1978. the first great super hero movie. it feels a bit long now but still great. still the best theme music. love gene hackman as lex and ned beatty as the henchman.

22 iron man 2. not as good the first but still a great super hero movie and robert downey jr as iron man is great as always.

23 amazing spider-man 2. action right from the start and multiple villains. i especially like jamie foxx.

24 the wolverine. one of the favorites from x-men gets a solo movie for the second time. much better than the first. silver samurai was a cool villain.

25 incredible hulk 2008. the cgi used for hulk is much better than the previous try.

The thing I love about Guardians of the Galaxy is that it has that wonderful 80s feel-good blockbuster feel. It feels like a modern Back to the Future, only with a space setting instead of time travel.

This was harder than I thought. I knew what would take the first spot, but deciding on the order of the rest was a challenge to say the least. My mind went blank several times while making this list, and I ran out of titles to include near the end so I threw in a few of my favorite animated titles that I think everyone should watch at least once.
  1. Superman: the Movie (1978)
  2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
  3. X-Men: Days of Future Past (2015)
  4. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
  5. Batman Begins (2005)
  6. The Wolverine (2013)
  7. Batman v Superman (2016)
  8. X2: X-Men United (2003)
  9. The Avengers (2012)
  10. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  11. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
  12. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II (1991)
  13. Superman II (1980)
  14. The Punisher (1989)
  15. X-Men (2000)
  16. Swamp Thing (1982)
  17. The Phantom (1996)
  18. Incredible Hulk (2008)
  19. Blade II (2001)
  20. Batman (1966)
  21. Justice League: Doom
  22. Batman Under the Red Hood
  23. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
  24. Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
  25. The Shadow (1994)
