Oh, others can be the guinea pig for sure. But for a movie shot Super 35 that didn't get a DI (and likely wasn't shot super thick like Cameron does) I'm fully expecting this to look grainy as all get out. Not that I'm saying/intimating that that's a bad thing, as that's not why I'll be avoiding it.

I am thrilled that even the new blu-ray disc will include the Atmos track (I don't have a 4K system yet).

I've not really been here in the 4K section too much, but why are you avoiding it? Are you not really doing 4K until the standards for HDR etc get sorted out properly or just not a fan so far?

Be glad it didn't get a DI back then!! It would have been a horrible place to start from a re-mastering perspective.

At the very least Sony did a 4k scan (and hopefully) off the OCN's if they could get their hands on them.

Grain is good. Grain is a part of regular film stock.

Deadpool had the commentaries on its UHD Blu-ray if that counts for anything.

Been a long time since I have seen this and never really was a big fan. Will wait for reviews of the UHD BD but if it turns out to be good, I might give it another chance.

I'm hoping they do keep that cover for the UHD.

[edit] I expect Crouching Tiger to look grainy as **** in UHD. I'll be getting the regular Blu-ray, for reasons I've stated elsewhere.
I saw this projected in 35mm last year and it wasn't terribly heavy grain wise. I always thought that a theatrical print would be grainier than the OCN because of the duplication steps (despite very fine grained intermediate stocks), but from what you and others have told me it tends to look less grainy because of the softening from generational losses. It will be interesting to compare that to a 4K HDR scan of the OCN or IP or whatever Sony uses.

I have seen IPs of 15/70 footage such as TDK, Interstellar, etc, but that damn thing is so huge that I couldn't see grain even if I tried.

Yes, the grain takes on slightly softer characteristics with each dupe, as the highest frequency information is usually the first thing to go when analogue copies (of pretty much anything) are made and seeing as that's where the grain resides in film, it starts to get rolled off.

Duping stocks can also make it look somewhat blotchier too, check this comparison of Porky's where we've got Arrow's Blu-ray off an IP and Fox's own new transfer which to me looks like the negative: http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a...=41253&i=6&l=0 The first-generation source is clearly much more fine-grained while the softer IP has more of that typical yellow/blue blotchiness in the grain. (that could also be due partly to the differing transfer methods, mind)

I'd never expect to see grain on proper 15/70 footage though, certain shots in Interstellar and BvS are the sharpest, cleanest cinematic images I've ever seen in my life. But on the 35mm DMR blow-ups the grain was still the size of boulders on BvS. Not pretty at all.

Other transfers from IP don't look nearly as scatty as that one does, mind you, so a lot can also be said for the quality of the IP and/or print itself.

I just think that, with the Super 35 acquisition combined with the unforgiving nature of HDR, Crouching Tiger will prove to be very grainy on UHD disc. If I'm wrong then I will eat the proverbial item of headwear (wouldn't be the first time ).

[Show spoiler]

I think I'll go with the wire-less version. Don't need the book.
