So if the Blu-ray rights are basically with Paramount via Rysher, then Criterion would be able to release it.
According to Wikipedia

Rysher Entertainment is the owner of television and film programming content, primarily distributed around the world by CBS Television Distribution and Paramount Pictures. Select rights are also distributed by Warner Bros., Universal, Lionsgate, Fox, Columbia Pictures, MGM and other entertainment distribution companies worldwide.

I don't know how the rights to the Rysher properties are split up, or if Paramount for sure has the rights to Hard Eight. If Paramount owns it, I wouldn't be surprised to see Olive Films release it on Blu-Ray. I'd love for Criterion to release it, though.

Great news about the Blu-ray edition, but... I'm not a fan of the expensive Criterion Collection. I understand they are hi quality products, but I could live with a $15 Blu-ray release for this movie.

Wait till the B&N sale then and you'll get close to that price.

I haven't seen this since it was originally released on DVD and liked it. I cannot say how I will like it now, but I'll pick it up when it's on sale at B&N in November - and just sell it if I don't like it for some reason.

I got burned at this last sale. I didn't go until the last day and the cashier told me I couldn't use coupons in conjunction with sale items, even though I've done this at the same store in the past.

B&N stopped allowing coupons for criterions like a week or two into the sale, it wasn't just your store; online included

I like PT Anderson movies... but have not seen this one. However, I hate Adam Sandler. Will I enjoy this movie enough to overlook the fact that he is in it? I know it's not a typical Adam Sandler movie. But whenever I hear or see him, my skin begins to crawl.

Any ideas? Should I rent it first?

I think you will like it. What convinced me while I was watching the film, was that I completely empathized with his character. I guess that's due to good acting and directing skills.

I will buy it, and give it another try. I remember liking it before and
[Show spoiler]the parts in Hawaii are excellent. There is some very beautiful lighting going on there, especially during the phonebooth scene. I wish the movie spent more time there because the parts outside of Hawaii look so ugly and boring (I guess that is the point?).

I hate Adam Sandler, but I love this movie. I never enjoyed any of his comedies, but Sandler gives a great performance here. I can't guarantee you'll love the movie, but hating Sandler wasn't a deal-breaker for me.

Really??? I'm assuming this comment was a knock on the selection. If not, my apologies. Have you seen Punch Drunk Love? Not to say that everyone needs to think as highly of the film as I do but to purely dismiss a film because of Adam Sandler is crazy. This is a film that received overwhelmingly positive critical reviews and great reviews from moviegoers as well. It is definitely the type of film that fits Criterion M.O. It's a lesser known work from one of the great filmmakers of our time. It didn't get the same recognition that There Will Be Blood, Magnolia and Boogie Nights gained from an award nomination standpoint but still was received well. This is why I believe that Hard Eight (Sydney) would be an excellent choice for The Criterion treatment in the near future.

Slightly disappointed that they aren't including the Anderson/Sandler short "Couch" on this release, since the only available versions are low-quality web uploads. For that matter, there's also an Anderson/Guzman short film that I believe was made during this production (but it might've been "Magnolia", I can't remember).

Lately, I've been a little disappointed with the Criterion supplements, it seems like they miss out on a few things that could make their releases truly definitive.
