Just got done viewing this in Real 3D, I would consider it medium 3D with a few shots of upper medium. You get some debris flying out at you on ocassion and a decent flare burst scene. My favorite shots consisted of a
[Show spoiler]propeller being flung around by Kong on a chain
. Depth is pretty well done and in some instances gives Kong a tangible size to the area.
As usual there's scenes they could have really pushed it but didn't.
3D score 3.75/ 5

The movie was alright, lots of characters so not really much depth to them. Tom and Brie I felt had a underwhelming amount of screen bravado. John C was great and really elevated the film. Sam Jackson was fine and played his role well.
The movie just lacked originality and well written dialogue for the most part. There's several eye rolling scenes that were suppose to be impact full but really came across cringe worthy. The soldier who out of nowhere decides
[Show spoiler]I'm going to blow myself up with grenades, gets swatted to a cliff wall like a fly. It was just a really lame scene in my opinion
.
Movie 3/5
Dolby Atmos track was very good, and I highly recommend seeing it with this audio format.
Audio 4.5/5

Helpful 3D review, thanks a lot 1blufan. I'll know to temper my expectations of the 3D.

Just a bit of fun.

Make sure your speakers are on for all the sound effects.

That IMAX opening was the best part! Went to IMAX 3D on Friday, and movie was decent, but thin (as expected) on story, plot, characters. Fairly impressive 3D effects, depth, but can't recall pop-outs. Still, will definitely buy 3D Blu-ray.

The 3D trailer for 'Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2' looked great though.

Whoa. They need to put this on the 3D blu-ray disc when it's released!

Thumbs up

Kong: Skull Island 3D:

3D Layers: 8/10 Mostly medium to high medium, some strong 3D.
3D Pop Out Count: 4/10. A little more than a few pop outs.
3D Framing: 9/10. This was really well framed for most shots for 3D layering, keeping the characters in frame and plenty of medium range views of the 3D action. Really well done and focused on 3D depth and layer arrangement.
3D Total: 8/10. A very good 3D conversion for 3D. Day 1 buy on blu ray 3D for me.

Kong: Skull Island the movie was a ton of fun if you like giant monsters from start to finish and lots of action throughout. Monsters included Kong versus the Helicopters, human sized flying dinosaur/birds that would tear apart a human, a giant Long Leg Spider in a bamboo forest (the 3D in the forest with all of the layers of bamboo, great 3D), A giant Cape Buffalo, Kong versus a giant Octopus, and a humongous sized Skull Crawler Lizard that was the main villain. When Kong was splashing in the water, great 3D, increased into the strong 3D range. Scenery was beautiful on the tropical island with rivers, jungles, open fields and more.

The action was beautifully framed, easy to follow and a joy to watch for any fan of giant monsters versus humans with machine guns, explosives and also versus King Kong, who looked impressive in this film, with realistic motion, detail and even a little personality. Really enjoyed it more than I was expecting to.

Saw it last night in Imax 3D. Enjoyed the film and thought the 3D was pretty good. Everything has really been said about it, nothing amazing but not terrible.

Agreed. I only saw the teaser trailer but the 3D in that was already more impressive than Kong's conversion.

In terms of the stereo look of the film, the team were aiming for stereo that was comfortable and easy on the eyes, with some very cool key 3D moments.

[this is from Prime Focus World's website which was recently updated]

Yeah, that pretty much sums up what I saw at IMAX today. I enjoyed this and look forward to seeing it again on 3D Blu-ray.

Just got out from seeing this in 3D. Not too bad of a movie with some primarily medium 3D that seemed on par with Godzilla 2014. I think I was the only one who stayed for the end credits scene. There were quite a few scenes that it was evident that it was filmed with 3D in mind. It could have been so much better with some stronger 3D.

There was only one 3D trailer for this-Ghost in the Shell. About half of the 2D trailers were for 3D movies.

The 2nd Ghost in the Shell 3D trailer looked great in stereo 3D. High medium, some strong 3D in there. March 31st.

Agreed that had this been pushed more, it would be an amazing 3D film. As it is now, it's a very good 3D film.

I thought this was a terrific movie. Great monsters and action scenes, gorgeous scenery, great cast, good pacing, magnificent 3D and some spectacular fx. The only drawback were some not so spectacular fx with some very wonky CGI work throughout. It's frustrating in this regard as there are so many amazing shots peppered with a lot of unconvincing ones.

I'll probably get flamed for this but I actually think the visual fx are better in 2005 Kong. Kong himself certainly looks better and the creature fx are done better in that movie. Whilst I loved all of the design work in Kong Skull Island, it's the execution that lets some of the creatures down, particularly the water buffalo and spider. The skull crawlers are great looking monsters but they should have had back legs considering their size and weight, seems a bit daft just a tail.

For fans of monsters and creature action there is so much to enjoy here and it all moves so quick. I think the movie could have done with slightly longer set pieces on some of the creatures, just to take in the awesome design work.

The cast is a joy, so many actors here to enjoy watching. Characterisation is slight but they get the job done. Hiddleston is perhaps slightly miscast in the adventurer hero role but he does OK. Loved seeing actors like Shea Wiggum (so underrated) and Toby Kebbell take relatively small parts and bring them to life.

Great 3D throughout, layers are amazing, the huge scenery really shines in 3D. Lots going on during the exciting action scenes and the 3D really helps immerse you in the jungle world during and in between all the action.

To be honest there was very little I didn't enjoy about this. As I've said they just needed a bit more time to spruce up some of the visual FX but this will no doubt be in my top 5 by the end of the year if not my favourite movie of the year. I love island and jungle adventures, I love creatures and monsters and I love large scale spectacle so this basically has everything I love in a movie.

Awesome!

LOVED this one in IMAX 3D. Lots of cool scenes, plenty of depth, and one of my favorite films in a long time. Just loved everything about it.

3D Trailers
GotG2 - This looked amazing, going to be as good or better than the first one in terms of 3D visuals.

Ghost in the Shell - First time I've seen a 3D trailer for this one, and kind of lukewarm. The film looks so slick and the visuals in all of the other trailers have looked so good i was expecting a lot from this one in 3D. Outside of a few scenes though, I wasn't too impressed. I hope the final film is better for 3D.

Spider-Man: Homecoming
- This was the weakest of the three previews for 3D. Just looked like one of the safe, flat-ish Marvel conversions.

BTW, Kong had a custom IMAX 3D intro, much like Suicide Squad.

Saw this in IMAX 3D and thought it looked great. I think it was a little too loud and in your face for my 7 year old. haha He about crapped his pants in some of the skull crawler scenes. He loved it though. And that Dunkirk sneak peak before it...WOW.

Nice 3D review, Levcore, thanks! I though the effects looked convincing, though you may have seen things I overlooked. What part of an effect took you out of the moment?

Yeah, this was an unexpectedly awesome action monster movie with really well done 3D. I gave the action a 10/10. After that great opening helicopter attack, I was totally onboard with this film.

Kong: Skull Island 3D gives pure action fans a lot to enjoy. Glad you also enjoyed it, Levcore.

I'll have to watch Jackson's Kong next time I get a chance. And Ape 3D again too.

Nice. Yes, some of the jump scares to the action were unexpected for this type of movie, so I can see it scaring someone. Glad you both enjoyed it. The teeth on the Skull Crawlers (a good name I'd say ), I don't know how Kong wasn't torn apart but he's tough. For more giant lizard versus human action, don't miss The Great Wall 3D.
